Dallas should rescind the franchise tag and let Dak walk

I think Jerry is already getting comfortable with Dak's 31M hit on the cap. I doubt he will budge on the number of years offered, if that is actually the holdup or just something we are led to believe. This talk that Dak has the leverage doesn't make sense to me and never has. Dak will likely play on the tag in another prove yourself season IMO. Dak and his agent know he HAS to play this year or he'll risk losing more than money. There won't be a complete holdout like what Bell did, but I don't expect any agreement either until there has to be...in July.

I think most could stand going with Dak as long as he wasn't tying up a huge chunk of the salary cap for the next four or five years.
It's not that he is terrible, but he's just not a marquee quarterback who is worth $30 million plus per year.
He still hasn't shown that he deserves to be paid like one of the better quarterbacks in the league.
$15-$20 million per year is where his numbers should be at until he shows that he understands that he is supposed to make the team better and can actually do that when he is needed.
He seems to think he's earned more than any player in the NFL, and that shows how immature he really is.
Give him two years @ $40 million and let him prove himself.
Because up until now he's proven that he is no different than he was in college and he's lost when it comes time to be the marquee quarterback he thinks he is.
one year on the tag is great for letting dak prove himself under MM.

The Cowboys claim that the Andy Dalton signing has nothing to do with Dak Prescott, but it’s clear that Dalton gives the Cowboys some leverage in negotiations with Prescott.

Any team that signs Prescott to a franchise deal would need two things: (1) not to have a franchise QB already in place; and (2) at least $25M in 2020 cap space (depending on deal structure).

At this point in the offseason, very few teams even satisfy the first condition. Here is a rundown of the QB situation across the league:

  • Bills: Josh Allen
  • Dolphins: Tua Tagovailoa
  • Jets: Sam Darnold
  • Patriots: Jarrett Stidham
  • Ravens: Lamar Jackson
  • Bengals: Joe Burrow
  • Browns: Baker Mayfield
  • Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger
  • Texans: Deshaun Watson
  • Colts: Philip Rivers
  • Jaguars: Gardner Minshew
  • Titans: Ryan Tannehill
  • Broncos: Drew Lock
  • Chiefs: Pat Mahomes
  • Raiders: Derek Carr
  • Chargers: Justin Herbert
  • Giants: Daniel Jones
  • Eagles: Carson Wentz
  • Commanders: Dwayne Haskins
  • Bears: Mitch Trubisky
  • Lions: Matt Stafford
  • Packers; Aaron Rodgers/Jordan Love
  • Vikings: Kirk Cousins
  • Falcons: Matt Ryan
  • Panthers: Teddy Bridgewater
  • Saints: Drew Brees
  • Bucs: Tom Brady
  • Cardinals: Kyler Murray
  • Chargers: Jared Goff
  • 49ers: Jimmy Garoppolo
  • Seahawks: Russell Wilson
A very generous list of possible landing spots contains the Patriots, Jaguars, Raiders, and Bears. That’s it.

Moving on to the second condition narrows the list even more. Here’s the cap space for each possible suitor:
  • Patriots: $2M
  • Jaguars: $21M
  • Raiders: $12M
  • Bears: $10M
The Patriots would be hard-pressed to create the necessary space. The Jaguars could make it happen. The Raiders could get to $25M by cutting Carr, but they’d be tight against the cap. The Bears would get no cap relief by cutting Trubisky and would need to create at least $15M elsewhere, which is unlikely.

Therefore, it appears that the only competition for Prescott’s services would come from the Jaguars and the Raiders. The Jaguars could offer more money, but Las Vegas would obviously be the preferable destination. In this ongoing game of chicken, Jerry Jones has to like those odds. He should call Prescott’s bluff.

I don't think we should rescind the tag, but I do think we should not have used the exclusive tag.

Not even the non exclusive. Transition tag would have set his value. But for whatever reason Jerry must have thought some team was going to swoop down and take him for 50 million a year.

I doubt it will happen, but signing Dalton just gave the front office a lot of leverage.

All that means is he goes and signs a 1 year deal elsewhere with the guarantee of no tag included in the deal and shatters the market next year. This theory that Dalton is somehow good as a starter is one I just do not understand. He is one of the top 35 QBs in football and at his best is top 25 but he is not even close to being the kind of QB who can get you to the SB.

Dalton does not lessen Dak's leverage. Dak's leverage is exactly the same today as 2 months ago, and possibly moreso because unless they want to grab Newton and HOPE he is what he used to be, there are no other options out there that make you anything more than a team fighting for the extra wild card spot.

can you resend the previous tag and change it to a Transition tag?

I don't think so. I think there is a deadline for the tag and that has past. I could be wrong, but I think if you rescind the tag now Dak automatically becomes a free agent.

Yes if you rescind the tag, Dak is effectively a free agent. I cannot remember if at this point it counts as him being cut or not, but he would be a free agent.
