1) Rush is unproven. We really don't know what he is capable of doing.
2) Dak may hold out. Dalton is an insurance policy against this.
3) Dak might be wanting too much money. I believe the QB market might be dropping. $35M is too many eggs in one basket. Goff, Wentz, and Wilson are vastly overpaid. Much cheaper QBs might be able to achieve 85% of what the top QBs can do. And it might be enough.
4) Dalton here sends a message to Dak that this train is moving with or without you. Dak has a golden opportunity. Very good pay, best QB job in the NFL, offensive weapons galore. Don't be looking a gift horse in the mouth. Imagine some other QB leading this offense while you are getting market value ($20-something million) with some other team.
4) The running QB is the future (several years out) and teams need more than one capable QB to cover for injury. So the amount of dollars allotted to the QB position has to be spread out.
5) Dalton could be turned into some good trade value assuming another team's QB gets hurt late in camp or early in the year. Assuming Rush or DiNucci or Thorson show they are capable of backing up.
6) The coronavirus effect: any player who tests positive in the season might have to be quarantined for two weeks or more until they test negative. Might need an extra capable QB on the roster this year.
7) Lastly, maybe Dalton is better. I don't think so but never know until we see them in action. Training camp will let you know since all variables are the same. Or maybe they are just as good. Or maybe Dak is only slightly better so rather pay Dalton $20M than Dak $35M.
8) There really is no downside to signing Dalton other than taking practice time from Rush and Thorson. DiNucci will probably see little practice time and even less game action since the Cowboys most likely will want to stash him on the PS for a year. Let him take a redshirt, better for his long term development.

For those against the Dalton signing, were you also ripping the Saints for signing Winston for even more money than the Cowboys signed Dalton?

Winston took a minimum salary because no one would pay him more. Dalton clearly didn't get any starting offers but the main reason he was cut was that his salary was going to be 18 Million next year.

I don't think this has any impact on Dak in any way, except that he will have one more veteran voice on the bench for preparation, game planning, etc.

The QB is not going to be dropping. In fact it may be more difficult to sign Dak if Watson extended before camp.
.
Also, we have seen plenty of Dalton. He is definitely not better lol

Unnecessary thread. Nothing about it doesn't make sense.

Yes, we have seen Dalton. We have seen Dak. We will now see in camp all things equal (same offensive players and same defensive players and same plays) and be able to make a valid comparison. My money is on Dak. The big question is how much better and how much more money. For example, do you pay a $15M premium for a 10% better QB (numbers and money are for example only and not an indication of what I think they will be)?

1) True
2) Agreed

3) Dak might be wanting too much money. I believe the QB market might be dropping. $35M is too many eggs in one basket. Goff, Wentz, and Wilson are vastly overpaid. Much cheaper QBs might be able to achieve 85% of what the top QBs can do. And it might be enough.
Market might be dropping - Unless the NFL can ratify the CBA, I don't see the salary cap decreasing. Without that, the market will not drop. It may stagnate, but it would take quite a bit for it to drop

QBs are paid to much - But without a QB, a team will not be successful. Outside of maybe the NBA, no single position / player can impact a team quite like a QB in the NFL.

85% QBs - If you build a great team around them, and luck breaks your way, that "might be enough". But that is much harder to achive then speeding "too much" on a really good / borderline great QB.

How is signing a 32 year old QB who's best has obviously passed him by, a message to a Franchise QB?

And $20 something million a year for Dak? Please don't be naive. Bridgewater signed for $21m/yr (3yr/$63m) and Tannehill signed for $29.5m/yr (4yr/$118m). Dak is easily better than both of those QBs.

4) The running QB is the future (several years out) and teams need more than one capable QB to cover for injury. So the amount of dollars allotted to the QB position has to be spread out.
I can't tell you how many times I've heard "running QBs are the future" in the NFL. But IMO, they never will be.
Mobile QB? Sure. You can't be a statue back there and will need to improvise from time to time.
But running QB? It is just not sustainable with how big and fast defenses are in the NFL.

5) Dalton could be turned into some good trade value assuming another team's QB gets hurt late in camp or early in the year. Assuming Rush or DiNucci or Thorson show they are capable of backing up.
It would have to be a VERY specific situation for Dalton to become trade value. For most teams, they would rather see what their young guys could do before trading for a 32 year old QB that will probably be out of the league in < 3 years.

6) The coronavirus effect: any player who tests positive in the season might have to be quarantined for two weeks or more until they test negative. Might need an extra capable QB on the roster this year.
I'm 99% sure as soon as a single player test positive for COVID-19, the season is done for. With as close as athletes are around each other, along with coaches, trainers, equipment staff ect... I can't see how any league could justify continuing play if any player tests positive.

7) Lastly, maybe Dalton is better. I don't think so but never know until we see them in action. Training camp will let you know since all variables are the same. Or maybe they are just as good. Or maybe Dak is only slightly better so rather pay Dalton $20M than Dak $35M.
IMO, Dak is significantly better, especially in 2020. To say otherwise is just silly. Dalton can have success in Dallas, but that does not mean he is as good as Dak.

But lets say both Dak and Dalton are about equal in 2020. What about 2021? 2022? 2023?

If Dallas lets Dak walk, you better hope they hit big on a QB in the draft and not draft a Rosen, Trubusky, Lynch, Mariota, Winston, Bortles, Manzel, Bridgewater .... ect.

As Parcells said, you can't just dial 1-800-QUARTERBACK to get a good NFL QB.

8) There really is no downside to signing Dalton other than taking practice time from Rush and Thorson. DiNucci will probably see little practice time and even less game action since the Cowboys most likely will want to stash him on the PS for a year. Let him take a redshirt, better for his long term development.
Agreed. Although I don't think Dallas will risk DiNucci to the practice squad. After all, it was reported, that Dallas drafted him since they were unsure if they could sign him as a UDFA. If they like him that much, and with the rosters being expanded to 55, unless he really bombs in practice / preseason, they would likely keep him on the main roster.

For those against the Dalton signing, were you also ripping the Saints for signing Winston for even more money than the Cowboys signed Dalton?
I could not care less what the Saints do, but didn't Winston signed for ~$6 million LESS than Dalton. ($7 million vs $1.1 million for 1 year)

Hell, Dalton has 3x more guaranteed than Winston's total contract. So not a good argument to use to make your case for the Dalton signing.

I like the signing of Dalton for what it is. A veteran QB that can backup our starting QB if/when the starter is not available. To believe Dalton is any more than that is silly IMO.

yup, every thing u say is true.

the best (yeah dalton is a better backup than jameis! winston is probably a better starter though bc he does have big upside!) backup qb in the nfl for $3m guaranteed?? just a fantastic signing and good for dalton too since he gets to test free agency next year when so many quarterbacks wont be available and he does not have to move his family during this crazy time!

Why are people acting like Dalton was devoid of talent him lol. He had AJ Green and Tyler Eifert in his prime.

Dalton has always been a lower tier starter his whole career. Just slightly above average at his best. To think that is going that is going to change here is foolish.

Signing a player like Dalton is all about signing a guy that gives you a good chance at winning 1 or 2 critical games if Dak gets hurt. If anything thing more was expected of him, you would see him get alot more than 3 million

The signing gives the Cowboys some leverage and insurance that they’ll have a viable QB that can start the season in the event Dak holds out for a few games or the entire season.

The Cowboys are preparing themselves in the event they can’t reach an agreement with Dak by July 15 and he doesn’t want to play under the franchise tag. There’s been several whispers that he’s not going to participate in the virtual offseason and is going to hold out. The situation could become so contentious that the Cowboys are forced to move on. I would be shocked if it came to that but this situation is starting to resemble the situation between the Commanders and Kirk Cousins. I believe the Cowboys are sold on Dak but not for the kind of money he’s looking for.

Since the defense is at least a year behind the offense, it buys the team another year from being extorted by Dakota for 40 million dollars while bringing in a serviceable Qb for a fraction of that cost

This team is finally doing things right. Even if Dakota signs the tender, his greedy, mediocre azzz is gone the season after that.
