Maybe I'm slow but I hadn't thought of this as a possibility. The RDE I figured might play some OLB (or be replaced by our rookie, forget his name) but I didn't think the coaches would change Tank at all. I guess it makes more sense if you want to disguise who's rushing and who's in coverage.

He would be the LOlb in any odd front

Let's hope he's better at it than Greg Ellis, a good DE who looked like a fish out of water at LB.

But had his first and only double digit sack season and earned pro bowl under Wade as OLB.

I forget how often he had to drop back into a zone, but I doubt it was often...

Would love to have Ware involved with Cowboys new coaching staff in some capacity.

They aren't going to be a 3-4 defense. MM has already said the D will be a 4-3 base defense.

I've posted this a few times, but it all makes sense if you look at Nolan's defenses in the past. And, it also explains why were are in no hurry to get Everson Griffen or Clowney.

In our base, DLaw will play primarily as the WDE. At that spot, he may have his hand down, or he may be in a two-point stance. I don't think he will fall back in coverage very much, but he may now and then to confuse the QB. Keep in mind, that was the role he played at Boise. Crawford will be the SDE/5T, where his primary responsibility will be to keep the T occupied, so our SLB/DPR will only have to beat the TE on the outside. The SLB/DPR will likely be Smith, Gregory, or Anae.

In our nickel, DLaw will switch back to the SDE with the SLB/DPR becoming the traditional WDE, BUT - in Nolan's defense, in Nickel, sometimes both ends will be in a 3, sometimes they will be in a 2. Most of the time they will rush, but sometimes they will drop. And in Nolan's defenses, the WLB will be rushing the QB A LOT more than they did in Rod's basic 4-3, which is why Smith is moving to that spot.

It goes far beyond just simple 4/3, 3/4. We are moving into 21st-century hybrid defenses. We really have been playing a high school, 20th-century defense under Rod.

I’d be fine with it if their serious about wanting to be flexible and not run a consistent 34 defense...

Like others have said Greg Ellis did see sack up tick but man knowing he’d be dropping back in coverage (limited times I know but still today’s OC scheme for mismatches like this) seems like dlaw would be set up for failure

DLaw played Strong Side DE in Marinelli's scheme. They called LDE Strong Side regardless of the offensive alignment. It was strong side based on DE alignment and technique.

The LDE generally played tighter to the OT and the RDE generally played with a wider split.

In past Mike Nolan defenses there was a DE on one side that was similar to the DLaw position regardless of whether they played with 3 DL or 4 DL.

I doubt if DLaw plays many snaps as a LB.

Well said and very true.

I'm so looking forward to giving an opponent different looks on defense.

Mixing it up SLIGHTLY will be much more than 0-16 Rod could muster up.

It truly gets me worked up when I think about what could have possibly happened here over the last decade with a reasonably competent staff.

Jerry had to take his shot at winning with a puppet and man did he take his time giving it up. Not without tears also.

Around TGiving last year he finally realized what a moron he hired and continued to employ.

(Sorry for the mini off topic rant. It happens)

Not sure if true but I like it. The only thing I would prefer is if we get our 5 best on the field at the same time. Swap out Crawford so we get Gregory, Smith and Lawrence on the field.

My assumption is has less to do with 3-4 alignments and more to do with varying nickel and dime looks. Could be seeing some sub package looks with only 2 down lineman and 4 or 5 other guys on the line in a 2 point stance to disguise the pressure. My hope is it’s the latter and we’ll finally be seeing some disguised looks not only in coverage, but pressure too.

Not that I knew anything about Nolan but that's what I thought and why I was surprised that he reached out to Ware.
