you are hoping for way way way too much....and the only reason Gregory started and he was average at best, was because we had nobody else....it was called desperation......and just because Gregory did it, doesn't mean he can, given he has been away for 4 years...….not many make a comeback after 4 years. I can't think of a single player and the list is short for those who make it back after 2 years....I don't even count on Gregory being any good, given he has spent more time away from football than actually playing football
When not informed...by all means, make up some negative comment and let 'er fly. Ever checked your fly?

Aldon Smith is officially part of the Cowboys.

The seventh overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Smith exploded on the NFL scene as a rookie racking up 37 total tackles and a whopping 14.0 sacks. His second season was even better, earning him both Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors in 2012 after posting an incredible 19.5 sack total.

I can't believe that he has lost all of that in five years...not enough liquor in the world to kill that in a recovered alcoholic.

You can’t believe a guy that hasn’t played in five years hasn’t lost something?

As youthful as 30 is in actuality...I'm believing in the fact that he very much is still a man. He had great talent, and hasn't misplaced that ability...oh yea, a lot of work. But he didn't accumulate injuries or that history in the interim.

Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best. The guy looks to be in great shape but 5 years is a long time, plus he needs to really prove he's turned things around. One less obstacle in the way but may more still loom.

Seems worth it if he can even be half of what he was. A good gamble.

5 year hiatus is a span of an entire NFL career. This dude will probably be a shell of his former self

A lot of World War II era athletes took years off, and then came back to play. It is not unprecedented at all.

Update: Roger Staubach took 4 years off to fight in Vietnam, then came to the Cowboys as a 27 year old rookie. Ended up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The reasons that there is doubt is that we just don't see it happen because a) not too many players try to come back from a four-year-plus layoff and b) usually the ones who do are either washed up and haven't shaken the demons that caused them to have to take the layoff.

If Smith has truly cleaned up his life and dedicated himself to his return (possibly more than he ever dedicated himself to the sport), there's no telling how good he can be since he's not a worn-out, has-been player trying this. His age and time off justifiably raise questions, but playing timewise, he's in the prime of his career having played in less than four seasons worth of games.

I don't understand what you're saying here at all.

Anyway, I'll just restate my point here. Every single time we sign a head case, Cowboys fans talk themselves up about how this player is going to change their ways, and I've just seen this song and dance too many times to believe it any more. Rolando McClain will be a changed man inside the Cowboys' structure, Greg Hardy is innocent and his woman is a lying money grubber, Randy Gregory will get the resources he needs from Jerry... I'm sorry, but problems of this magnitude virtually never go away.

Aldon Smith is a violent, low-functioning alcoholic; that's just a fact like the sky is blue. Just scrolling through his Wikipedia page, he's been hit with at least 16 separate charges in the last eight years, including five DUIs. His last DUI was just under a year ago - and y'all are claiming "he's turned his life around"? I get it, as fans that's what we want to think, but I see absolutely no signs to prove it.

The best case scenario here is that we get a couple of rotational snaps out of him at DE before he cops another alcohol charge in winter 2020 or 2021 - just like he has for every year in the past eight.

I share your concern. Also due to that full year not having passed since his last DUI. This is why I want a veteran DE to start the year there because you know nothing about what Smith and Gregory are going to give you or whether they'll even be around when the season is done.

I know he is official part of the cowboys, the comments was that I don't expect much from a guy who is 30 years old and hasn't played football in 4 years....I am not being negative, I am just not drooling, going gaga and fantasizing about a guy who has been out of football for 4 years. its called REALITY.....if you think he is going to be a big contributor, then you are playing Madden20, just set his rating to 99 and enjoy the fantasy....reality is different than the world you live in.

You are into a show for your own amusements...but for the record, when Gregory is added back to the roster, he and Smith will, when combined, contribute at least 16 sacks. Want a signature bet on that?

Advice, don't act so pompous and stick to what is actually stated...or find another burn barrel buddy to gloat with, Mr. Houston.

Houston couldn't support Bum Phillips and Earl Campbell and the Texans have done exactly what? More than the Cowboys? Naw, I don't think so...

Sig bet or cry about status to someone else...could, woulda, shoulda. Sorry, this fan is watching and not buying wooden nickels.

5 years off in the NFL is a lifetime. Longer than the average career.
