Johnson has a shot at WR6 but he needs to catch the ball.

With a full year in the system he should be NFL ready.

Yea, was having a good TC but bombed PS
Yeah we had a few of those guys. Assuming use take 6 receivers at LEAST......there's 3 positions to fight for. All of them have a good shot at making it. Noah Browns and Cedric Wilson...this might be their last chance to impress especially with this new staff.

Jon'Vea Johnson has always been one of pet cats or stealth cats, or whatever you call an under the radar player who might turn into something.

He has high end speed but was super raw last year, so he should be a different player next year after a year in the film room and weight room. The key thing about Johnson IMO is that he was at a small school (Toledo) and didn't even start in college because he was behind Diontae Johnson (who became a 3rd round pick). And he still had a 6th/7th round grade from Dane Brugler.

This is Brugler's writeup on him -

STRENGTHS: Accelerates in a blink, quickly finding his top speed…stacks cornerbacks and sustains his pace vertically to get behind the defense (his career 18.1 yards per catch ranks third best in school history)…quick feet to evade press and gain initial leverage…elusive with the ball in his hands, turning slants, screens or crossers into chunk plays…well-liked by his teammates and coaches…steady production the last three seasons despite a crowded wide receiver depth chart.

WEAKNESSES: Thin body type and lacks ideal muscle on his frame…lack of play strength stands out, struggling to match physical defenders…doesn’t have the balance or run power to break tackles…his patterns lack seasoning…needs to better vary his route speed and better shift his gears to fool coverage…doesn’t always play confident with his footwork, which affects his stem work…catches balls thrown to him but is inconsistent away from his frame or in traffic…doesn’t have return experience on special teams.

UMMARY: A part-time starter Toledo, Johnson was the backup “X” receiver in the Rockets’ offense behind Diontae Johnson, lining up across the formation. Despite coming off the bench most of his career, he found ways to impact games, leading the team with three 50-plus catches in 2018 and setting the school record with the longest play from scrimmage (98-yard catch). Johnson has the type of speed capable of creating consistent separation at the top of routes, which defenses must respect. However, there is a lot of feast or famine on this tape due to raw routes, footwork and technique. He also lacks experience on special teams. Overall, Johnson relies more on pure athleticism than nuance as a pass catcher, but his electric speed can create mismatches, projecting as a poor man’s version of Phillip Dorsett. GRADE: 6th-7th Round

My personal opinion on these types of fringe players are that all the ones that are leftover from the garrett staff will probably get phased out and the new staff will have their own group of fringe players within two seasons that fit what they want from players.

Are you saying we don't have a speed element?

Between Cooper and Smith you have your top end speed guys covered. I don't see how you keep a guy that cant be dependable catching the ball.

Has everyone forgotten Austin?

Is he too slow?

Unless he does something miraculous to catch the ball better, I don't think he makes the roster and probably gets put on the PS. Some other team might sign him if they need a WR with speed that can't catch in the spotlight.

Any thoughts on this player?

He had a lot of hype in camp and I think the last staff really liked him but he couldn’t catch the ball in the preseason..

If I remember right he was playing with the first team at times wasn’t he?

The reason I bring him up is because he is someone that might help bring a speed element to the team.

I just don’t remember too much about his Pre- season.
My thoughts are that he will need to be amazing training camp, assuming there is one, Even then, he will be lucky to make the final roster.

Drafting CeeDee pushed everyone down a spot and Johnson was already on the fringes.

4.3 speed but had too many drops last preseason
got great separation.
stashed on practice squad and that makes him a good wr6 over people like smith and brown with the last cheap year left.
if he catches better then good wr5 or 6 with 4 cheap years remaining.
if he still drops the ball, then can stash 1 more year.

I'm looking forward to see Aaron Parker in camp. 4.5 speed, size, and his ball tracking skills and hands look legit.

good call. I love how Parker snags the ball out of the air. Proves he has great hands, NFL size, and sufficient speed. Sneaky good player. Hopefully the big stage isn’t too much for him. I’m intrigued

Dare I say.. he reminds me of Dez the way he plays the jump ball in the Endzone

Officially my offensive Pet Cat.

lot of hype. lot of tripe. that's fine in a good menudo, but doesn't help on the field.

I forgot he was here, but now remember drop after drop last PS. Devin Smith had just a moment in one game. However having said that, Mike and Rogers made WR’s like him look really good in GB.

He can catch the ball well, his drops were just him trying to do much ,if he can fix it than he has as much a chance as Wilson.

He was great at getting separation, which made every quarterback want to throw his way, but he had mental lapses because he wanted to run before securing the ball. I think it eventually got into his head. Hopefully he can get it out because he was simply hard to cover in practice and in games.

I hope he can become like Miles Austin, who also had some trouble with his hands early in his career.

you're right Miles had hand catching issues too. Although it was still an issue as was the hamstring, the drops were not nearly as bad as
when he came in as an undrafted rookie like Johnson. Miles did improve in that area. So there's no reason why Johnson could not as well.

Ironically even HOF'ers like Rice and Owens had their rookie bouts with drops.

Other elements will be a challenge for Jonvea Johnson as well.- Such as his ability to finish.
Hanging onto to the catches when physically tested.
Being able to beat press at the line, which i wonder if that added to him being worn out at summer's end too.

it's a drive and a mentality with some players - some players can keep at it, .while others.eventually wear down.
We will see where it eventually is for him in year 2.

Never understood the hype over Johnson. The Cowboys are deep at WR now so making the team could be a challenge for Johnson.

I just don’t remember too much about his Pre- season.

Media and some fans were slobbering over him based on training camp reports and video clips.

I predicted that he would fade in the preseason games and he did.

Young players, especially fast young players can look terrific in training camp when veterans are conserving their energy was not going 110% on every snap.

J.Johnson did show an ability to get open which is a good start. He did show the ability to catch the ball when it was not contested or when the bright lights were not shining on him.

He'll have to avoid drops in the preseason to have a chance.

He has smallish hands (8-7/8"). Anything under 9" is consider small. Some player have had good careers with small hands but it's an extra obstacle to overcome.
