Connor Williams as a Center

I think Connor Williams is a natural fit at Center and am surprised it’s not talked about more.

He’s got two years experience as a starter, scored 34 on his wonderlic so should have a good understanding of the blocking assignments for the o-line and you’d think has the intelligence to pick up the subtleties at Center. I also always thought he looked a bit passive as a guard. He was still massively improved last year, so I can understand some wanting to keep him at guard, but I think his footwork, flexibility, and technique make him a better fit at Center where there are less one one one assignments.

because we have Looney, MCgovern and the new draft pick to compete at C sorry it will never happen.. hes a G/T I see him better at RT or possibly a Swing tackle nut if TS retires soon you kick LC out to LT and CWill a try at RT

we have far too many C options now..the best one will emerge and Cwill wont even practice there..he will compete with the loser at C battle for LG..that will be all..

I'm iffy on Connor at Center.

I'm a little worried he could get pushed into the QB's lap or into the backfield in short yardage situations.

It's worth a try though.

Williams will get a chance to prove his mettle this year when he competes with Looney and McGovern at the center spot. Granted, it will be some tough competition and he's still young yet, so there's room for both Williams and McGovern to round into shape to compete. The rookie Biadasz is yet another who figures to be in the mix.

I really wouldn't hold it against either of them if Looney's experience at the OC position makes him the favorite -- at least early in the season. They all have some favorable talents to compete well. I'd say Williams might be hard pressed to overcome his competitors.

Whatever happens, there should be some interesting competition at center, without a doubt. If the practice time is limited, that'd likely make it considerably tougher to overcome Looney's experience. Come what may, in the end, may the best man win.

Does anyone remember Al Johnson?

Under the old regime, this may have been true. But with new coaches coming in, they'll probably try different combinations, to get their best 5 on the field.

Stephen Jones said this:
We had a second round-type pick on him and drafted him at the top of the third, and he snapped the ball at Penn State. Certainly, didn't just snap it, I think he played a year at center. And then, of course, Connor Williams has mentioned he is more than happy to help there, not to mention we've got Joe Looney who did a great job whenever Travis had to miss the year. “

So I don’t think you can completely rule it out. Both McGovern and Looney I think have more experience at guard than Center but all of them could be looked at IMO.

Help in an insane scenario if we have rash of injuries' there and that comment I believe was made before we drafted that C this year right after Tfreds sudden retirement. my money is ion the New rookie finding his way to starting C and McGovern and cwill battling for LG and Looney once again is out backup..we needed help at Tackle more IMO and I still believe RT is a great spot for Cwill

if Cwill was an option a strong candidate no reason to draft another C

If only his Wonderlic score had helped him on this play. Yes, subtleties like blocking the guy that could blow up the play.

Cherry picked? Do you know what the actual assignment was?
Maybe Frederick was too late to get there too block, could have been his assignment. Look how the defense was lined up. Williams had to come out and pick up the LB.

Whoa, you are talking about the whipping boy of many since they always need one no matter what.

Williams is our starting LG.
Looney is an adequate backup, not a long term starter.
Center will be primarily between McGovern and Biadasz.

I actually thing our starting OL week 1 will be Smith - Williams - Biadasz - Martin - Collins

Williams completely whiffed on the chip and put Fred in a bad place there. It may take a few years more for Williams to get the hang of it, he was at a disadvantage due to previous coaching and the conference he played in.

I'm willing to bet that those comments came before they drafted Tyler Biadasz. I think that's when they did, the talk of Williams at Center stopped.

I'd bet that Williams will be playing 'left handed'. Left guard and left tackle.

I’m not even sure Connor Williams is starter quality at any line position. He has been “meh” at best in his first two years. As a second round pick, I would have expected more from this guy. This year is (or whenever we have football again) critical for his future in Dallas because if keeps putting out such mediocre performances his opportunities will shrink considerably.
