After the Cowboys excellent offseason, there are no more excuses
https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/202...y-lamb-dalton-mccoy-poe?ref=NEWSandRUMORS.com

As a media site covering the Dallas Cowboys, we do our best to be as objective and factual as possible. Still, occasionally we can let some of our allegiance to the Star creep into things. There can be a nearly unavoidable tendency to try to see the best in the team. That includes players, coaches, and even Jerry Jones himself. When things go south for the Cowboys, as they seem to do every other year or so, explanations of what went wrong while trying to delineate the issues can end up sounding like excuses. Examining the many positives in what certainly looks to be a dynamite offseason in Dallas, it almost appears that the team was listening to the fans, and this site’s, biggest excuses complaints about the team and sought answers. If that’s the case, there are no more excuses to be made, here or anywhere.

There has been so much already written and discussed in the media about the remarkable draft haul Dallas had. Logically, it came about because of the new directions McCarthy and his staff wanted, along with letting Will McClay and his scouts have a lot of control over things during the unique circumstances caused by the pandemic response. For whatever reason, there was tremendous value in the first six picks. CeeDee Lamb may well have been the best wide receiver in a very strong class, and yet two others went off the board before the Cowboys saw him land in their lap. Trevon Diggs was a borderline first-round talent, Neville Gallimore was generally seen as a high-to-mid second-round prospect, and Reggie Robinson II was reportedly moving up on a lot of boards before the draft. Tyler Biadasz may well turn into a true steal after being injured in his last college season and well worth trading a future pick to move up and grab him, and many were simply amazed Bradlee Anae was there at the tail end of the fifth round. It was an incredible display of trusting the board and letting the draft come to them, aided by some interesting decisions by the other 31 teams. Even the apparent flyer taken on Ben DiNucci in the seventh makes sense in light of reports that multiple teams were willing to bid on him as a priority UDFA. All that is based on what the team has revealed about its own draft board. Franchises obviously differ there, but the broad spectrum of well-regarded outside draft boards largely agreed with the team’s evaluations. That is highly encouraging. If this class pans out, it could lead to a very bright future for the Cowboys.

Turning it up a notch in free agency
Stephen Jones still did not spend big dollars in free agency, but the cost-effective signings this year just look different than recent efforts. And a lot better. The big three are, of course, Gerald McCoy, Dontari Poe, and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. That is not to disrespect other signings like Maurice Canady, but that trio represents bigger names with more accomplished careers than we have seen in a long time. Further, the team made a clear pivot on the positions it addressed. Free agency is supposed to be where you address holes so that you don’t have to resort to need too much during the draft. This year, the Cowboys finally went out and got some players at some positions they have tended to neglect. A very productive 3-tech DT, a big, space-eating nose tackle with some respectable ability to penetrate in pass defense, and a true ball-hawking safety are just not things we are used to getting individually, much less as a group, in the space of a few days...

Another change in philosophy
After the draft, it didn’t take long for Dallas to make another big move, signing veteran quarterback Andy Dalton after he was shunted aside by the Cincinnati Bengals to make room for Joe Burrow. Despite the social media ravings about him being some kind of competition for the starting job, in truth he is a high-quality backup for Dak Prescott...

...If the Cowboys fall short, none of the old excuses will hold much water. Even having a mostly new coaching staff cannot be called on. This one has too much experience and past success for that to fly. Count me as one who doesn’t think we will need to make any excuses this year.

New coach and staff needs to get acquainted with team. Corona virus shortens pre-season.

Dak inflating Dalton's balls.

There will be a few.

I always get a kick out of threads claiming no more excuses? when has excuses ever faded the heat when this organization loses?
I have big expectations for this team if they fail it will be a big disappointment but I learned a long time ago sports is filled with disappointment and short lived celebrations

It's time the organization again walks on the merit of it's own feet...not the past.

Three of the past six seasons, the team has had a dominant regular season. That was with a ton of dead bones...

Well, those bones have been officially, interned now.

No excuses linger and no, the Dallas new coach won't be given the 7 years that Andy Reid had in Kansas City...let's go!

Again I give no excuse now or in the past. I will say there have been teams that were not as talented but I do think in the past few seasons this team has been talented enough to challenge and has failed. I have big expectation and if they fail then as a fan all I can do is voice my disappointment nothing more and nothing less. It is like an meaningless ultimatum, what if they disappoint you, me or all of us this season what are you going to do?

I understand my role as a fan, I can support the team or not really my only 2 options.

The haters had their way last season, with the Cowboys epically underachieving despite possessing one of the most talented rosters in football. Dallas squandered a completely winnable NFC East by going 8-8, missing the playoffs after getting swept by the Philadelphia Eagles.

That failure cost Jason Garrett his job, with Jerry Jones opting to hire one of the most proven head coaches available in Mike McCarthy. The former Packers’ head man, who has a Super Bowl ring on his resume, will be entrusted to guide Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and Amari Cooper to Dallas’ first title since 1996.

The Cowboys’ defense is also an underrated unit, but it did take a hit losing talented performers like Robert Quinn and Byron Jones in free agency. There is still plenty for defensive coordinator Mike Nolan to work with, including talented edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence and linebacker Leighton Vander Esch.

...as to you being a fan, THAT is your business, don't assume that I enter what is yours and understood.

I'm just saying when people say no excuse I ask or what? I make no excuse this team has had very good talent to win and yet continue to take 1 step forward then 1 step back. It s frustrating no doubt. But again if they fail then what?

The NFL is a no excuse league. Any NFL owner, executive or head coach who offers excuses any year, any time for any reason is lowering standards. Jerry has been the best excuse maker in the NFL in the last 20+ seasons.

How do we know that? Simple. He and his kids keep their executive level positions year after year without much in playoff results. The fact that they keep their jobs despite a lack of playoff results happens because the owner makes excuses. And the first big excuse is, “I own the team and I can do whatever I want.” That is an excuse for the last nearly quarter century.

Hopefully Jerry has learned some things and we are starting a new successful era. As a Cowboys fan for nearly 60 years, I really want that to be true.

Can't wait until we start out 8-0. If Dak at QB, wow, what would the haters say, make excuses it is the team and not him?
What if it is Dalton, the Dak haters would say he could not get this team to 8-0.
It will never end.

However it will be like the 2014, 2016, 2018 seasons, almost all go back into the woodwork. :lmao:

Man, I hope not. It would be sweet if the Cowboys put another 1st on their historic resume.... Coronavirus Cure by winning the Super Bowl. Lots of healing with that alone!

Agree completely. I was literally just eating lunch thinking about how this offense would lineup. There are going to be so many mismatches and no one is e even really talking Zeke. We need a serviceable D getting pressure and should be able to win.

There are always excuses. First, there are injuries. Unless the Cowboys go injury free for the entire season, that excuse will always be available. Then, the draft looks good on paper, but we really how no idea if any of these players will excel as a pro. Lots of first, 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks have failed to make an impact in their rookie seasons. Then, there is the free agency signings. McCoy and Poe are retreads. If they play like it they will have that as an excuse too. Add to that the players lost to free agency. The salary CAP is a ready made excuse. They wanted to sign Byron Jones but couldn't make the numbers work.

There are good for any given season, but this season the have the new coach/limited off-season/preseason because of COVID-19. Lot's of excuses ready to go this season.

I honestly think the cowboys are going to be a good team though. The two DTs are going to strengthen the defense and I think we will see the LBs bounce back this year. I think the secondary will be about the same, maybe a little better at creating turnovers. I think the offense is also going to be a little better. I think having Jarwin at TE full time and adding Lamb to the WRs will make them better. I am assuming they solve the Center - LG problem. The Cowboys have an opportunity to be a really good team. This doesn't mean they will win the Super Bowl, but it does mean they will beat some good teams. I can see them winning their division again.

I don't think McCarthy is here on a 1 year deal or win it all or your gone. I also think with as much player movement as we see on a yearly basis some changes will always take place. I do agree with the overall view of this team having talent to win and much of it will fall to this coaching staff to utilize the talent to get the most out of them.

If McCarthy doesn't win, he has but a 3-4 window. Heads would start to fall then.

I'm not worrying about any of that, myself...this team is already set on the next journey. They should compete with any other team...NOW!

I for one believe that, everything else going on aside, the drop in padded practices could hurt the newcomers a decent amount. Or, a new coaching staff coming in trying to implement new wrinkles, or an entire system.

Either way, I feel this might be an issue.
