Independent of whether or not Nolan has been good or bad, this defense will create a lot more turnovers just by being more varied. They're also going to give up a lot more big plays, if I had to guess. They're going with the opposite philosophical approach to defense than they had under JG. The multiple fronts/looks is evidence of that, and it's the 2014 Falcons defense that they're going to look to replicate.
I'm most excited for what they might do out of a 3-3-5, with Jaylon as a rusher .
I think he is referring to the fact that Diggs was considered the best at playing the ball in the air of the CBs in this draft. It was also one of the top skills of Robinson. They both tend to look back at the ball which seemed to be a problem with the Cowboys CBs for a long time.
It rarely broke. Our defense has been flawed for many years. It was always bending and always breaking. I want to entire philosophical change. Something that Garrett and Co. was too scared to implement during his watch.
But it bent to the point it lost its elasticity. It rarely broke.
If your in press man your back is going to be turned to the QB... doesn't matter who's coaching. We don’t have Richard. We have linguist and Harris. 8/
What an excellent post. Great work!New Cowboys D-Coordinator Mike Nolan's 2014 Atlanta Falcons Defensive formations:
Side Note:
- These are just for demonstration. Not saying the 2014 Falcons were great.
- The Falcons defense had very limited talent in 2014.
- They had 3 starters go to IR. Both inside LBs were UDFA types.
- They had some "name" players at the end of their careers.
Nolan used hybrid DE/LB type players.
#17 Kroy Biermann (6-3, 255) - The primary hybrid
#93 Malliciah Goodman (6-4, 276)
#94 Jonathan Massaquoi (6-2, 265)
Standard 4-2-5 Nickel (#71 at DE)
Big 4-3 (#71 at OLB)
3-3-5 vs 3 WRs
3-2-6
It rarely broke.
Yea, so 3 times in the last 3 years. Good one. When was the last time we stopped anyone from converting a 3rd down when we needed to?
It sure broke when Rogers converted that 3rd and forever play to put them into field goal range.
It also broke when we played the Rams in the playoffs.
It bothers me that GB never struck me as a defensive power house, but I think that was strictly their FO & not Mike. I'm hoping the Cowboys are ready to start fixing our defense.
That's what's keeping me from being full tilt behind the new staff. Although somebody on here seemed quite familiar with Nolan & thought he was a great choice.MM isn’t a D coach.
Nolan and MM are big buddies.
that’s why Nolan is DC.
scary.

No matter how much you rag on Nolan, he is a substantial upgrade over
Richard (who clearly ran the entire defense) and Marinelli (who allowed it).
Richard didn't want to disguise defensive schemes.
Coming from riding coattails of talent in Seattle, he felt the
defense should just line up and play.
Your hero is a fraud. Nolan improves the defense the moment he walks into
the building.
Where’s Richard coaching now?
not here.
last I read he wanted a HC or another DC gig.
he is an elite coach.
we were lucky.
