King doesn't "suck". He's out of the league because he didn't play the politic game well. You are trying to tell me Chris Jones is a better punter than Marquette King?

And I'm not even stuck on Marquette. I'd prefer getting a unknown with a big leg. I know its one out there there's one out there every year.

What's my problem with a older punter? The same problem I have with older players. I'd prefer youth or younger. Who wouldn't?

And reading how Chiefs fans feel about him....there are is a lot of "Its about time...." type comments.

Not that it's the be all and end all, but in roughly the same amount of punts (459 for Jones, 446 for King), Jones had nearly 400 fewer return yards allowed, had more punts fair caught (142 to 95), more punts downed inside the 20 (182 to 163), fewer touchbacks (King 34, Jones 23) and fewer touchdowns allowed on returns (King 3, Jones 0).

They are different types of punters - Jones is a directional punter more concerned with placement than distance on his kicks. King is a boomer who has had a tendency to outkick his coverage.

None of this is to mean that I think Chris Jones shouldn't have competition this camp. He absolutely needs to earn his job and not have it given to him. It's just that Marquette King isn't really a better punter when you take a close look.

No idea how his health is now or what the team is thinking, but lots of people around the team (like Brad Sham) were saying Jones was injured the last half of the year. They might think he'll be back to normal if healthy.

My issue with Jones is his lack of leg. I hear he was hurt last year but he's never been a big leg kicker but he's been much better than he was last year. King has a much bigger leg. Always has.

But like I said.....I'm not really clamoring for King just would prefer someone younger than Colquitt. They can bring in anyone for all I Care just as long as they offer up more than what Jones did last year.

A big leg doesn't matter if you outkick your coverage, or kick the ball right down the middle of the field and screw your coverage units.

Jones took a major step back last year. Injury or not, he wasn't good. He's under contract, so there's no risk to letting him compete for his job. But, he needs to compete, not be gifted the position. Unless Marquette King has learned the need to set his coverage teams up, and not just try to be the John Daly of punters, I don't view him as a great option.

"The man"? Oh I get it. No. "The man" isn't holding him down. What a stupid thing to say.......

There was a article on here discussing why he's out of the league......I would post it but I'll let you read it yourself:

What happened to NFL punter Marquette King? - The Hit Job ...medium.com › the-hit-job › what-happened-to-nfl-punter-marquette-kin...

I honestly would not put anything past Goodell if he did not want a certain player in the league. However, that story just does not really go anywhere other than it seems he got a bit disgruntled and maybe he burned some bridges that way.

The Chiefs released him to save salary cap space. They don’t need a high priced P when they punt twice per game. He’s still a great P and he doesn’t want to retire.
How often do they punt 2X a game LOL. Not many. His leg should be like a 20 year old’s.

There were multiple reports during last season that Chris Jones was playing through some sort of injury.

Chiefs signed 2 punters and let him go.....Cowboys need to do the same and find a punter out there and not some 15 year veteran. Marquette King is out there. It shouldn't be this hard to find some comp for Chris Jones.

What's going on with King? The guy is an awesome punter and still unsigned? Is he over-pricing himself or is it an attitude issue?...

It's nonsensical.

The team should always be looking for young specialists (K, P, LS) to bring to training camp.

Chris Jones might rebound from last season, the bar is very low at this point, but finding a younger leg would be better. L.P Ladouceur is great, but he's only going to play one or two more years.

One poster told me in here he’s just not good. He was in the XFL....still showed he had a leg there. I can’t call it but I know he at least should be brought in for comp. if not him then anyone.

Admittedly, I haven't followed him much but the few games I saw him he was pretty damn good.

We don't need a high priced punter either. Go get a fresh leg. Every player on this team doesn't have to be a Pro Bowler.

Right. And he should be cheap and he still has a bit youth in him.
While I agree on the general principle that you sometimes just need “average to good”, I think punter is one of the positions that is on the upswing of importance.

I want LP’s job
Best job in football
Snap a ball 8 times a game and no one can hit you while making big bucks
That’s my kind of job

I think we need some competition at punter
Jones may rebound but if I can get the same production for less money I’m all in
I don’t know if king is the guy but I’d have someone with a legit shot in camp
We will have someone but we need someone who is real competition

he was high priced for them on the existing contract. He won’t get that next go.

From Wiki (I know I know but still)...

2019 season
Jones suffered an important decline in productivity, averaging 41.6 gross yards and a 37-yard net average per attempt. Both stats were the NFL’s lowest. At the end of the season, it was reported in the media that he played through a back and sports hernia injury.

And th lere ya have it. If Fassel is good with Jones, I guess we all just need to get used to the idea that Jones will be our starter barring a terrible training camp
