In the history of the NFL there has only been one Shut Down Corner!

Then by your standard it’s impossible to be a shutdown corner.

A shutdown corner is a guy you put on the other teams best WR and know they are going to more or less take them out of the game. That doesn’t mean 0 catches.
If words matter when we speak, which we all know they do, we all should stop saying shut down corner and start saying cover corner. I know a cover corner doesn’t sound as impressive, and it’s not, as a shut down corner, but it is by far more accurate to say, Deion is a great cover corner, rather than a great shut down corner.

You yourself, said a shut down corner is a guy you put on the other teams best receiver, and they are going to MORE OR LESS take them out of the game. You are describing a great cover corner, not a shut down corner. A shut down corner, by definition, completely shuts out the receiver, there is no more or less, shuts him out. He does shut him out!

Again, no one has been, or is, a shut down corner, but there have been some great cover corners.

Deion is the best cover corner in NFL history!

I started this thread agreeing that Deion was the only shut down corner in NFL history. I was wrong! As great as Deion was, and he was great, by definition, he was not a shut down corner. Just rewatch the NFC Championship game with Michael and Deion going head to head.

Deion was the best corner ever to play the game imo and is my favorite player ever

but Darrell green was shutdown as well......
So was Rod woodson

and Mel Blount literally has a rule named after him just so they could open the passing game up
Michael Irvin sure didn't struggle that much against him. DS was good but he was over rated too.

------Nobody could beat Deion

Except Michael who simply ABUSED him in a game in Atlanta, to the point that he was tipping over benches and throwing a tantrum.

The only Shut Down Corner in the history of the NFL was Deon Sanders!

Can be annoying as a analyst, but one hell of a cover corner!

I disagree, although there aren't many, I can list at least 2 others.

1. HOF - #37 Jimmy Johnson CB, 49ers from '61-'76
2. HOF - #40/#22 Mike Haynes CB, Patriots/Raiders '76-'89

Deion was the most over-rated corner ever. Give me Everson Walls over the guy who was allergic to tackling.

He rarely needed to tackle because the ball almost never went his way.

Everson Walls didn't have teams only throw 1 or 2 passes at his side a game like Sanders did. Walls was a really good corner but he wasn't in the same class as Sanders.

Sort of like Roy Williams having the horse collar tackle banned because of him.

You betcha. Lane not only holds the league record for most interceptions in a season (14) but did it when the NFL played 12-game seasons and did it as a rookie.

He was the best Corner at interceptions. 7x Pro Bowler. Picking the All-time best Corner is like picking the best All-time Quarterback. It's impossible. Different era's made/had different legends.

There's a couple of things to keep in mind when talking about Lane. Back then they played bump and run which kept the back close to the receiver making it easier for a back to get a pick. Receivers did get the separation they get in today's game. Also back then an offensive player couldn't tip a ball and then another offensive player touch it again before being touched by a defensive player making it if a receiver tipped a ball a corner had a better shot at a pick. The best that receiver could do would have been try to get in the way of the back to keep it from getting picked.. But for his time Lane was the man.
