Yeah we had a few of those guys. Assuming use take 6 receivers at LEAST......there's 3 positions to fight for. All of them have a good shot at making it. Noah Browns and Cedric Wilson...this might be their last chance to impress especially with this new staff.

He tore up practice, and then evaporated when the lights came on.
Gallup and Cooper are both fast enough when it matters. We’ll have our share of big plays.

Smith is a backup player. He’s intriguing, but he’s going to have his hands full just making the team.
Can he return kicks?

You guys are up way late.

Go to bed.

Jon'Vea Johnson has always been one of pet cats or stealth cats, or whatever you call an under the radar player who might turn into something.

He has high end speed but was super raw last year, so he should be a different player next year after a year in the film room and weight room. The key thing about Johnson IMO is that he was at a small school (Toledo) and didn't even start in college because he was behind Diontae Johnson (who became a 3rd round pick). And he still had a 6th/7th round grade from Dane Brugler.

This is Brugler's writeup on him -

STRENGTHS: Accelerates in a blink, quickly finding his top speed…stacks cornerbacks and sustains his pace vertically to get behind the defense (his career 18.1 yards per catch ranks third best in school history)…quick feet to evade press and gain initial leverage…elusive with the ball in his hands, turning slants, screens or crossers into chunk plays…well-liked by his teammates and coaches…steady production the last three seasons despite a crowded wide receiver depth chart.

WEAKNESSES: Thin body type and lacks ideal muscle on his frame…lack of play strength stands out, struggling to match physical defenders…doesn’t have the balance or run power to break tackles…his patterns lack seasoning…needs to better vary his route speed and better shift his gears to fool coverage…doesn’t always play confident with his footwork, which affects his stem work…catches balls thrown to him but is inconsistent away from his frame or in traffic…doesn’t have return experience on special teams.

UMMARY: A part-time starter Toledo, Johnson was the backup “X” receiver in the Rockets’ offense behind Diontae Johnson, lining up across the formation. Despite coming off the bench most of his career, he found ways to impact games, leading the team with three 50-plus catches in 2018 and setting the school record with the longest play from scrimmage (98-yard catch). Johnson has the type of speed capable of creating consistent separation at the top of routes, which defenses must respect. However, there is a lot of feast or famine on this tape due to raw routes, footwork and technique. He also lacks experience on special teams. Overall, Johnson relies more on pure athleticism than nuance as a pass catcher, but his electric speed can create mismatches, projecting as a poor man’s version of Phillip Dorsett. GRADE: 6th-7th Round
I think CeeDee Lambs arrive ends their careers here now.

We are not doing the receiver by committee thing anymore.

Inasmuch as his ability to hang onto what's thrown to him is in doubt, that's possibly his best bet.

No doubt but what it takes a special player to be a KR. I can't help but wonder if that's his talent.

According to all reports, his speed isn't something in question. What's left is can he handle it . . .

I have no clue.

If this season happens..

I do not think we are done with this roster yet.

We still have way to many missing pieces at this point.

Any thoughts on this player?

He had a lot of hype in camp and I think the last staff really liked him but he couldn’t catch the ball in the preseason..

If I remember right he was playing with the first team at times wasn’t he?

The reason I bring him up is because he is someone that might help bring a speed element to the team.

I just don’t remember too much about his Pre- season.

I am sure that Jerry likes the name. Jon'Vea rolls off the tongue

Lucky to make the 53 IMO.

I think of the young guys, Wilson probably has the best chance but he can't stay healthy.

Cooper, Gallup, Lamb probably Smith and Wilson and then Brown as he's a good blocker and special teams guy.
And we might add Dez.

One of those players who sinks or swims when the lights come on...

Sad because he looked like he was coming to take someone’s job... then immediately face plants

Getting second chances are all good.

Happened once with an old GF. When the big lights came on and it was showtime..

I had a fail to launch. I was too drunk.

She also gave me a second chance and we ended up dating for 3 years.

Go figure.

You're lucky she went by the Landry rule.

He can’t catch the football. Fast guy. Looks the part. Still he can’t catch the football. There is / was a reason he wasn’t drafted. Cooper, Gallup, Lamb, and Smith are the top 4 guys. Wilson has a shot. I think McCarthy will end up bringing in a guy he likes. Johnson is at best a practice squad guy but why bother because he can’t play in the NFL.

@CATCH17 Drops kept him from making the team. If he learns how to catch and can play special teams he might make it with the Cowboys, or more likely a team hit hard at injuries.

Jerry Rice struggled with drops his first camp. He overcame it.

Miles Austin and Dwayne Harris were practice squad WRs for the Cowboys who went on to play in a Pro Bowl.

Yeah sure Johnson is the next Miles Austin. Why don’t you check out those rosters. Johnson has young, way more talented players in front of him.

Which has nothing to do with your original post of "why bother with a Practice Squad WR".

It doesn’t. In my opinion he has no chance to crack the roster. Where did I say no WRs on the on practice squad? I am all for wideouts that can play on the PR. It is going to be tough to crack this groups though.

Yeah he’s interesting.

I didn’t get the Miles Austin hype early on and then all of a sudden he was playing like the best WR in football for a couple of years.

This guy does a lot of things well. He just needs to catch the ball.
