That's perfectly fine. That 5th year would be all non-guaranteed funny money. He'll be either extended or cut when his guarantees run out well before that 5th year anyway.
That's what he wants, either they pay him or let him walk after they've paid him 140 for or 4, 105 for 3, if that's the guarantee, and they let him walk after 3.

Whatever they do, by 2022, they need to have the next QB1 on the team like the Packers have done twice in a row. If they're all concerned about 5 years down the road, they need to plan on that and act on it before then.

Why do these tools continue negotiating through the media? Everyone knows where the leaks come from, Stuphen has to earn his keep somehow.

Sounds like you are the delusional one lol.
Nah you're the delusional one if you think this below-average QB is worth that contract. Dak isn't a difference-maker, so why pay him like he is one? You Dak fanboys are nuts! QB contracts are out of control, and it's time for teams to start getting them more down to earth. I'm good with the cowboys being the team to start that trend. Oh and if Dak was all that he would have been signed to a deal by now.

The article covers this pretty well. Dak would prefer a 4-year deal. If they want a fifth year, he's asking for a contract $10 million higher than what they've offered ($185 vs. $175).

Sounds like
Cowboys offer: 5 years, $175, $105 guaranteed

Dak's offers:
4 years, $140 OR
5 years, $185

I don't know what the guarantees he's asking for are.
Puts the ball back in Dallas’ court

if we want the fifth year, it costs extra.

I’m also assuming it’s almost entirely guaranteed, otherwise the Cowboys could just get out of the final 45m

either one of these scenarios are fine. Just get it done.

35m for 4 years will likely be a fringe top 10 QB contract by 2023 and if we want the fifth year, 45m in 2024 will probably only be top five for that one, single, year

Honestly, the fans who hate on dak and his money are just out of touch with the reality of the league. You’re going to see above average QB’s get 35m per in the next 24 months and even average QB’s will be getting 30

The train has left the station on QB money. You guys are really a meme at this point. The old man screaming get off my lawn comes to mind

You guys should be relishing a new Dak deal. It seems your entire Cowboy fandom is wrapped up in hating Dak (and almost certainly Jaylon and Tank). Think of how much pleasure you’ll get the next four years trolling the board with posts about dollars per TD, Int, Snaps, Fumbles, etc.

It’s a troll paradise and all you have to do is embrace it

Dak being all that and not having a contract means nothing lol

Once again you have proven yourself to be delusional if you think he's "below average". I can't take your opinion serious on the matter.

"Oh he ain't all that because he ain't signed yet"....what silly logic this is and @WillieBeamen actually gave you a like for such a silly take lol. :lmao:

No way he finishes the season as the starter for us....save this post to refer back to it when reality hits hard!
He's been pampered enough and we have suffered enough....NEXT PLEASE!!!
PAPPY, pampered? He's played on a 4th rounders salary and earned any bonuses he's received.

Don't want to pay him, as I assumed as I saw that headline, fine but the guy hasn't been pampered. He's playing it tough at the table which is his prerogative.

If that’s what Dak is looking for he’ll be playing on the tag this season. His price seems to be going higher and higher. He’ll be looking for $50 million before long.

Ehhh not necessarily.

That 4th year at $45MM has a downside for the Cowboys. If he's on the roster, he's basically then guaranteed $45MM. Sure, the Cowboys could cut him if he stinks. But if he's good, there's no incentive for him to then do a restructure. He could basically tell the Cowboys to go crap in a hat and play for $45MM then hold them over the barrel for a huge contract the following year.

And the Cowboys understand this. Dak and his people are just playing hard ball here. They want a 4 year deal so they can cash in again in the 5th year. So in this sense, they are basically making that 5th year the big pay day year for him anyway.

I am not one to agree with the Jones when it comes to how they operate their front office but I think they are right to push back on this. A 5th year at $45MM is Dak giving up zero. There's not a whole lot of difference here for Dak between a 4 year deal or this ridiculous 5 year one with a massive last year payday.

Willing to bet that most people that will react to this, won't bother to read the article. All it is, is a negotiating ploy because Dak's camp does not want to sign for 5 years. The time to sign him to a 5 year deal, was before last season. Give him more than his 2019 salary of 2 million and you can probably get away with paying him less than the $35 million APY that he's going to end up getting.

And now, Dallas is trying to make up for this folly, by locking him in at $35 in year 5, and there's no way Dak is going to go for that.

If he signed last year, it would essentially have had to have been a 6 year deal which would be in line with what Goff and Wentz are signed to.

Dak wants above and beyond what those two got.

Isn't that how much of these contracts are structured though? With a high last year of the deal?

Unless I read it wrong, they want the cap hit to be 45 mil in the 5th year.

asking for somewhere like north of $45 million in that fifth year'

Which doesn't mean much. In 2021 Big Ben and Matt Ryan have cap hits exceeding 40mil

2022 Kirk Cousins cap hit is 45mil

Slight quibble. Cap hit doesn't matter to Dak and his agents. I think what they mean is they want Dak to physically get paid $45MM or more in that last year. For example, Ryan has a $41MM cap hit in 2022 but the actual cash paid is only like $26MM and the rest is prorated signing bonuses, etc. So if Dak is in the 5th year and getting $45MM in cash, his cap hit is going to be well in excess of $50MM, possibly close to $60MM.
