the article didnt suggest that we trade for aaron rodgers.
it said if....if....Dallas is gonna move on from Dak....they will have competition....with green bay putting rodgers on the market.

if Dak were on the back side of his career...i'd agree with the premise.
but he isn't.
we have drafted well....im of the opinion that we should also try to keep them.
eventually we should move on...but not now.

we have a good young QB on the front side of his career who continues to get better that we can win with...right now.
we finally got him a competent coach.
we should keep him and enjoy the fruits of our draft labors.

Dak isn't going anywhere.

It's that simple.

The presented concept could work and very effectively...giving a two to three window coming out of this pandemic season.

Would Jerry risk that kind of gamble at this point in the franchise history...that I doubt. He shoots for up front 'cash' in his changes.

Dallas Cowboys should keep an eye on Packers quarterback situation
https://thelandryhat.com/2020/05/08/dallas-cowboys-packers-quarterback-situation/

The winning blueprint in the NFL has been to find a franchise quarterback. But has that strategy shifted? And what does that mean for the Dallas Cowboys?
The Dallas Cowboys had a very successful 2020 NFL Draft with a rookie class that is value-driven and heralded as their best in almost two decades. But the story of the draft was the Green Bay Packers trading up in the first round to draft a quarterback with the 26th pick. The Packers have a quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, who is Hall of Fame worthy and is still playing at a high level. He is signed for four more years and has expressed a desire to finish the contract which makes the Packers decision to draft Jordan Love fascinating...

...Rodgers will cost $21.6 million for the 2020 season according to spotrac.com which is a relative bargain for a quarterback at 10.9 percent of the salary cap. His cap hit rises to $36.4 million in 2021, $39.9 million in 2022, and $28.4 million in 2023. On the other hand, Love will likely cost the Packers $12.4 million total over the next four years when he signs his contract with the Packers having a team option for a fifth cost-controlled year. Montez Sweat was the 26th pick in the 2019 NFL draft and signed a four year $11.6 million contract which was 6.8 percent higher than the four-year, $10.9 million contract Calvin Ridley signed in 2018 as the 26th pick in the draft...

...I think the Packers will strongly consider trading Rodgers at the end of the 2020 season. This would be the same move the Chiefs made when they traded Alex Smith after the 2017 season and turned the franchise over to Patrick Mahomes paying dividends with a Super Bowl championship in 2019. The Packers will absorb a $31 million dead cap in 2021 but will have three years after that with an affordable quarterback...

...Could the Dallas Cowboys get in front of the curve by not signing their quarterback Dak Prescott to a long term deal? Might the Cowboys be able to flip Prescott at the end of the 2020 season and dip back into the rookie contract quarterback pool? If they do, they better be warned. The Green Bay Packers just might have their own Hall of Fame quarterback on the trade market at the same time.

This all kinds of pure speculation. First Love will be on a known rookie contract for a minimum of 4 years and as such there is no salary consideration to this. Second, unless the packers start to complain about Rodgers it is again just speculation of any move to go with Love. A little packer history. When Rodgers 4 year rookie contract he threatened not to sign a new one to be a backup again. So the packers traded Favre after 16 seasons with the packers and threatening to retire for the three previous seasons. Now people are speculating that after just one season the packers would trade away the same QB that started for them for the last 12 season and the only QB that has a Super Bowl win since Favre while a rookie that would still have a minimum of 3 more seasons left on his rookie contract. One more thing on your example with Smith who hadn't done much of anything and was no way ever in the same world as Rodgers.

Then we have Prescott who has been publicly pronounced by the Cowboys as their QB for now and the future. A future that as many more years left than Rodgers who will then be 37 and have 17 seasons in. Not to mention that Prescott since the 2019 season ended until the franchise tag was offered was the number one ranked free agent in the ENTIRE NFL. But some here want to just let him walk or think the Cowboys would get a big deal for him if he ends up signing a long term contract before July 15 or the Cowboys have to apply the franchise tag again after this season all based on the speculation that a QB going into his 16th season si going to become available in a trade.

While making these speculations why not speculate that somehow the Cowboys get J.J. Watt, Clowney, Marshon Lattimore and Jalen Ramsey too.

From what I understand, Rodgers and McCarthy didn’t get along, right? So that would squash this thought immediately.
Rodgers is an ego maniac. He won't get along with any coach with any sort of spine

This is a completely different point...and could be another way that Dallas could be falling behind on current trends to get ahead of the current quagmire as to cap figures. It doesn't involve just the concept of a lingering offer to Dak. More is involved...

I would not consider Rogers "current" in any sense of the word. With McCarthy, been there done that. His age has started to belie his abilities; and why would this team consider him, when he would not want to play in Dallas.

If Dalton doesn't work out this season picking up Rodgers would be a gimmie for us....and a Superbowl Gimmie at that!

Although that is valid...there are more players on the stage that would work, and a change doesn't have to include an outside source at QB. Dalton is still available as well, but the direction changes involve a 5 year window at very cheap prices, and the possible drafting of the top QB in next year's draft. Shortly, an upgrade for Prescott, possibly.

The comments on that article are hilarious: "Don't say anything bad about Dak here, you'll immediately be labelled a hater".

Sounds oddly familiar...

I think Dalton is gone regardless, next year. Dak, is not going anywhere.

Here's an even bigger reason why this is just wild speculation. McCarthy and Rodgers have no love loss between them. Their continuous dislike for each other was widely publicized and I seriously doubt he would want to have him even for just a couple of years.

More than likely...Jerry once didn't want to pay a linebacker a contract for $ 1 million. He learned a lesson on retaining talent.

I agree with you, Jerry won't let him out the door...

Good post. I posted the same exact thing the day of the draft on this board and I was wholeheartedly shot down.
I think it makes sense. The only problem is the cap hit the Packers would face in trading him as the signing bonus hits the cap all at once. It's a really crappy system that prohibits trades in the NFL.
That's a big problem....

While FanSided‘s Matt Verderame reported at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine up in Indianapolis the 2021 NFL salary cap could reach upwards of $240 million, it might be $30 to $80 million lower than the $198.2 million it is for 2020. If we’re looking at something in the $150 million range for 2021, there is no way Prescott will garner $35 million on a new deal from Dallas.

https://fansided.com/2020/05/08/gardner-minshew-fantasy-breakout-2020/

This could even affect a smart agent concerning signing a new contract now, for Dak Prescott.
