He and Emmitt are my namesakes. Absolutely loved Roy. I hate that most people think of him as “bad” or overrated now. He was a beast for 5-6 years. 5 Pro Bowls, 2 All Pros, came in 2nd in DPOY one year.

There used to be a “Boom” video on YouTube that someone on this message board made. It was amazing. Wish it was still available.

Was also the epic hit on Amani Toomer after Toomer talked trash set to the tune of “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” that I used to watch once every couple weeks.

but he used to just knock the religion outta people. Please post your favorite RW blowup hits and plays.

Yeah, until he stopped bothering learning the plays and missing OTAs because his family had planned a cruise.

Fat. Not committed. Ineffective.

roy was a rock , wasted talent with the previous coaches .

Bill Parcells and Wade Phillips are two of the most respected defensive minds of the generation.

But, yeah, its the coaches

More like the league evolved by making significant rule changes because of his style of play, and this effectively neutered him. He was forced to completely adapt his style to a league that was growing softer and this caused his weaknesses to shine. He was my favorite player before he fell off, and if Roy had come up in the eighties; I think his legacy would be much different.

There was one rule change.

Not being able to drag a guy from behind doesn't suddenly make you suck in coverage.

Roy was great under Parcells. He went to four Pro Bowls under him. If I can remember right when Wade came in, Roy started getting weird and didn’t think he fit into the 3-4 scheme.

Man among boys. True fearless playmaker. The enforcer who made our defense nasty. Wish we had someone feared like that at safety again. Would like someone like that at LB too. Dlaw is doing it okay on the Dline. 3 tough leaders at each level would make the D awesome.

Right player, wrong time. As others have said, his story would be much different if he were drafted in 1992 instead of 2002.

It seemed like he was a weekly regular on ESPN’s “Jacked Up” segment. The league simply legislated violence out of the game, which is the kiss of death when violence is your calling card.

It’s interesting to observe how much the game has changed in a relatively short period of time. There’s no doubt in my mind he would be a LB in today’s NFL, despite how effective he was in coverage early in his career. There wouldn’t even be any consideration to keeping him at S. He was bigger than many of the LBs being drafted last weekend.

I think he could have been a HOF simply by Darren Woodson not retiring. He took care of all the details & coverage and let Roy just roam centerfield (for hits) and the box.
Roy Williams was Laveranues Coles' daddy...
