What is more important, Team or QB?

The bottom line is you don’t HAVE to have a HOF caliber QB to win the Super Bowl, but it sure as hell enhances your chances. The evidence proves it without a shadow of a doubt.

The team is the most important. That is exactly why you don't pay someone like DP a huge contract. He doesn't make the players around him better, they make him better. So you have to put your resources in the team around him for someone like DP to function. When you look at someone like Brady, he could function as a top tier QB regardless of who was around him. That's why he is elite (or was). Dak is not elite so you can't pay him like he is. You could change DP out with 15 other QB in the NFL and we would get the same results, if not better.

Teams win games. Unfortunately most sports commentators and “analysts” lack the ability to talk about a team and instead focus on individual contributions, never looking at the bigger picture of what it took to orchestrate those individual contributions.
^ Truth. No one should argue against this. :starspin:

If you have a great QB they can make the team around them better we’ve seen it through the years. There’s been teams completely turn their seasons around by changing QBs. A head coaches success depends on their QB. Naturally a QB needs some talent around them but a great QB can make the talent around them better. Players step up when they believe in their QB. It’s very difficult for a team especially in a passing league to overcome average to bad QB play.

QBs can’t just turn and hand the ball off and depend on their defense like they did decades ago. They have to be able to shoulder the load in some games. The price for QBs is going up every year because they have such an influence in how a team performs. The Chiefs did what they haven’t done in 50 years once they inserted Mahomes. No way would they have won the Super Bowl or even reached the Super Bowl with a lesser QB.

The TEAM around the QB no doubt.

Jim Plunkett, Jim McMahon, Doug Williams, Jeff Hostetler, Mark Rypien, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco are all examples of average QB's winning SB's on great teams.

Half of those guys I wouldnt even call average.

so what you're saying is pay Dak, right?
Yes, within reason. Dak has shown he can be very good. He’s a little inconsistent, but he’s also still young. I think we can win a Super Bowl with him. He’s as good as, if not better than, Wentz. Dak is much more than a bus driver. Elite? No. Can he be? Maybe. Very good? Yes.

I agree. He's getting better too. I was just looking at his first 4 compared to Brady:

Both. I do agree all QB depend on others around them no one QB has ever done it alone. Flip side all QB take the heat more so than any player on the team for failure. I would also nothing gets you beat faster than poor QB play

Yep. You aren’t going to win a Super Bowl if your QB is throwing the ball to the other team.

True, but I think Tom Brady has been way more important to the Pats for the past 175 years than the team around him.

I know the OP said leave coaching out of it. But in this case you can't. Brady has been to 9 Super Bowls, that borders on the supernatural. I think if you put any elite QB past or present under that coach and system you'd get similar results.

I guess we'll find out.

1. When it comes to winning it all what is more important? The QB or the team around the QB? The other parts of the team.

Lets either keep coaching out of it or assume we have a quality coach.
Team without a doubt. And if anybody doesn’t understand that. They’re not worth the effort

I think a good QB can win you games in the NFL against bad and mediocre teams, and do it consistently. That's why the top QBs tend to end up in the playoffs or at least in the hunt each season.

Winning superbowls and making deep playoff runs is a total team effort. Very rarely can a single player carry poor teams that far.
