Why do people always assume the worse? Lamb did say he wanted 10 but then again he wasn’t gona come out and say I want 88. I feel he wasn’t gona go that way specially with all the dez rumors lately. He probably talked to Jerry and Jerry offered it. Lamb happily took it.
Yeah, either Lamb didn’t know about the 88 legacy and when told about it was probably fine with the honor of wearing it.

Or

He knew about the 88 legacy and didn’t want to be presumptive and ask for the number, which would have made him look like a conceited *** hole. People would have been on him for making that assumption.

I see no big deal. He was offered to wear a special number in Dallas and said yes. That’s it.

Technically we could, but so far they have not used 12, 74, 8 or 22 since Staubach, Lilly, Aikman and Emmitt. That has pretty clearly been a conscious choice, but apparently they didn't see 88 the same way.

Huh. Yeah I kinda feel the same. 88

Too soon for what? Dez is history here. They gave the number to Antonio Bryant. CeeDee has way more expectations than Antonio Bryant did. If he is good as we all think, he will definitely be worthy of the number. Far more than Antonio Bryant and probably Dez. Dez didn't win us any championships either....

Randy Moss never won a championship either.
Dez is the all time leading WR in Dallas. Dez loves the star like none other. Dez loves Jerry like none other. I dont have a problem with the 88 thing other than Jerry just said he was considering bringing him back. What I dont understand is the disdain fans have for Dez.

Seems like they try to avoid 8, 22, 33 (sort of), and 74.

Other teams do in fact retire numbers though.
And 12.

There is a limit to how many numbers a team can retire because there are too many players on a football roster, and there are restrictions on what numbers players at a certain position can wear, so retiring numbers could become a problem. The Cowboys chose a long time ago to circumvent any concern over that by creating the Ring of Honor in lieu of retiring numbers. There are other teams that have done something similar.

Classy move by Dez. You know he was in a no win situation here. He has to congratulate Lamb. But I know Dez is also disappointed.

One thing about Dez. He is a good guy. He is also a huge Cowboy fan. I do admire that part about Dez. Cowboy for life in that regard.
he gives a damn.
it matters to him.
always appreciated that about him.

Hey Omer, I can’t help you if you’re so limited in capacity that you can’t separate what I said (“jersey numbers are personal”) from what you’re claiming (“jersey numbers don’t affect play on the field”).

You’re trying to conflate the two in an effort to make a cheap point.
lol - you quoted me, so are you telling me your comment about jersey's being personal was just random and not meant as a response to what you quoted?

Sucks forcing Lamb to wear the old man number. Its like making him drive your station wagon when he gets his license instead of buying him a new car.
Since Irvin wore that number I would think it's more like getting the keys to the old man's Ferrari. lol

My response to your originally quoted post was in response to the strawman you were propping up (“did your jersey number affect your play on the field [...]”).

Nobody on this thread (that I’ve seen) has made the claim that CeeDee not getting his preferred number will affect his play on the field. The overriding theme from those commenting, including myself, is that Jerry is just meddling unnecessarily and should let a player create his own legacy.

My contention remains the same. If CeeDee wants #10 let him have it because numbers are personal. To be assigned a number you don’t want because the owner wants you to honor his dead friend that you have no relationship with is onerous and dumb.

lol - that's a dodge. It's easy to type the word strawman, but it's just a cop out if you can't answer the question.

Quit hiding behind a word and explain that if people are saying that this could affect Lamb's play, how is it wrong to point out the players don't think of those kinds of things when they play? Can you answer that? Do you really feel this is going to affect Lamb's play?

No, it's actually not re: Dez (or at least not for myself).

Personally, I don't even think that Dez should have gotten it and that 88 should have ended with Irvin.

The number is nothing more than a retread at this point and just gets cheapened with every shiny new 88 that gets printed with a new name on the back of it.

This team was fortunate enough to have him fall into our lap, Lamb made it clear on what number he was wanting to wear, and then Jerry has to guilt him into honoring a dead friend of his (who just so happened to be this year) to wear 88 because they share the same last name? That's creepy even for Jerry.

Oh well, I guess at the end of the day it saves myself from buying a Lamb jersey so I guess that's the one positive here.

Too me I don't care what number he wears and clearly not enough to make such a big deal over. I'm interested in how he performs and how he can help this team. People getting upset over it just seems stupid, then again some people like being upset even over the most minor of things.

What question you idiot?

I’ve literally said I don’t think jersey numbers affect players play on the field like 3-4 times now. That includes CeeDee.

You keep claiming that you heehawing donkey.

Let me guess....are you going to ask me the same question again?
You know what a question is - a sentence followed by a question mark? Someone taught you that, right?

You like words like "strawman" and "idiot" and now "heehawing", but you never seem to write anything of substance. You use insults instead of content - empty words instead of logical thought. I have asked appropriate questions in response to comments some have made in this thread, and you apparently have no idea why you disagree. You just mindlessly throw out petty insults, like a child on a school yard.

It's not about Jerry The Marketer wanting to market the player for more jersey sales. Tons of people who normally would buy a jersey of a 1st round WR pick like this will hold off because they have a fairly recent 88 jersey in their closet and they cant justify the expense of buying a new one just for a different name on the back just yet.

Honestly, Jerry isn't as obsessed with jersey sales as people want to pretend. If he was, he'd change/redesign our uniform and jerseys way more often. Give him credit for this, he's resisted the easy money he'd make just by drastically changing our jerseys.

So if it's not about Jerry marketing the kid for jersey sales, what's he marketing? It's about Jerry marketing the job he's doing as a GM. Handing out 88 to a new receiver and having that guy blow up is all about him wanting people to give him credit for finding the next great 88 and building the core of a new dynasty. (Sometimes I think he forgets how much of the '90s dynasty's success was owed to our defensive ferocity. He just remembers the hype of the triplets, so he thinks stocking the cupboard at QB-RB-WR means he's built a new Super Bowl team and he's done his job.)

and what does it matter? You guys are turning some minor deal into some big issue. Who cares what number? I want wins and SB and if Lamb helps achieve that then who gives a damn about some silly number? Jerry wants him to wear 88 and? so what
