Now that our Boys have knocked the draft out the park and added some real talent to this team, I’m sure most of us are feeling a lil better than a few months ago..atleast I am.

We have to trust McCarthy has a plan at this point. I’m feeling better about the talent they’ve acquired at needed positions like CB, DT, WR, OL, back up QB, and even safety.

That said, the RDE position left vacant by Robert Quinn seems to have been pieced together with multiple long shot players, all with question marks. Hence the constant speculation to sign high priced FA’s like Clowney or Griffin. (Which I’m not against at the right price.. never can have too many, right?!)

Nonetheless, if any one of the current guys we have on the roster capitalize, then it has to be deemed a success. I personally believe 2-3 of them will shine and surprise even die hard fans. For what is worth, I’ve listed the guys and my opinion. Hopefully this brings optimism.. feel free to berate me.

LOCKS
Demarcus Lawrence- (6’3” 265lbs) obvious lock. Really don't have to mention him here, but I hope the added DTs will bring about production he had a couple years ago. There’s a lot of nothing being said about Lawrence(good or bad), hopefully he’ll live up to his contract now that he has help to relieve double teams. (fingers crossed) Hopefully we won’t see another “down year”.
Aldon Smith- (6’5” 270lbs) IF reinstated, obvious lock. Brian Broaddus stated recently he heard Smith had a better chance to be reinstated than Gregory. Take that for what it’s worth. I know folks have their apprehensions, but everything I’ve read is that he’s turned his life around. I have no worries about his play. He’s a freak of nature similar to David Irving. The time off is of minimal consequence.. if he’s active, he will produce. Will he dominate like years ago? prob not. But if he’s anywhere close, Cowboy fans will rejoice and RDE will be covered.
Bradlee Anae- (6’3” 265lbs) Dal isn’t going to give up on such a talent, so he’ll be giving more than enough opportunities. Supposedly had a higher draft grade and I for one, was surprised he was still there in the 5th Rd. I love his tenacity, attitude, and will to get after the QB. All eyes will be square on this late round pick to be our future RDE.
Tyrone Crawford- (6’4” 290) I’ve watch YouTube interviews w/Crawford and he states he’s healthy and ready to return. I truely hope so. Say what you want about the guy, he still has valuable position flex, a run stuffer, and capable DE. Yes, I’d prefer someone like Aldon Smith breakthrough, but Crawford has been a reliable DL and that resonates with all coaches.
Dorance Armstrong- (6’4” 260lbs) I’ll admit, I’ve been waiting for his breakout year. He’s a beast and has the tools to excel. He reminds me a lot of Lawrence, but needed a lil more refinement. I truly believe, this is Armstrong’s year to prove it and I have faith he will. He only played in 24% def snaps last year, yet still snagged 2 sacks. Going into his 3rd year, the position is his if he wants it. It’s time to prove it. (Active roster pet cat)

The Rest
Randy Gregory- (6’5” 255lbs) The only reason he’s in ‘The Rest’ category bc of the doubt of reinstatement. IF he returns, he’s easily a lock. Like Smith, he can roll out of bed and sack QBs. There’s not much more I could say ab his potential that most don’t already know. He’s stronger than his frame suggests, he bends like a true pass rusher, and is good against the run. He’s a prototypical RDE, but his past haunts him. It would be amazing to have him as an option.
Joe Jackson- (6’5” 275lbs)- I can only holdout hope he can show something after a year under his belt. At best, he reminds me of a Markus Golden type player. Someone that’s not technically sound, yet produces sacks and stops the run. He has natural strength that some have stated he’s “strong as hell”. He might be more of the Crawford mold w/position flex at DT, but it would be amazing to see him excel and become the nasty lunchpail “pain-in-the-***” player that opponents just don’t look forward to seeing.
Jalen Jelks- (6’5” 260lbs)- I’ll admit.. he’s a long shot, but the last regime seen enough from him to stash him on IR. Maybe that won’t mean much, but Jelks has the measurables, attitude, and motor to succeed. His scouting report noted he need to get stronger. He’s a true wild card. Maybe Jim Tomsula can work his magic and get the most out of this guy. This would be def a delighted surprise
Ron’Dell Carter- (6’3” 270lbs)-as a UDFA, he has a steep climb. Although this consensus All American showed enough that 24 teams offered him a contract. He was very productive in college. He chose Dallas and knows what he’s up against. His attitude and tenacity is what RDEs are made of. An obvious ‘pet cat’ candidate, I hope his play allows him to make the team and contribute. May the force be with him.
Ladarius Hamilton- (6’2” 260)- more of an OLB, he’s a project at DE. He has traits, but still super long shot to make the practice squad..much less the roster. I personally believe he’d be better suited at LB. Knowing the hybrid defense they plan to run.. who knows where he’ll end up. If he makes the team.. I’d be shocked. Then again, I’ve been wrong before.

To conclude: I think we’re in better shape than it may appear. If I’m wrong, we’ll be average at worst. Not to mention, there will be veterans available after salary dumps, cuts, etc.. I’m greedy like most here and would love to add a proven veteran now, but I don’t blame McCarthy for wanting to see what he has first. We may actually have what we need now.
Sorry so long, but I hope you enjoyed.

For one or two of these guys not to work out, a lot would have to go against our favor. I genuinely think both get reinstated. If so, then RDE will be even better than last year with Quin’s propensity to be a liablity in the run game.

We have a lot of options at end. Odds are at least a couple will work out. They might not turn into superstars, but surely a couple will end up being strong contributors.

Great writeup. Agree on Tyrone Crawford's skill set but the big key is how much of a pay cut he will take to return.

Great write-up!

Crawford should be cut. I'd prefer trading him to get a pick but no team would touch that contract. Would love to see Gregory take his roster spot.

Jelks and Hamilton both will get opportunity at OLB. Anxious to see how that works.

Really glad to see the Cowboys getting football players like Anae and Carter. Both examples of guys who didn't fit the mold of a perfect DE but just know how to produce. Neither would have been Cowboys under Garrett.

Good write up.

but I don’t think Crawford is close to being a lock.

I agree somewhat.. I only had him as a ‘lock’ due to his position flex. Of course this is all contingent if Crawford’s hip is healed and he’s at full go..

If Crawford gets pushed out at DE, he can slide into backup DT. Yeah, the salary question comes into play..but his competition is Hills, Woods, and a rookie.

Or we can cut bait and gain lil salary cap. Of course that means we’re rolling with questionable Back up DTs.

Personally, If Crawford wins the job. He has it imo. He’s a proven veteran that plays all positions across the DL. As a backup, Crawford would atleast play as an average DT. I’m good with that.

It may be in certain peoples best interest if Marino is placed on this list.

His first name is a bit of a problem, we understand, but dont worry about that.

I'd hate to see any unfortunate coincidental injury to anyone.

Our Dline was better before Quinn was here. The DE's we have now blow away the one dimensional Quinn.

I am not going to write the whole thing up again, but remember this is a new staff and a new scheme.
It's helpful to think of them as EDGE players as opposed to just DEs.
In this scheme, In just the base, we will have the SAM/DPR. the base LE, which is basically a 5T, and the base RE,, which will often be in a 2-point stance. Also, the WLB will blitz A LOT more, which is probably where Jaylon Smith is going.

Put me in the camp that says Crawford has to prove his 100% fit and able to play to his contract. That's not a given IMO.

I believe the word on Aldon was "287 and shredded!" At that size, he sounds like a more athletic tweener alternative to Crawford.

Crawford had already said he's willing to take a pay cut at the end of the season. I think they're waiting to see what he has, and what we have, then will make him an offer in August.

The only reason Crawford was a lock is because he had a high status in Jason Garretts Book and also with Monte Kiffin and Rod Marinelli.

He doesnt have a Position. That was highly loved by Rod with his Position Flex / Twitch Guys. I dont think Nolan, Tomsula and MM think the same way cause they drafted and acquired either true DT or true Pass Rushers.

Hes not even close to a Lock in this new regime. No one is safe.

First of he has to take a big pay cut otherwise hes gonna be cut.

Jury is out on Smith and Gregory but if they get reinstated than the D-Line will be insane and i feel Ron'Dell Carter will also make the Team.

Sorry so long, but I hope you enjoyed.

I think Tank is a lock for the roster because of his contract. If not for his dead money hit if they could wave a magic wand and lose his contract and his production, there is about a 25 percent chance they would move on from him. Yes. I said it. But he will be here because of his contract.

With Aldon Smith and Randy Gregory you have talent, but lots of unknowns. Let’s say both of them get reinstated AND can still play. Do you trust both to play out the year? If so, do you go long at DE? I think you would have to.

I think Anae makes the roster, but it’s not a lock. We have cut 5th rounders before. Hell we cut a 4th rounder when Parcells was here.

Tyrone Crawford? What to do? I personally think he makes it as a DT or he gets cut. Ironically, he may he kept as a DT if we keep BOTH Gregory and Aldon solely because of position flex.

I think Armstrong makes the team. He has followed about the same growth curve as Tank. Tank SHOULD have been drafted in the 4th round too.

I think Joe Jackson gets wiped out in a numbers game. If he shows anything the Cowboys will try to flip him for a late round pick or send him to the practice squad.

Jenks will probably go to the practice squad too, although I think he has some roster potential.

I think Carter makes the 53 man roster not because he can play yet, but because he won’t make it to the practice squad.

6 DEs will probably make the roster IF they can all play.

Excellent write up/response to the OP of which I totally agree with. Especially your Tank remarks. I fully agree.

My opinion on DL pass rush is kinda basic but possibly a wash as well. By that I mean IF, (2 HUGE IFs) Gregory and Smith resemble anything close to their previous younger form, I think the pass rush will be okay.

But then again it could just be that the pass rush productivity is similar to last year while trading out Quinn and Benett for this year's Gregory and Smith. So it could quite possibly be called a wash.
So maybe if you were totally disappointed in pass rush last year I believe it could be similar.

I would hope for noticeable run defense improvements based off this year's player acquisitions. Emphasis on Hope.

Just my .02.

I disagree that Aldon smith is a lock....why is he a lock? doesn't have a guaranteed contract. has been away from football for 3 years. its not like you put him in a freezer, thaw him out and bang he is as good as he used to be. three years is a lifetime in the NFL, career for some...I see him as a bobble guy.....I think Crawford is the swing guy and we can put him on the DT group, with Hill being on a very thin margin to make this team....with McCoy, Poe, Woods, Gallimore and Crawford, that's a 5 man rotational group.

DE is very worrisome, specially the RDE, which may end up rotational group of some kind and hopefully somebody steps up. I think key is for Gregory to be re-instated. he played decent after a year off the last time. he is the most talented of the bunch. I expect to see a lot of Anae in situational pass rush. Armstrong on early downs. joe Jackson to back up Lawrence.
