Jarwin should be a big upgrade over 2019 Witten

I was in favor of Witten coming back last season, thought he would help with run blocking and in critical situations but feel like probably hendered Jarwins development. I definitely think now it is for the best he moved on. Great player for many years but sometimes you gotta call it a day.
Time to open a hardware store or something like that. I love Witten but move on to the next phase. He will after this year. One thing he won't be doing (I hope), is announcing football games.

Depends on how you look at it.

Jarwin has now been moved down the pecking order with Cee Dee Lamb arriving.

Frankly, there are not enough snaps for the TE in this offense.

If Jarwin gets in..he will get. ,3 or 4 passes max.

Schultz is going to be blocking a good bit and helping pass protection and running Zeke.

I think that is why Jarwin got a deal with out clauses after year one.

Jarwin is expendable and we all know it.

We shall see.

In my opinion, it's more about Witten being off the field. It was very easy match-up, teams would allow him to catch short-underneath passes, knowing he wouldn't do much of anything after the catch. He wasn't a threat at anything else at this juncture of his career. Jarwin can challenge a defense up the field. He won't be a primary target, but a player who can offer some big play ability.

-Garrett and MM may use the TE position differently. Everything for Garrett was based off the ground attack, thus having a strong run blocker was a requirement.

I agree run blocking is important. But the coaching staff's failure to produce good blocking TEs at the professional level is what bugs me. There is no reason to put off other talented TEs just because they can't block. If they can't block teach them. That's what coaches are for.

I've already said this much.

Yeah, that’s precisely my point.

A guy like Schultz could probably put up the same measly numbers Witten has done the past two seasons (2017 & 2019) because they were subpar for a starting caliber NFL TE.

You somehow have been trying to interpret it to mean “heeehaaw, you think Schultz is gonna be the starter!”

Well he will be giving the opportunity this season as there is no longer a progress stopper in front of him.
He wasn’t able to beat that HOF progress stopper out for the starting job or even impress enough to get more snaps. Jarwin has speed which is nice on certain plays, but he lacks the skills to be an everyday starting TE. He can’t block .

The reason why you put a TE on the field instead of a 4th WR is because you want a guy who can act as a 6th lineman or block out LB's covering him in the middle and provide an easy target for QB's as an outlet. Jason got to the point where he was underrated in his ability to sit down and just block out a defender and then slide into an open spot. He made QB's look good and catches look easy.

Jarwin brings very little of this to the table. He is effectively a WR4. If opposing teams try to cover him with a linebacker, I think he could have a good year. Against safeties, I'm not sure he is going to bring much. He isn't a good enough blocker and he doesn't have that positional shiftiness that a lot of top TE's have.

IMO, TE is going to be Dallas' biggest weakness on offense.

Note: I am not arguing that Witten was good last year.

Your caveat was "if Shultz got the snaps", he could match Witten's measly numbers. He'd have to be the starter to "get the same snaps".

Wrong again.

"I’d wager good money Schultz could have put up those same paltry numbers if given the same snaps."

As in Schultz or any scrub TE you want to name could have put up the same numbers Witten did if given the same number of snaps.

Just shutup already Joe, lol.

Right there! You just did it again. You don't know how to propose a legit wager. A legit wager has to have definable parameters and realistic expectations of being the realm of possibility in the future. You can't wager on something in the past. "could have" is past tense.

I have no doubt Jarwin's yards after the catch will be more productive. I'm hoping his blocking will improve, as well. OTOH, he's had enough time for it to be much better already, though. Suffice it to say, Witten's blocking at the end of his time with the Cowboys wasn't what it was earlier in his career. As great as he once was, the years will always take their toll. Happens to the best of 'em.

I'm not sure Jarwin got a chance to beat out Witten as he was one of Garrett's favorite players.
