I liked Journey best when both Steve Perry and Greg Rolie were in the band. They started with Greg Rolie and no Steve Perry, and Rolie was the lead singer. Then Perry came along and was exactly the right lead singer to change their sound. They were amazing with Perry on lead vocals but with Rolie's soothing, soulful voice backing him up, and also Rolie helping with the songwriting. IMO when they lost Rolie and he was replaced with Jonathan Cain, they lost a step. They actually got more popular and had huge hits with Cain, but IMO they weren't as good. I liked them okay at that point, but I didn't love them like I had before.
Journey was part of the Fab Four at that time, them, REO, Styx and Kansas. It was seldom you would hear a song by one of them that wasn't followed by a song form one of the others because they were so connected. I was surprised they never tried to form a supergroup from the bands when that was a thing.

I recently saw a PBS concert with Dennis DeYoung doing the songs of Styx and he can still hit the notes. Most of those guys have lost some of that range but he was impressive and I was surprised by the catalogue. The hits just kept on coming and I had forgotten how many they had.

Kansas is the only one of these bands I'd put on my list.

I recently saw John Fogerty perform some of his CCR hits live. He could still sing those songs, though the sound of his voice has changed. He sounds older, which I guess is to be expected. It's cool that he can still hit all the notes that he needs to, and his older voice sounds even more rustic than his younger one did.

You got to have that in your collection when you are dating. its a must. Its not bro stuff but if you are trying to catch a lassie it doesn't hurt.
And that doesn't stop once you catch her. For every Rammstein album you play on the patio because you've had one two many and actually thought she'd like that, you have to counter with an Air Supply, Abba and Fleetwood Mac and you damned well better sing along with the parts she knows.

Anyone mention Stone Temple Pilots yet?
Not at the top band, but they were talented. Skilled and sophisticated musically
Kind of a rock band with some occasional grunge mixed in, depending on the song.

Abba and Air Supply were off limits to me, no matter what.
Fleetwood Mac was ok enough though

Lots of good mentions in this thread. Van Halen and ZZ Top are two of the best concerts I ever saw. One band name I will throw out there is Cheap Trick. I wouldn't call them the best but they were really good live.
