Draft order if no season

So was driving and had a question pop in my mind was wondering if someone knew the answer. Say they don't play this season would 2021 draft order be the same as this year minus any trades? It would be a very interesting draft cause one would assume no college season so judging players on 2019 and they haven't played in a year. You could go into 2021 with two classes of rookies.

There would be other questions to answer before you even get to that. What would college football do with their seniors? Do they get to play another year? Would there even be a draft?

Yeah i was thinking that too. I feel like if kids felt they were going to be drafted they wouldn't stay another year cause getting older and losing out on second and third contracts. I also wondered if they wouldn't have a draft cause you would be basing your pick on 2019 tape big gamble.

I think this is an unlikely scenario, but if it happened, something like
  • Senior bowl increased to 8 teams with 2 weeks practice & two games (16 games total). Held in March
  • Must have nominated for the draft to be eligible, and based on rankings
  • Draft reduced to 4 draft rounds
  • Change in draft eligibility requiring players be 4-years out of highschool (No juniors)
  • Draft order repeat of last years order with new compo picks and trades

There probably wouldn’t even be a draft because that means no NCAA football either.

Exactly...………….if no NFL season I highly doubt there would have been a college season as well.

So does the NCAA give an extra year of eligibility if the season gets wiped out?

Lots and lots of questions would need to be answered.

If I'm a college player that just went through no season in 2020 and I am eligible for the 2021 draft, then I am definitely signing up. I'd rather be a pro-player if something like this happens again than still be in college.

To be NFL draft eligible, you only have to be 3 years removed from your high school graduating class. There potentially being no college season in 2020 will not impact NFL eligibility. It will only impact how the NFL evaluates the players, but the NFL still will want to bring in young and relatively cheap talent if it can in 2021

It most certainly would not be fair to just use the same draft order as in 2020. A weighted lottery is the closest thing to fair as they will get. Base it on the record of the teams previous 3 seasons or something similar. I even think they should do a lottery for each round and the deeper the draft the less they weigh the records.

In my opinion, I think there is a stronger chance of there being an NFL season, but not a college season. Still lots of time to figure things out.

If there was a draft and no season for the ncaa at least that resulting draft class will have either huge steals or huge busts.

To me the most fair thing to do would be do the same lottery system as the NBA. The worst teams get the most ping pongs....gives some average teams a shot to get a higher pick but makes sure the better teams don't get a top 10 pick. Seems like the most fair thing to me.

Yeah I wonder who even enters the draft at that point? I think the only people who'd feel that pressure are seniors.....that would be a very tough draft.......

No season no draft. I'm sure the teams that picked top 10 wouldn't mind but also its harder to evaluate the guys still in college if they don't play.

there will definitely be a draft,a one year absence in NCAA games will not affect student eligibility.i read that were considering something similar to what the NHL did after the lockout season..

I think a combination of both. Kinda wouldn’t be fair if the Bengals, Commanders and Lions got 1-2-3 again, but any system that could allow the Chiefs to pick top 5 would be out of the question. Weighted lottery the way the NBA does for non playoff teams would make sense

I don't dwell in the negatives. There will be a season.

plenty of draft eligible underclass men would still make the jump. Numbers would be down based off trends, but I think it wouldn’t dip below say, 10 years ago

I agree. Probably worth pointing out though, that the NFL experiences a lot more turn around then NBA teams. It’s not that uncommon for teams with bottom records to get good and fast. In the NBA, it’s rare unless you add a LeBron James

This is true. There's too many pieces it takes to be good in the NFL. But like just using this year as a example if there was some kind of random draft order were the Chiefs got the 2nd pick and got Chase Young? Would be unfair. I think it should still make sure that great teams don't get impact prospects like that.
