This would be the ultimate offseason move for this team

Since our Cowboys last won a SB, there have been 24 other SB winners. Here’s a not so surprising fact about the owners of the last 24 SB winning teams:
  • Those owners all hired someone besides themselves to be the general manager.
The good news is, we certainly have had some good things to celebrate this offseason. Just look at the highlights of the last several months:
  • We finally got rid of an incapable HC.
  • We hired a bonafide NFL HC with skins on the wall.
  • We had an outstanding draft.
And that’s just to name a few good offseason outcomes.

But the best thing that could come out of this offseason is a fundamental truth about why we haven’t been able to return to the glory days of yesteryear. That truth is our owner has meddled and micromanaged his head coaches too much, while making himself the face of the franchise.

So here’s hoping the business genius that owns the Cowboys wakes up and realizes that he’s got the most financially valuable sports franchise in the world because he’s a great businessman. But he must also realize he hasn’t been to a Super Bowl in a quarter of a century because he micromanages and meddles way too much.

If at 78, Jerry can learn how to let his very qualified HC run the locker room, we actually have a much better chance of getting back to the playoff glory we all want.

That would be the best offseason move we have had in a very long time.

I keep thinking that at some point JJ will look in the mirror and realize that his ways of meddling are the biggest reason this team hasn’t returned to playoff glory. So many careers of great players have been wasted the last two decades plus. If he can’t see that he’s the biggest problem we’ve had, we will probably keep getting similar results.

Here’s to hoping...

OK, so Jerry...does not renew Garrett's contract, and hires MM as HC and allows him total control to hire his own staff.
Is this not what we would want from any GM if he were to bring one in?

They stay the course about not overpaying FA's and keep their own more so than lose them, not any that would be a difference maker anyway.
Is this not what we would want from any GM if he were to bring one in?

They ran the draft far better by JERRY sticking to the board as it was prepared for the team?
Is this not what we would want from any GM if he were to bring one in?

So what is the problem?

Many fans should talk less and pay attention more.

Stephen Jones is running the football operations. It's more than obvious to anyone that pays attention.
  • Jerry's only requirement at this point is that he maintains 1st dibs on camera and microphone time.
  • Jerry gets daily reports during training camp and during the season specifically for the purpose of being able to talk about players/coaches/etc. to the media.
  • They came up with the concept of making videos for the intro portion of the interviews with draft prospects.
    • That was done to give Jerry more camera time during the Covid Lockout.

  • Stephen Jones was already running the draft (Martin over Manziel).
  • Stephen Jones was already negotiating all contracts (DLaw's agent only talked to Jerry once and that was at a photo shoot).
  • Stephen Jones finally got complete control when he pushed his red-headed step brother out the door.

Jazzy, the thing that is clearly not overblown are the results we’ve had the last 24 seasons.

So everything is Jerry's fault. I mean ultimately it is.
However.
Coaching, lack of talent, after the triplets were gone / when they were aging. Many other oGM's from other teams suffer the same fate at some point.
So do those GM's meddles when things don't go so well?

Yes, it falls on the owners / GM, but they can't get it right all the time. This 24 years is crap. Did you expect them to lose all their best players and still compete for SB's. It takes time to rebuild.

Jazzy, the thing that is clearly not overblown are the results we’ve had the last 24 seasons.

The "meddling" took a drastic nosedive starting with Parcells being hired.

After Parcells Jerry was deep into building Jerry World and all the contracts that went along with that.
- Jerry World is not only the football stadium, it's a big business for other events.

After Jerry World, Jerry then built The Star which is also the center of significant business activity in the surrounding developments.
- The Star also involves multiple local High School teams that use it to play games.

All of those people that do business with Jerry World or The Star, want to meet with Jerry.
- That means the school Superintendent, the school Principles, Vice-Principles, etc as well as the city Mayor, city counsel, and others.
- With Jerry World it means everybody from champion boxers, their management and promoters, etc.
- Jerry even met with Bono from U2.

The final sign that Jerry was not going to the office everyday was probably when Jerry bought the yacht.
- He had already bought a helicopter to take visitors and himself back and forth between Jerry World and The Star.
- He didn't really need the copter if he was just going to Jerry World for 8 games per year.

You make some good points here X.

But it cannot be said that Jerry Jones “hasn’t meddled” in a while. We had video evidence of it multiple times from the 2017 NFL films documentary “All or Nothing”. We saw JJ literally overrule his coaches who wanted to discipline Zeke for loafing after an INT in the Denver loss. Jerry was on tape overruling that. He was also on tape holding up coaches meetings so he and Stephen could either be there in person or be there on a phone conference. That’s just off the top of my head.

In 2006 with TO being forced on Bill Parcells, 2015 with Greg Hardy being forced on Garrett...Not meddling? I can see the argument that perhaps SJ is doing more. But saying Jerry Jones doesn’t cross the line where it becomes micromanaging...I don’t see how that can be said.

Jerry might do something where he names a GM and Stephen is the EVP of football operations and he is the CEO and/or Chairman. Even with the name tags there is zero chance any major decision is made without Jerry and he still holds the right to do whatever he wants.

I will also say this about Stephen - he is a cheaper, less charming version of his Dad. That guy is as arrogant as the come so even if Jerry moves on it won’t matter.

Stephen comes across as a guy who inherited his wealth and position...I guess because it’s true.

In my opinion, Stephen is worse than his dad.

All or Nothing was staged with regards to Jerry. He does not attend meeting every week like the show implied.

It falls under the heading of my comment that Jerry maintains 1st dibs on camera and microphone time.

The RB coach could be seen being Zeke's buddy more than his boss. If somebody really wanted to discipline Zeke, it was not the RB coach.

I did not say NEVER with regards to post Parcells. Jerry loved the attention that TO brought to the team. Parcells didn't really reject the idea, he just didn't encourage it either.

Signing/drafting players is the job of the front office/GM and Garrett was only the Head Coach just like McCarthy was ONLY the Head Coach in Green Bay.

I also said that the final piece to Stephen Jones being in complete control of football operations was when he pushed Garrett out.
- I think we all know that Jerry would have just given Garrett a new contract if nobody else was involved in the decision.

There was extreme meddling by Jerry from 1994 (post Jimmy) up to 2003 when Parcells was hired. I wouldn't be shocked to find out Jerry was calling the plays during the Campo era.

Everything since Parcells has been fraction of what it was when Jerry established his reputation for "meddling".

FYI, signing Greg Hardy was a good move. Hardy was a good player on the field. That move would likely happen even with Stephen Jones or Will McClay in complete control. Again, Garrett was not the GM or assistant GM or in the personnel department.

Hardy was not a good move- on or off the field. After his initial splash, Hardy wasn’t worth his trouble.

Hardy started strong, recording two sacks of Tom Brady in his first game, three in his first two and then added a deflected interception in his third game, against the Seahawks. During that performance, off the field, in the locker room and on social media he was an embarrassing distraction. In his last 10 games, he had only three sacks. For the season he had six, finishing behind team leader DeMarcus Lawrence’s eight. In the season finale he needed two sacks to trigger a multi-million dollar bonus in his contract. But against a backup left tackle for the Commanders in a game that held no team significance, Hardy could produce only one measly tackle and no sacks.

Greg Hardy was clearly not a good signing.
