I was just wondering if it's the older fans who see what I see in Dak

I'm 53- almost 54 years old. I have been a fan of the Cowboys since the early 70's- when I was old enough to know about them.
I've seen the likes of Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Namath, Pat Haden, Danny White, Joe Montana, Brian Sipe, Dan Pastorini, Craig Morton, John Elway, Joe Theismann, Billy Kilmer, Ron Jaworski, Doug Williams, Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, and others like Brett Favre on their best and worst days.
It's not that Dak can't learn. He's a great athlete.
But I don't see in him the instincts of any of the quarterbacks I just mentioned in regards to leadership skills and making a team better.
I'm just curious if it's the older generation that sees what I see?
One thing Dak does better is that he doesn't throw many interceptions, but I am not sure if that comes from the fact that he strictly follows the route tree or is just more aware.
But he doesn't seem to have "it" when it comes to leadership.
But is it the older guys who see what I see?
Just curious.

I've seen every QB the Cowboys put behind center. Qak ain't up there in mental toughness or leadership. Wentz makes players around him better (we saw that last year last game when the Philly Cripple Crew defeated the Cowboys in a game that shouldn't have been close). And Qak relies on the playmakers to bail him out of the mud pit. This ain't college ball where you have loaded teams playing perennial losers. The QB has to have his head in the game and put out 100% effort as well.

Anybody who thinks different never learned from Tom Landry. When he an George Allen used to battle for the NFC East he made the comment, "You have to score more than 17 and hold your opponent to 17 or less to have a chance to win in this league."

You're in bad shape when you expect your kicker to bail you out and your playmakers to have big games every week. Sometimes the QB has to do something to help them out.

Oh and if passing yards is all you want from your QB, then you should want Winston. He led the league in passing yards and had 30 TDs. Yet there he is sitting on the bench behind Drew Brees.

I agree with you. Qak ain't the guy to lead the Cowboys.

I just can’t take anyone seriously who questions Dak’s leadership. His leadership may be his greatest strength.
He's a liar and not a cowboys fan.......... Cheese head thru and thru.

Dak has way Too many questionable or flat out bad games at crucial times . He has to be doubted . Going 1-6 last season against winning teams is a horrendous look .
Last 3 years He had way too many games with no TDs ( New England , eagles , saints etc ) and the zero points against the colts in 2018 . Losses to the jets and bears last season. . He has flows that cannnot be ignored .
Great QBs don’t have the above on their resumes .

I call total bs on this....been plenty of great QBs who've been shut out in multiple games early in their careers.

Dak's got some issues and we'll find out how many of those had more to do with Garrett than with Dak really soon. I suspect the same crap we saw for 10 years even with Romo had to do with Garrett more than Dak.

are u rooting for Dak or the Cowboys? since u are hating my point of view i see that a logical hate too so u could be labeled as a hater you should be above all of that ... you can disagree with someone but u have no right to see your point as the superior one
I root for the Cowboys. I see nothing new here with the Dak contract. He deserves a market value QB contract based on his performance and team production over 4 years not ONE... because we'll have one hit wonders lining up every year. If Dak fails then I'll give next deserving QB a fair shot and I won't use dumb opinions to characterize their leadership.

Your opinion is dumb because Dak having a party whilst Dak is technically not a Cowboy can in no logical way can be perceived as "bad leadership"

Just dumb

you don't have to use strong words to validate your point when debating someone let emotion out of it ...Dak is not an exceptional player to deserve that much money that is the point i believe in

Why can't I use "strong" words?:)

Anyway, I just think Characterizing Dak party as bad leadership is dump. If a fan did it to Haskins or Wentz in similar fashion I'd call it dumb. Dak teammates are grown men with families they don't take leadership ques from QB1 during Pandemics.

I agree Dak is not an exceptional player but on this planet where my words are considered fairly weak when expressing emotions, QBs are not paid based on being exceptional. They very good QBs like Dak always set the Market...
Mahomes will reset the market with impending TV money...

Since you admit there are questions about Dak , are you too sure we want to make him the highest paid player in the nfl ( or close to it )and get stuck with Dak , and mortgage the team’s 4-5 future years ? it is a big risk .
In addition , this is not a 2 year starter , this is a 4 year starter , and seems to be regressing . 1-6 against winning teams last year .
When it is a Maybe , you don’t pay 35-40 mil a year .

Looking at the stats for each of the 4 years Dak has been the QB, I don't see that at all.

Before you bring up W-L record, that is a TEAM stat not a QB stat. Dak can't be blamed for Garrett's faulty coaching (especially in regards to the kicking position), inconsistent defense and league worst special teams.

Pushing 60 hard. Comparing any QB that came after Staubach to Staubach is unfair on basically every level. Athletes were different then. Football was different then. And basically Staubach was literally born to QB Americas team. It was just a perfect fit on too many levels.

indirectly blaming Dak for team quitting....

"...... Does not excuse in any way the Dak "lead" team quitting with all their goals still in reach"....

I mean come on dude, why are you keep spinning trying to pigeon hole and blame him for not being able to lift an entire team, coaches, and a disasterous organization and blaming him for the loss, more specifically the eagles game and blaming the entire season on him..... if it walks like a duck, acts likes a duck, looks like a duck, sounds like a duck...well...you know the rest....

we have now gone from Dak sucks, because his stats are over blown, to he needs a ton of support to succeed, to he went 8-8, to his stats are over rated, to he has no leadership, to he didn't lift a team that quit on the coaches and organization to not sure what's next....

all of this because the contract negotiations is for $35M year and then all of a sudden the hate and anger towards him went over the top....if the contract negotiation was for 28M a year you would be here, singing his praises, talking up his leadership, how he was done wrong, the situation he was put in was impossible to over come, etc......

in fact many of the same dak detractors, were singing his praises last year (while I criticized him last summer and wanted to wait on a contract), given he was not making much money and not complaining and many of the same Dak detractors wanted him signed last summer and now, because of 3,4M extra in contract talks, he has become a villain to the dak detractors, including some calling him a scrub and not worthy of starting in this league behind any other current starting QB

and you here, trying to be oh so smart..."oh, no...show me a direct quote I said Dak quit this and Dak quit that...""

come on dude...grow up...grow some balls.....say what you mean and not dance around like a little kid trying not to get "trapped" and playing word games.
You got "Dak quit" ot of that? Talk about word games! Lol

What is the function of a leader? Among other things it is to get the team you're leading to willingly follow. My knock on Dak is that he failed as a leader to get the team to follow. He failed at job #1 of being a leader.

You can dance around that by fabricating the reasons why they quit but that does not change the fact that they quit.

This is basic, fundamental stuff here. Leadership 101.

Your take on this could be used as a case study in a Rationilization 101 class.

He couldn't even lead the Captains in a coin toss ritual without mass confusion. Yet another first in my time of watching and playing team sports.

You can educate someone on how to be a leader and they will be able to talk the talk. Without those innate qualities "born leaders" have they will never walk the walk. They will fool a lot of people on the periphery with the motivational mumbo jumbo but those in the trenches with them will quickly see through the facade.

Final words for the record. I never said, and don't believe that Dak quit. I don't hate Dak.

I do believe he is a good football player and a very average QB who had some strengths but also some glaring weaknesses which will be very difficult to overcome. He is highly overrated by many here and gets nowhere near the accolades anywhere else as he does here.

One thing is for certain. We will get to see (God willing and the creek don't rise) this play out over the next 4,5,6 years.

You have a good day and I'll see you in another thread somewhere, sometime.

You really can't read can you? This is just sad now.

The first sentence says I don't think he QUIT.

The second sentence questions his leadership.

Those are two distinctly different concepts.

You don't understand that? Wow! That explains a lot.

I saw this coming but I gave you the benefit of the doubt and didn't quit on you. Lol

Now is the time though so into the clown pile you go.

(p.s. it takes a heck of a lot more than some random, overly emotional manchild with self-esteem issues on a fan forum to anger me. Feel free to believe I'm angry if it helps you deal with those issues though )

I don't mind Dak as the QB but at a reasonable price so we can add more depth around him Now if we can also get a better quarterback why not we always should upgrade every position

all true and garrett was a horrible coach and had terrible assistants . Hope it was all garrett's fault . but i have seen elite QBs overcome bad coaching .

I'm 55 and I see it as you do. I see him as a good, but not elite, QB. He's no Staubach or Aikman. I don't even think he's as good as Danny White or Don Meredith. I see him as about as good as Mark Rypien. He's good, and it's possible to win with him WITH an extremely talented team around him.

Even by today’s standards, Dak doesn’t fit the mold.

I think I see what you are saying in one way or another.

Not so much his play on the field has overly bothered me.

It's how he is handling things like him practicing against orders to stay indoors and shelter in place.

Decisions like his 'small dinner party' that was written about..

His reaction about holding out of preseason team activities that the pandemic made moot..

this stuff challenges my sense of his leadership.

And when you add that to his repugnant contract demands that potentially could wound the team in a clearly rebuilding year?

That gives me real pause.

I really prefer to let Dak go and immediately adjust our sails.

I think half the Forum might agree, the other half will not and the other half do not care anymore.

Whatever.
