Makes sense if Cowboys going to hybrid 4-3/3-4 scheme.
Jaylon is much better as pass rushing OLB.
Yeah reports of this have been coming out the past few days. There was a play in week 16 vs Philly in which Jaylon called the wrong zone coverage and him and Malcolm Smith were mixed up on what ended up being a big play. Smith also plays best going downhill and using his strength and straightline speed to make plays.
A mixture of Jaylon’s leadership/communication and physical strengths make the move to OLB a reasonable one. Also LVE is made to be a MLB in my opinion, might be more about his strengths than Jaylons.
Marinelli's base defense was 4-2-5.
The difference in MLB vs WLB in Marinelli's defense was not really significant.
The specific play and run right vs run left often determined the assignments as much or more than MLB vs WLB.
- They liked LVE at OLB for coverage because he's is better in coverage than Jaylon.
Against the outside zone run (with cutback option) which was the Cowboys top problem, it really only mattered if which LB was play-side a which LB was backside.
Mike Nolan
In the Mike Nolan defense, the OLBs often line up on the line like 3-4 OLBs.
- The big LBs on the field tend to be the OLBs.
Even in Nickel with just 2 LBs, one will often line up on the ball outside the DE.
- In the Marinelli defense, the SLB would occasionally line up on the ball outside the DE but it was not a significant part of that scheme.
Side Note:
- I'm convinced that Jaylon was over 250 in 2019 and I would not be shocked if he was 260.
