So in the last 5 seasons, who have been the most underrated players on our roster? This covers 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The definition of “underrated” for this thread will be “players that made important contributions without as much recognition or appreciation“.

Here are my 5 and why:
  • La’el Collins- On an OL loaded with accolades (Zack Martin, Ty Smith) Collins too often gets overlooked. He’s an absolute road grader at times in both the run and passing game . I’m glad the FO has him locked up for a while.
  • Michael Gallup- After only two seasons, Gallup is IMO, the most improved player we’ve drafted lately. He has averaged 50 catches for over 800 yards in his first two seasons. Cooper and Lamb will get all all the spotlight, but Gallup is a stud in the making.
  • Blake Jarwin- obviously with a new contract in his pocket, he’s seen as a guy on the rise. Stuck behind 90 year old Jason Witten last year, he still caught 31 passes and averaged nearly 12 yards per catch, one of the highest ypc for a TE. Hopefully in a larger role next year, he will blossom even more.
  • LP Ladoceur- about to start season #16 as the all important snapper on FGs, XPs and punts. As reliable as the sunrise. Has played for Parcells, Wade Phillips, Jason Garrett and now Big Mike.

  • Anthony Brown- Former 6th round pick, not spectacular but reliable as a versatile corner. Team thinks enough of him to give him a new 3 year deal. This is a guy that every good team needs. An affordable, reliable veteran.
So there are my five most underrated Cowboys since 2015.
Who are yours?

Great post, I like that you included Brown. Most people on the forum will unanimously agree on the other 4 guys you listed. But Brown gets a lot of heat around here and people call for his head in place of JLew, when both are almost identical statistically and in analytical grades.

At 5’11 running a 4.3 with an aggressive nature, he’s perfect to man the slot on a press-man team. Has the speed and quickness to stay with guys in the slot but also the size and strength to be disruptive, this even allows him to give you snaps outside.

You said it best, every team needs affordable veterans who do their job in order to be solid all across the board. We’ll see all of our DB’s improve with better coaching, interesting to see how big of a leap Brown takes. We may really have stolen him for 5M a season.

Cole Beasley.
Beasley was good, and I appreciated his game, but I think he was slightly overrated around here. Over his career here in Dallas, he averaged about 3 receptions for 29 yards per game. Most fans would not have guessed that.

His best career season was 2016 (Surprise- under Dak by the way) when he caught 75 passes for 833 yards, averaging 4.5 receptions for about 50 yards a game. Other than that season, he was just a slightly above average slot guy, even though he occasionally certainly made some big plays. IMO, Buffalo overpaid for him.

That's a good one, but he and Dak just didn't have the connection for some reason. Last year on 3rd down I kept wondering what could have been if it had worked out.
Beasley’s career best season was under Dak in 2016. He had the most receptions (75) and and most yards (833) of his career. Most people think he had his best year under Romo.

he wanted too much for what his production was, but the flip side is I would have loved to have seen him under the new coaching staff. Beasley, Romo, Dez with a proper coaching staff would have been great to see.

I'm referring more to the last year he was here, they just couldn't put it together.

Nice list, Bob.
Random fact; LP Ladoceur is the last remaining player on the Cowboys to have played with one of the players from the 90s dynasty (he was teammates with Larry Allen in 2005).
You could also say that he played with a guy (Larry Allen) who played with a guy drafted by Landry (Irvin, for example).

Collins was basically 1st round talent we received because of his alleged off field discretions. . Not sure how he’s been under rated. If anything over rated.

Gallup has been our starting #2 reciever. Again not under rated. Great 3rd round pick.

Jarwin going to be our starting TE this season. How is that under rated?

And Brown has been a steal for a 6th round pick . Not sure how’s he’s under rated?

Im confused by this thread.
