we'll see, they definitely didn't help the middle of the Panther's defense. both are on downsides of their careers.

LoL. McCoy and Poe represent a quantum leap from the JAGs Dallas has been trotting out at DT for the last 5 plus years. I agree with coach.

I am 5 deep in beers now but I must say I am super pumped for this season.

we'll see 3 years ago you're right, in Carolina last season not so much.

It feels like forever ago, given the coronavirus’ global stranglehold, but the Dallas Cowboys quietly landed two stud interior defensive linemen in Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe — eight Pro Bowls and nearly 650 pounds between them.

Together, with the incumbents from the 2019 squad, they form a close-to-impenetrable wall in the middle of Dallas’ front seven. That, on rushing downs.

On passing downs, the duo — especially McCoy, he of 59.5 career sacks — can also get after the quarterback, boosting a unit that notched just 39 takedowns in 2019, among the bottom half of the NFL. This number is dramatically underwhelming when you consider Robert Quinn alone accounted for 11.5 sacks.
Needless to say, if the Cowboys’ offseason resembled a makeover, these two are an excellent foundation.

“They’re two damn good veteran football players,” head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters Wednesday, via The Athletic. “They definitely fit what we’re trying to do up front, inside. Our outlook on how you play defense is you still got to stop the run. Then you have two big guys that can pass rush too.”

The Cowboys and McCoy agreed to three-year, $20 million contract at the onset of free agency. He brings a decade of starting experience and a resume highlighted by three first-team All-Pro selections, all of which with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Oklahoma native dubbed it a “dream come true” joining the club he grew up idolizing.

The No. 3 overall pick of the 2010 draft, McCoy went one-and-done with the Carolina Panthers last season. He registered 37 tackles, five sacks, and two pass breakups across 16 starts, proving he’s still a highly capable interior disruptor.

Albeit, a square peg forced into a round hole.

“I have never rotated as much as I did last year in Carolina,” McCoy said in March, per The Athletic. “That’s not what I was used to. I can play all game if I have to. … I’m an every down guy. That hasn’t changed, and I don’t plan on it changing this year.”

I am ever hopeful when guys like this get signed.

Unfortunately both of these guys are past their primes and are probably not for long with us.

When I see their guarantee money I look at what on average their annual deal is and divide the guarantee money by that money to see how long the team is feeling they will play at a level that is worth their money being paid.

After those years and the guaranteed money is accounted for..the rest of the deal is voidable by release or trade.

So if Poe for example gets 3 years for $20 mil with $8 mil guaranteed you divide the $8 mil by 3 and you get say roughly $2.5 mil /yr and that is basically what Dallas has invested in the deal.

If he remains all 3 years he gets the $20mil but in reality the last year of such deals often do not happen. So $6 mil is voided and a portion is charged off the cap often over 2 years.

It is sort of the way it seems to work. More or less.

Some of you have a more deep understanding of how it works but for me, this is easy to quickly see the low and high of a deal.

So it leads me to believe one of these guys are gone in about 2 years if not both of them.

So we need to get some young talent in the pipeline soon or we will be looking again for short term help.

Love the signings, but it may take a while to get over not having a defense that's soft in the middle on purpose.

Like a baseball team saying....let's not care about defense at catcher, shortstop or centerfield.

Leighton. Jaylon, and Lee will be so much better if these big dudes can keep the damn Guards off them. People don’t even understand how important second level blocking is.

Remember a few years ago when Stephen Jones was stuck on bottom feeders???? He also refused to consider any 30+ players. This is why IMO, he's just as responsible for past failers as Garrett.
He has a pretty good point about not signing older players. There are a few that are worth short deals, but they are the exception.

Did people already forget that the Panthers had the worst run defense in the league last year, and they gave up over 5 ypc right up the middle?
https://www.sharpfootballstats.com/directional-rushing-production--def-.html

Can we not act like they are difference-makers b/c they're heavier (which, they're not) than the starters we had last year?

Carolina was putrid against the run last year. Mccoy played all 16 and Poe played in 10. I wonder what the stats looked like when Poe played. Does Poe missing 6 games make the Panthers go from respectable to a league worst?

I want to believe so but I am concerned that the two may not be what we all have been hoping for in the middle of this defense. Was it scheme, or missing Poe for part of the season?

Make it THREE damn good football players and sign Jadaveon Clowney too.

Strong vs. run and is playmaker vs. pass. Clowney is also scheme versatile so he can play with hand down or up in Nolan's new hybrid system.

Then trade for Jamal Adams, Cowboys would have instant top 10 defense, no water needed.
Clowney and Adams are both looking for monster contracts, and the Cowboys have to be able to manage the salary cap.

I'm not necessarily inclined to judge McCoy and Poe based upon what Carolina's run defense was last year. There were many more problems within the Panthers' defense than those two will ever be. Their team's overall defense was a hot mess and that includes the entire team. McCoy and Poe will get a chance to prove themselves worthy of more credit than they got with Carolina. Both have a golden opportunity to boost their image.

We'll see what happens with respect to our run defense in the year to come. I suspect the Cowboys will continue to get young DTs like we did with Neville Gallimore in the 2020 draft. This year's defensive changes were merely the first infusion of bigger and better defensive tackles. The upcoming seasons are sure to see more of these types of changes that should continue. They'll surely reflect a better philosophical approach.

Those two players not only hold the key to this defense but to the season as well. The middle of the DL has been the spot spot for too long and that's where is all begins, not on the edge or in the secondary.

Landry's key to his Flex was that interior DL freeing up his MLB to lead the team in tackles and keep large bodies off him. Johnson's D was dependent on that so much that he spent the #1 overall pick on a DT.

These two players alnog with Gregory and Smith could be the difference between just a season and something really special.

Waive Crawford, sign Dak, trade OT Tyron Smith for OG Quentin Nelson.

Yeah..

I agree.

The old adage applies.

If the other team no longer wanted them?

You have to ask why?

I definitely see them as short term answers.

It's better than what we had.

Our site has too much hyperbole and not enough reality for me at times.

Just my 2 cents.

Carolina's run D was horrid. We've been burnt a lot by our flowery expectations. I for one am saying "Show me " before I say Poe and McCoy will make such huge difference. If people here want to believe these two Dt's will be the reason our run D and overall defense may become so great,( without them stepping on the field yet) then they TOO must share blame for the Panthers run defense!!

I am REALLY hopeful they add what's been missing. Especially Poe's size in there. But for now,....cautiously optimistic.
