So a 2nd round, 3rd round, 4th round, 5th round pick on defense isnt investing in the D? How about signing 2 free agent DT's & a safety? You cant fix every problem in 1 off-season.

No way you pass up on CeeDee Lamb.

as a matter of fact ... I bet if Dallas drafted Diggs with their 1st pick (if CeeDee wasnt there) nobody would have blinked an eye. I seen a lot of info that Diggs was a 1st round pick. Maybe some would have wanted Chaisson but it wouldnt have been a big deal
Dude. We have a new HC. Complete shift in philosophy. What's happened this year has been awesome.

Well the Adams slobberers will be out in force again.
I still say no way they should give a #1 for him. However, once Frederick is officially retired after June 1st they can clear cap room for him, if they did get a trade worked out and extend his contract. And if they were to be stupid and give away a #1 pick, they best have a contract worked out. Or else they give away a #1 for a 1 year player, that may or may not be THAT difference maker.

Guess I'm missing the part where people should be falling all over Adams, he's still a safety that isn't a ballhawk.

If we could get a good deal for him, ok fine, but otherwise just let the Jets be the Jets and suck as usual with anything to do with football.

Oh I love the pick.

It's more of indictment on how we've chosen to build the team since Parcells left. I'm fine spending 1st round picks on offense if you can get the defenders in free agency or through savvy trades, but we just haven't been able to do that.
i hear you. safety is a huge frustration for me. and a big 1t for years.

parcells was also converting from 4-3 to 3-4 so he had to go get guys like ware and (his first preference) spears burnett and canty. he made mistakes like bobby carpenter too.

his first 2 drafts with dallas weren't overwhelmingly def. he had newman and bradie james but also went for witten, al johnson, julius jones, and OL early.

oh I agree, I been saying this for a year, as he only has 3 picks in his career. The same ones that want to give up the farm for him are the same ones wanted Jones gone for that same reason, no picks.

Which is why I say no way trade a 1st, depending contract agreement but rather not.. I would be ok with a 2nd or a 3rd and a 5th. If he agrees to a new comtract. As he would be only a one year rental and wants a huge pay day.

I prefer just to go with who we have, take a S in round one next year. As that is the other thing these same fans say. Don’t pay Zeke or Dak and draft replacements to save cap space, but yet they are willing to give up the farm for Adams.

I think you miss read my comment. I was replying to the below from original post. Im saying they did address the defense

"but you absolutely have to invest in the defense too because that's what wins playoff games. Teams need some balance"

Complete agreement. He’s an athletic big hitter. Give me a safety with ball skills. No way I give up a 1 and definitely wouldn’t even think about making him highest paid. Again, like you, go with what we have and find in the draft next year.

This to me is a classic case of over hype based on name. What I saw of him playing, frankly, didn’t impress. Not on these levels.

Today's recap from the Whispers segment. I thought most of this was good info, though JJT mentioned during the show how hard it is to be a football insider right now when there aren't any damn minicamps.

To get us through to another week, here we go:

1. JJT decided to dig a little bit into this Jamal Adams drama, and he felt the need to report on this because the Cowboys tried to make a play for him at the deadline last season, and they've been linked heavily to him this year. If you all remember, the Jets wanted the whole farm for Adams, and offered up suggestions like two firsts, or a first and Zack Martin, and other crazy propsects, which is why the deal didn't materialize. Supposedly, the consternation surrounding the whole Adams drama is that the Jets just haven't been straight up with him and his patience is running out with them. They initially told Jamal he'd have an extension at the end of last season and it never happened. They then told him to wait until the start of the league year, and as we know, that hasn't happened either. Had the Jets done the noble thing and told him that they were going to wait until after year 3 to get a deal done, I think this situation would play out a little differently because Jamal would at least have some transparency. Now - the Jets have themselves into a dilemma where their leader on defense is more or less demanding a trade.

As JJT noted though, you can bet the house that Jamal Adams isn't going anywhere because the Jets have his rights for a few more years, and you can take it to the bank that they aren't getting rid of him unless they get exactly what they want for him.

2. DeMarcus Ware said that Tank Lawrence has been reaching out to him and inquiring about rushing the passer from a two point stance. We've heard all offseason that Dallas is playing a 4-3 defense, with "3-4 principles", but this definitely raised eyebrows. We were told in 2017 that we didn't draft a monster like TJ Watt because there was no tape of him rushing with his hand on the ground. To all of our dismay, we took Soft Taco Charlton. JJT alluded to a guy like Herschel Walker. Johnson County High School, I-Formation, could not be stopped. University of Georgia, I-Formation, couldn't be stopped. New Jersey Generals, I-Formation, couldn't be stopped. Dallas Cowboys, I-Formation, couldn't be stopped. Minnesota Vikings, split backfield, just a guy. Why are we even entertaining the idea of experimenting with arguably our best defender? JJT hopes that we can see Tank rushing standing up in practice before we ever unveil that on the field, because Tank has never done it before. It is easier on the body if you make these adjustments with aging pass rushers, but Tank is only 28.

JJT did note that Greg Ellis made the switch at age 31, and moaned and groaned and complained about it publicly and even more about it privately, saying the Cowboys were setting him up for failure. He had 52 sacks as a 4-3 DE, but what's interesting is that he had 25 sacks in 38 games and 6 forced fumbles after he switched to a 3-4 LB under the Parcells tutelage. He only had 5 seasons with 8 sacks or more, 2 of them were with Parcells in a 3-4. Additionally, his only Pro Bowl, where he amassed 12.5 sacks, was also with Parcells running a 3-4. So there is some evidence of success there historically.

3. Dived a little bit into analytics in this piece. Most of the top teams in the past decade have had, big time QB play. The Cowboys offense has been top 11 five times in the past 9 years, being top 10 in scoring 4 times. The defense has not nearly produced that type of consistency, being only top 10 3 times, and all of those were recently with Marinelli and Richard running a soft and predictable unit. I think it's backwards thinking, but this is why the Cowboys chose to draft a guy like CeeDee. They're fully vested in their offense, so they thought it was better to make their strength even stronger. As a team source put it, yeah that could've drafted a guy like Chaisson, but with the style of defense that the Cowboys want to play he would at best be a rotational guy for a few years. McCarthy likes to play 3 WRs and 1 RB, and CeeDee has the talent and ability to contribute immediately. So they wanted to fortify their offense rather than try and plug holes on defense.

That's all fine and dandy, and I like CeeDee and like the pick, but you absolutely have to invest in the defense too because that's what wins playoff games. Teams need some balance, and I hope that trotting out another "elite offense" in the 2020 playoffs (assuming we make it there) pays dividends. But we've been there before, and I'd really hate to see Aaron Rodgers send us packing again on a converted 3rd and 20 against soft coverage with a mediocre defense.

And that's all I got folks. Enjoy your weekend!

:starspin:
which D player would have had a better / more likely long term impact than CeeDee?

none. drafting for position is stupid when there is such a disparity in talent within reach.

The Packers sent us packing twice not because of an elite defense, but because their offense was a little better than ours. Both defenses were about equal, but Garrett-led offenses could only reach a very high level, just not elite because of problems with the philosophy/scheme.

Having a top-notch defense absolutely was needed under Garrett because of the shortcomings ... and we didn't have it. McCarthy may can produce an elite offense than can carry a so-so defense if necessary. Our hope, of course, is to have an elite offense and top-notch defense, because that combination is hard to beat.

2016 was a defensive disaster, man. We were down 21-3 before we even knew what hit us.

2014 should've been the year and had we been better coached that game would've been a gimme. I still say to this day if Murray doesn't fumble that ball, we play Seattle in the conference championship.

Again, I liked the CeeDee pick. And I'm paraphrasing a radio segment.

We are talking about the way our teams were built post Parcells and pre McCarthy.

Sure. I liked the Quinn trade especially when it happened, but I'm just not as fond of those "one year rental" trades. I really don't think we would've been desperate enough to get Quinn in the first place had we not missed so badly on Gregory and Taco. It's also worth noting that the trades you mention happened very recently. It's been a carousel of JAGs besides those two haha.
But that's how the entire league is, that's what I mean by guys have to be available.

It's not like other teams are turning mid- or late-round picks into Pro Bowlers every year.

JJT, you don't pass on top 5 talent at 16 for a rotation guy. Doesn't matter what position they play. He must have missed that the Cowboys drafted heavy for defense and addressed it big time in FA.

Not defending the defense, but part of the reason we were down 21-3 is because the Packers' offense hit us and ours did not hit them.

I look at a game like the Rams' playoff game. Los Angeles came out with a great/specific plan of attack for out defense. Our offense could not keep up with such attacks because Garrett believes the way to win is to execute what you do better than your opponent executes what they do. Executing is absolutely necessary, but so is creatively targeting opponents' weaknesses.

Read something on twitter just couple days ago where DeMarcus Ware referred to our D a the new " hybrid defense". Not sure what he meant but .....
I hope that 'hybrid' doesn't mean that it both sucks and blows

When the offense has a turnover then the defense needs to step up and get a stop, a turnover or hold to 3 points. Special teams didn't do any favors either. The defense can't give up 3 TDs on the first 3 possessions, period. With Garrett they struggled the first few possessions last year...... when the plays are scripted.

The GM is a follow the ball guy and as much about the entertainment aspect of the NFL as the game on the field. He was ecstatic that Lamb fell for two reasons. That's very good value pick but it's the kind of pick he wants to make in the 1st round. WR's are sexy picks. There wasn't a D player at the same level as Lamb so it was as easy a pick as he's ever made.

If they're going to go heavy on one side, I prefer it to be the offense. We can argue which D was the best, 85 Bears, 00 Ravens or 03 Bucs. What they all had in common was only one ring each.

A good D cannot always prevent a score but a good O will keep teams in the game. If one can score points, they're never out of it.

Thanks for the summary!

But JJT is wrong when crediting Parcells for Ellis' most successful season as OLB. Parcells last season was 2006.

Greg Ellis went to pro bowl in 2007 under Wade Phillips.

While both Parcells and Wade favored 3-4 fronts, their systems were night and day.

Parcells used the traditional 2 gap 3-4 while Wade created the more revolutionary 1 gap 3-4.

1 gap allows the front 7 to rush passer first, then run. The 2 gap system required front 7 to play the run first.

Ellis hated Parcells' 3-4, not Wade's.

No offense but I know more about Hebron High's Jamal Adams situation than JJT has stated here.

Jamal's agent team is driven by his Dad who was a former RB under Bill Parcells with the Giants.
His family is from a very upper middle class area near The Star.
The family has wanted Jamal close to home (constantly flirting with the Cowboys through known friends and ex-players in the area)... and Jamal wants to be the highest paid safety in the league.
He's not giving discounts but he'd love to be home and in a no income tax state.

The Jets see him as a young All Pro so want the world for him for sure but are also tired of his vocal social media outbursts and demands to be signed or traded.
He's removed the Jets from his social media at least twice.

The pressure is building to either sign the man or trade him.

Dallas was always at one pick for him much like they did with Amari. Trade a 1 then pay him the freight.

The deal becomes more possible now that Jets are down to a 1 and 3. Dallas isn't doing that but probably would do a 1 and 5 given all the comp picks they stacked next year.
If they get close they'll need to talk numbers with Adams team. They almost certainly aren't going to knock all other safeties numbers out of the park but realize he is All-Pro and will to the pile in salary.

If Adams camp really wants him to play in Dallas that badly, they should be willing to give the Cowboys some measure of concessions on his contract extension. Compromises are how deals get done. And if the player isn't willing to make any, he won't get what he wants either. He can't expect to have it all.
