What is more important, Team or QB?

1. When it comes to winning it all what is more important? The QB or the team around the QB? The other parts of the team.

Lets either keep coaching out of it or assume we have a quality coach.

Team, and of course the QB is part of that team. For proof, all you have to do is look at Archie Manning's career. He was every bit the quality QB that his son, Payton, was, but he was stuck on crappy teams and could not do a thing. No QB has ever won a championship without a quality team around him.

True, but I think Tom Brady has been way more important to the Pats for the past 175 years than the team around him.

Teams win games. Unfortunately most sports commentators and “analysts” lack the ability to talk about a team and instead focus on individual contributions, never looking at the bigger picture of what it took to orchestrate those individual contributions.

Not really. He's a historically great player, but when the roster was poor he didn't win championships.

People thought he was washed up in 2013 because he lost most of his receiving weapons that year and had to throw to the likes of Kenbrell Thompkins and Josh Boyce. In 2014 they reload the roster and suddenly he's great again and wins his 1st title in 10 years.

And here is where the Patriots defense ranked in points allowed in the seasons he won titles: 6, 1, 2, 8, 1, 7. Tom Brady never won a title without a top 10 scoring defense.

This is also true of Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach. And probably a bunch of other Hall of Famers too.

^^^ This. Yes, it helps a lot to have a great QB instead just a really good one, but even the greats would not win a championship without a quality team behind him. Joe Montana would have been Joe Schmoe if he had played on a crappy team. He had a great coach whose system was perfect for his abilities, and they had a great defense with the likes of Ronnie Lott. I'm sure Montana himself would tell you he did not win those championships single handed.

The TEAM around the QB no doubt.

Jim Plunkett, Jim McMahon, Doug Williams, Jeff Hostetler, Mark Rypien, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco are all examples of average QB's winning SB's on great teams.

True!

A minimum level of QB play is a prerequisite though.

Some QB's will never win the big one, no matter how good the surrounding talent is.

That's also true. You don't win a championship with a scrub QB. Even Trent Dilfer was highly competent.

Both. I do agree all QB depend on others around them no one QB has ever done it alone. Flip side all QB take the heat more so than any player on the team for failure. I would also nothing gets you beat faster than poor QB play

Team is more important, but the QB position is more important today than 20 years ago because of how the game has changed. It’s much more of a passing league now. You haven’t seen any Johnsons or Difers win the Super Bowl in the past 15 years.

True. That's why if you have a competent, but not great, QB, you win with mostly defense. With a smothering defense, you can play it close to the vest with safe plays on offense and then as long as you score a decent amount, you can win. It's how the Ravens won it all with Dilfer.
