Is Jourdan Lewis going to be the odd man out?

Two things are equally true:

1) He’s our best playmaker; and

2) He also was abused last season with regularity (watch the Bills and the last Commanders games specifically)

Opposing QBs completed 68.4% of their passes against him in 2018, 68.8% in 2019.

(2018/2019)
Byron Jones 52.5/53.1
Chido 56.8/59.8
Brown 62.5/60.0

I think it is safe to say that the whole secondary played terrible. However, I would give them a mulligan based of the "SHOW COVER THREE AND DON'T LOOK BACK FOR THE BALL" Scheme. LOL

Now that we have a competent coaching staff he’ll get the chance in training camp to earn the starting job. He’s earned the right to compete. Who knows how the competition will turn out.
All players have to show up in Camp. Even if it is short...

Lewis has to at least shine here...

The last thing working against Jourdan Lewis in 2020 is Chidobe Awuzie’s new position. Chido is expected to move to a box safety role which means he’ll be matching up in the slot plenty next season.

As we’ve discussed before, box safety and slot cornerback have a lot of overlap and Chido’s an excellent inside cover man. This basically means it’s going to be tough for Lewis to see the field again in 2020 since two players will be slated ahead of him inside.

I know that Lewis has been a fan favorite. He didn't have the "length" the last coaching staff was looking for. All the CB's we picked up and drafted this year all seem to have the same height and wingspan.

So, what ends up happening with Lewis? Does he remain a backup? Does he change positions? I don't love him...but I certainly don't hate him. I honestly thought he might be trade bait during the draft.

I'm just curious what the rest of you think will happen with Lewis going forward.

Lewis did not play more because Anthony Brown had been a better player.

There is minimal difference in their size/length. Brown is 1 inch taller, 4 pounds heavier (when drafted) and has 1/8" longer arms.

Coaches didn't choose Brown over Lewis because of a 1" height difference...

Lewis was severely miscast in Richards/Marinelli's cover-3 scheme. He even seemed to lose some of the technical ability he had. I think he has a chance to be a high-level starter, but you're going to have to re-coach some bad habits out of him, just like Awuzie. I think the defensive backfield is really going to struggle early on when put on an island, I just hope it comes together in time for the playoffs. I definitely see Lewis making a play or two on his own to win games though.
