The chart you're dismissing is from 2002-2018 4th down plays. What dramatic changes have occurred offensively since 2018 that would render that data useless?

In 2019 teams made 25 attempts on 4th and 15. They failed on 19 of them. Again, where is this "high rate" going to come from?

As the game evolves offenses adjust. We’re seeing more and more 4000 yard passers and some 5000 yard passers. In 2019 most of those teams that tried those 4th and 15s were probably getting their butts handed to them. I believe the chances of converting a 4th and 15 are a lot better in a competitive one score game. A lot of it comes down to how you’re playing that day. If you’ve been moving the ball throughout the day and have a chance to win or tie a game your odds of converting a 4th and 15 are pretty good.

Do you know at what juncture in the game those attempts were made? Some could have been a Hail Mary right before the half or at the end of a game. It makes a big difference in the closing seconds of a one score game if you’re giving an opportunity at a 4th and 15 to potentially win a game. In some of those instances they probably weren’t even trying to pick up the 15 yards to continue the drive, they were going for broke. The odds are going to increase picking up those plays if a defense has been on the field too long. If the D has just given up a score and has to get right back on the field again to defend a 4th and 15 that can make a huge difference.

I like them adding an umpire to the booth. Should help the refs call a better game and get it right.

I remember last year when the Offensive PI challenge rule was announced and people freaked out because teams would just throw up Hail Marys and there's always PI.

Then the season actually started and nothing like that happened.

HELLL NO.....

I'll take the 4th and 15 play over another useless, boring onside kick all day long.

Some of you are spooked by our soft Cowboys giving up too many 3rd and longs in recent years. That's not the NFL norm, but it is one of the reasons we've gone nowhere. Hopefully our defense will get a little scarier this year now that soft Rod and beat-your-man Richard are gone.

I'm saying hell no not because of the Cowboys but because of the NFL. I'm all for things bettering the game. This does not better the game.

How much has it evolved since last year? :muttley:

The odds of converting 4th and 15 have never been "pretty good" and no magic is going to occur in 2020 to change that.

But onside kicks that have virtually no chance of succeeding because of the current no concussion rules are good for the game?

They're not. They've rendered the play boring and predictable. That's not bettering the game.

Ugh, that rule about defenseless punt returner or kick returner? How does that work with an onside kick? The ball is usually secured fractions of a second before contact.

Any rule that has the word "defenseless" in it needs to be redefined. It's too broad.

I do kind of like the 4th and 15 idea, but the purist in me thinks things are getting a bit hokey.

The 4th and 15s you listed weren’t after an offense just scored and most probably weren’t going to result in a game winning drive opportunity if converted. The proposal is these 4th and 15s will replace an onside kick. These will give a team an opportunity to maintain possession and win a game in the closing seconds. A 4th and 15 is a lot more doable when an offense has been moving the football and is coming off a score. It leaves a defense on the field having to defend another offensive play.

That's fine. I don't need onside kicks to succeed.

I like the ability for a defense to decline a penalty and start/stop the clock. That rule makes sense.

4th and 15 is interesting.

Lets say the Playoff game against the Packers where Zeke made drew us level with 2 minutes to go. Do you give the ball to Aaron Rodgers to drive the field or Dak in a 4th and 15 scenario?

onside kicks are suppose to be hard since you are trying to steal another possession. the last thing i want is to see a 5 yard defensive holding call lead to a loss of a possession and basically forcing the defense that already just got scored on be on the field.
