If you could bring back one past player from the Cowboys, who would it be?

Aikman. He would do more for this team than any other player.

Maybe Woodson.

But Aikman would have the most pronounced affect. Especially behind this line.

Aikman was great but he never even came close to putting up the yards, TDs and passer rating Dak did last season. When the Cowboys started to decline later in the 90s and the defense got worse Aikman had his struggles. He even got booted at home. I’ve said repeatedly and I’ll say it again QB wasn’t our problem last season. All the great QB play in the world isn’t going to get us over the hump with a defense that doesn’t come up with enough sacks and turnovers. A few more opportunities with the ball and a few more short fields from turnovers last season probably would’ve made the difference. We lost some close games and struggling to make some critical stops didn’t help.

Deion Sanders and Demarcus Ware in their primes could play today. They wouldn’t have to change anything about themselves or their style to play great in today’s game. No question Aikman could play today in his prime but more would’ve been put on his plate than in the early 90s and he would have taken a lot of hits. Carrying the team would have put him on his back and left him concussed. The Cowboys would be a lot better off now if they had one of the great defensive players from their past. This is just one of those fantasy, offseason topics so not looking to get into a big debate over anyone’s choice. This is all in fun.

If I’m going to pick a player from the Cowboys past to play today, I’m going pick one that doesn’t have to put on 30 plus pounds or change their style of play to fit today’s game. I’m going to pick one that’s not too far removed from today’s game. Some are choosing players from decades ago that are going to have to completely change their body to play today. The game was a lot different back in the 70s. I’ve seen interviews with a number of great players from back then who said they could have never played in today’s game. A lot of fans live in the past and think you can just plug in a player from 40 years ago and they’ll be the same player despite how much bigger, faster and stronger players are today. A lot of the old-time players would have to make a lot of adjustments to themselves and their style of play to play in their primes today. Good luck with Everson Walls trying to play corner today with a 4.7 40 against big, fast WRs.

Aikman is less accurate than Dak. And he won't have a Norv Turner offense to lean on.

Myself I say a prime Deion. The man was unreal.

PJ I have been posting with you on this board for years and have appreciated your opinions. However your assertion Aikman was not as accurate than Dak is puzzling. There was a reason Aikman was the first over-all pick, and why Dak went in the fourth round.

Michael Irvin.

His passion and competitiveness have been missing from the team since he retired.

I followed Aikman's entire career. Look at his TD/INT ratio. I am just stating Dak get's alot of flak for missing a throw, yet Aikman never could do no wrong by fans here. If Dak had a 61.5% completion rate thus far for his career, would you be cool with that? As for being a 1st overall pick, Brady lasted to the 6th round. Romo & Kurt Warner went undrafted.

Aikman was very efficient and works well with A running game. He doesn't need to get into a rhythm throwing. Staubach was a big play QB. I just like a QB that is more of a big tall pocket passer.
Roger always worked extremely well w/ a running game.

Aside from height, Roger was better in every facet. Nothing against Aikman, Roger was just that good.

Except for Roger. Roger was the better QB.

Roger Staubach, and it's not close. He could and would feast in today's NFL. I think he'd be better now with the rules we have than he was then.

If defense.....Lilly. Its hard, I'd also consider the Manster and Harvey Martin. But I think Lilly is a player that transcends era.

Holy Larry, you've got to be on drugs. Aikman is one of the most accurate QBs of all time. Do you really not understand the differences in ratings and percentages between schemes and between the NFL now and then? Seriously, do some research, because that's one of the most foolish things I've ever seen on this board, and that says a lot. C'moooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon..

Give me Larry Allen, Charles Haley, Darren Woodson, Demarcus Ware, or Michael Irvin.

I want nothing but alpha males. I know a lot of folks around the league are thinking Super Bowl after this draft but it's going to take a few years to cleanse this franchise of the Garrett stench. I hope I'm wrong.

This is a fun exercise and thought it might make a cool debate.

If you could bring back one past player from the Cowboys and inject him into this year's team in his prime for this season only, who would it be?

As I mulled over the question, a lot of guys came to mind. I thought about the QBs of the past and while I would love to see Aikman's surgical accuracy with this team, I don't think we gain that much improvement.

I would love to see Michael Irvin back, but WR is already a strenght.

There are a lot of great linemen in Cowboys' past, but our line is already good.

So for me it came down to four possibilities:

Charles Haley
Demarcus Ware
Darren Woodson
Deion Sanders

And I decided on Sanders. I know we added a lot to the QB room, but I think Sanders locking down one side of the field would be lot of fun to watch.
I have to say Leon Lett.

Him fumbling at the GL against Buffalo in the SB was classic.

Then the blocked FG on Thanksgiving Day where he can't control the ball and loses possession for us..

was 2 of the weirdest plays in Cowboy history.

Liked to watch him play, happy he still coaches for us.

But probably not most choice.

I'm different for sure.
