Jarwin should be a big upgrade over 2019 Witten

We could have plucked a lot of guys off the street and had them be upgrades over Witten the past few years, he's the posterchild for what's wrong with our front office.

If he's the posterchild, i'm not too worried.

It is pretty telling that Mm wanted no part of having Witten around.

MM likes to the use the TE as a weapon. Jarwin can definitely be that guy. Witten is too slow and probably wanted to get rid of the old guard leadership structure as well.

I was in favor of Witten coming back last season, thought he would help with run blocking and in critical situations but feel like probably hendered Jarwins development. I definitely think now it is for the best he moved on. Great player for many years but sometimes you gotta call it a day.

I was not in favor because I knew it would be utter garbage that he'd assume a backup role. He'd insist on starting to the detriment to the development of the other TE's and Coach Garrett would clap the entire time. He was a great Cowboy and player in his day. That day had moved on. He came back when he shouldn't have.

MM didn’t bring Witten back because he sucked.

Spot on. Everyone who had any sense saw last year coming regarding Witten.

Witten is one of my favorite players of all time. All time. But, he's 38. No matter how bad he or the fans might want it, he is never going to be 28 again.

It’s not all about speed, people. Witten’s slower than he used to be but he can still play in this league.

Yes, he fell off, and he’s no longer a Pro Bowl-caliber TE. He dropped more passes last year alone than I remember him dropping in his entire career previously. The 1-year layoff hurt him.

But that doesn’t mean he can’t still play. Getting open is a skill. Setting up LBs/DBs with subtle head fakes, hesitation moves, finding soft spots in the zone, etc... those are the skills that made Jason Witten a future Hall of Famer and one of the greatest TEs in NFL history.

It was NEVER about speed or athletic ability with #82.

Yes, I’m biased. I absolutely love Witten and everything he stands for. But some of you guys need to put some respect on that man’s name. Here’s hoping he balls out in Vegas and makes people eat their words.

For Witten being old school and learning under Parcells, he’s gotten some diva in him by expecting to be given things he hasn’t earned. Being the top dog for Monday Night Football and being preliminarily approached by Tennessee to be their head coach gave him an inflated ego.

A squat in the middle TE would be nice to have with all the receiving talent we have now. But I'll take one that can go over the top for home runs too.

If he does, then I will be even more POed at the last staff, as that means they played favorites yet again.

I don't know what squat in the middle TE means, but we did sign one of the best blocking TE's in the NFL in Belldozer.

Inflated ego? What exactly do you base that on? Be specific.

Witten does two things that I have yet to see Jarwin do well. 1) block in the running game. 2) Get open on those crucial 3rd down and 6 yard plays. I know Witten could not get downfield like Jarwin, and he wasn't going to outrun anyone but he had the smarts to find the open spots for Dak to throw too. Sometime a 6 yard catch can be a huge play in a game. Witten can still do that. That doesn;t mean I would re-sign him, it just means I think its something we may miss in 2020. Perhaps another receiver will become Dak's go to guy. Maybe even Lamb.

Witten should have retired 2-3 seasons ago.

To quit the team right after the draft to go run off to the booth was weak. He then sucked in the booth and runs back to the game, smh.

Of course Garrett and the Jones’ are culpable for taking him back and making him an integral part of the offense after his retirement.

Folks are overplaying his impact in the passing game the last few years. Defenses were simply content letting him catch the short underneath stuff. This was shown with his high catch rate but abysmal yards/per target his past two seasons playing.

I am and was a big JW fan but even I saw he was rolling downhill last year He needed to go.

Several people have alluded to the fact that his avg yards per catch went down and his blocking skills started to suck along with an absent threat down field. Simple ... he got older, got lazy about moving his feet (blocking skill), lost downfield speed for the seam routes. He was still excellent at using his body to shield the defender away from the ball on them little Garret inside hook patterns ... but then he lost the edge on catching the ball so more drops from him. Last year showed he'd lost his edge a lot and I think it was from taking 2018 off to broadcast.

Than it must have been really painful watching Jarwin block. Jarwin was worse.

Agree, and we could telegraph the play with the catching Jarwin vrs blocking Schultz... but with a more innovative catching team I suppose the unexpected is what we need.
