The 49ers were a huge nothing until Joe Montana's 1981-1990 run. You can't really argue that they're iconic but the Patriots aren't at this point.

Yeah, the 49ers aren't even close to the Bears or Giants in iconic franchises.

My list:
Cowboys.
Steelers.
Fourth Niners.
Bears.

All four of these teams have storied history.
In fact, when a reporter asked Bill Parcells why he wanted to coach the cowboys, that was the answer he gave, a "storied" history.

When I think of the NFL, these franchises come first into mind.

Until recent history, the Patriots were nothing. If they can maintain their winning streak for another 10 years, maybe they'll make my list....lol
You’re forgetting the most storied franchise in NFL history from Title Town USA who holds most NFL championships along with most storied stadium.

Where have the Cowboys been for the last 20+years? That logic goes both ways.
Fair question.
Cowboys is one of few teams that stays in the news cycle, even when they're down.

Yes. That was pointed out at the beginning.
And I agreed.

Furthermore.
Because you can label the pats in the one trick pony camp, until they do it again with new co stars.
You can't' label the cowboys ........

So over to the New England ponies to do it again , new era, new QB , new head coach, then I will rate them as iconic.

I think you have to start with the Packers and I’d give the Bears probably close to equal billing as two most Iconic franchises in NFL history.

Then probably New York football Giants assuming we’re are going to include the full history of the league. The Eagles , Steelers , Browns and even the Colts also part of the early Iconic history.

The 49ers and Cowboys came much later. SF in the 50’s and our Boys of course in the 60’s which was first team in the South. And more a part of the modernization of the league .

The Cowboys are an Iconic brand now but I don’t really associate them with the rich history of the league going back a 100 years.

Exactly. I am glad that you understand.

I bet the Patriots wish that they were as "iconic" as our Cowboys have been for the past 20+ years.

The Pats single run pretty much spans the duration of both Cowboys runs. The only thing making people think the Pats aren't iconic is because it's newer - but every year that 20 year run falls into the past will make it's significance grow exponentially. 15 years from now, they will top everyone's list.
For me, the difference was when they won and when they were culturally relevant

1985 Patrtiots - Destroyed by the Bears. Does anyone even remember the Eason led teams? Raymond Berry was the coach

1998 Patriots - Beat by the Packers. This was Parcells. Does anyone really remember these teams for any reason other than Parcells coaches there between NY and Dallas? Drew Bledsoe threw a ton of interceptions

If you really want to argue for the Patriots you can stretch your position by trying to include these two also ran teams but they were simply “the other team” in other seasons and in both super bowls

The discussion wasnt which franchise had the beat dynasty or even which franchises have had the most success on the fields.

The discussion was about *Iconic* franchises.

that’s the point

let Belichick do it again without Brady and we can talk.

Better yet, let them become culturally relevant. Lots of people don’t even really recognize the Patriots as being a Boston team, and those who do, have the Pats as they third most iconic franchise in their own city, behind the Celtics and Red Sox.

I will never argue against Brady and Belichick. They are both, in my opinion, the greatest of all time in their respective roles.

The Patriots franchise? Meh, their franchise really amounts to little more than the one that had a single dynasty, even if it is arguably the greatest dynasty in NFL history.

That’s the most sincerely laughable argument I’ve read in a few weeks.

Yeah man, everyone knows “iconic” means to have success with different coaches.

Because that’s what I said

I’m sorry you are struggling to follow the discussion.

Are there any particular points where you need some help understanding what people are talking about?

Or you could just say

hurr durr ... 6 super bowls ... ICONIC!

The “points” you bring up are so silly it doesn’t warrant clarification.

You’re calling two of their Super Bowl teams “also rans,” which is nothing more than a cheap attempt attempt at whittling away at their overall legacy.

“let Belichick do it again without Brady and we can talk.”

Yes, because a team can’t be “iconic” unless the head coach can have success with multiple QBs under center. I mean everyone know that! Right?

And for the most inane claim: “Lots of people don’t even really recognize the Patriots as being a Boston team, and those who do, have the Pats as they third most iconic franchise in their own city, behind the Celtics and Red Sox.”

Smh, yeah bro, people in Boston don’t accept the Pats as their hometown.

Loooool, you can’t make this stuff up!

Many of the most iconic teams have been around 75-85 years (Chicago, Green Bay, NYG, Pittsburgh). Then there’s San Fran and New England in the last 30 years. Finally, we have the team with largest fanbase, the most valuable franchise...”America’s Team”.

Nice list. I'd probably add Packers and Pats to it.
