Did people already forget that the Panthers had the worst run defense in the league last year, and they gave up over 5 ypc right up the middle?
https://www.sharpfootballstats.com/directional-rushing-production--def-.html

Can we not act like they are difference-makers b/c they're heavier (which, they're not) than the starters we had last year?

Poe missed the last 5 or so games at the end of the season. Run defense with Poe was something like 50 yards better per game than without him. There was a thread earlier in the year where I checked up on it.

we'll see, they definitely didn't help the middle of the Panther's defense. both are on downsides of their careers.
That's how you have to address a position that was ignored, ignorantly, for over a decade with failed attempts and wasted draft picks.
McCarthy isn't responsible for those failed attempts and wasted draft picks.
Sure sign of a smart man, is instant stop gap measures employed,, that's what MM initiated and deployed immediately because he had to cover a decade of ignorance in his inaugural presentation of what his starting DL will look like.
Poe and McCoy are not a long term solution, that is so very short sighted by those that oppose and degrade the signing of these two.
Poe and McCoy were about plugging a massive hole left over from a very ignorant past regime.. morons.

Waive Crawford, sign Dak, trade OT Tyron Smith for OG Quentin Nelson.

Cawford's contract won't make up much of the difference, and why would Indy trade a 24 year old guy only 2 years into his rookie contact and who has made All Pro his first two seasons for a 30 year old with a big contract and back problems that haven't allowed him to play all 16 games since 2015? Plus, it would leave the Cowboys with a hole at OT

Make it THREE damn good football players and sign Jadaveon Clowney too.

Strong vs. run and is playmaker vs. pass. Clowney is also scheme versatile so he can play with hand down or up in Nolan's new hybrid system.

Then trade for Jamal Adams, Cowboys would have instant top 10 defense, no water needed.
Give me Griffen (Clowney will cost far more than we can afford or what he will be worth) and Jamal Adams...and Dez. Then we're ready to roll!

we'll see 3 years ago you're right, in Carolina last season not so much.
there has to be quality around or even better players look average. You can pin the defense ranking on two players as it takes 11.

It's hard for me to talk as if we are going to have this amazingly improved defense in 2020 when we may not even have a season at all. The events of the past several days have planted too many doubts in my head about too many things. :(

Those two players not only hold the key to this defense but to the season as well. The middle of the DL has been the spot spot for too long and that's where is all begins, not on the edge or in the secondary.

Landry's key to his Flex was that interior DL freeing up his MLB to lead the team in tackles and keep large bodies off him. Johnson's D was dependent on that so much that he spent the #1 overall pick on a DT.

These two players alnog with Gregory and Smith could be the difference between just a season and something really special.
I think they have enough in the tank to clog this middle and make a push up the middle. Maybe not as good as when they were in there primes but still good enough to be a big improvement. For years we have been missing this. And like safety position our FO and or HC just didn’t care or allowed Marinelli run his style. Now we are getting some monsters. Our LBs will look better. And our secondary will look better. Maybe produce more turnovers.

I withhold judgement until I see the final product perform during the regular season. Agreed, the potential is there but let's see how much of that potential is realized.

Then trade Tank and Jourdan to Indy for Malik Hooker and Q Nelson.

Cut Crawford.

Trade 1st, Hill and 5th for Jamal Adams.

Sign Dak.

Extend Zach.

Trade 3rd and X Woods for Haason Reddick.

Sign Clowney to 2 year, 12M base with incentives to 20M.

What would the outcome of that playoff game against the Rams have been if you had Poe and McCoy in the interior of that line that night? You think CJ Anderson shreds them up the middle?

lol, that's a whole lot of moving parts. I suspect trades and contracts aren't as easy as they may seem to a fan.

I am ever hopeful when guys like this get signed.
Unfortunately both of these guys are past their primes and are probably not for long with us..........

So we need to get some young talent in the pipeline soon or we will be looking again for short term help.

Good points Redball, however we do have 1 guy in that pipeline that could very well replace 1 of those positions......Neville Gallimore, DT out of Oklahoma. We took him in the 3rd round, 6'2" 302 lbs. He's gonna be good.

Poe and McCoy will be judged this year according to what they do to improve the C'boys Defense. While it's very true that our former DTs were proven inadequate, it served as proof of what our bumbling FO allowed to exist for way too long. Hopefully, McCoy and Poe will perform in a manner that betters this team. I'm definitely hopeful it'll be an upgrade from what we've had lately. Neville Gallimore should provide excellent backup duty and more to come, assuming he lives up to his reputation as a rookie DT with promising talent.

Carolina's run D was horrid. We've been burnt a lot by our flowery expectations. I for one am saying "Show me " before I say Poe and McCoy will make such huge difference. If people here want to believe these two Dt's will be the reason our run D and overall defense may become so great,( without them stepping on the field yet) then they TOO must share blame for the Panthers run defense!!

I am REALLY hopeful they add what's been missing. Especially Poe's size in there. But for now,....cautiously optimistic.
Add Aldon Smith and Randy Gregory to your comment.

Thank goodness we drafted a possible answer at DT, too.

That whole DL is really just a lick and a promise until we know more.

People will want to believe we have been improving things which is natural.

If we could be as good building our OL with the DL..

it would add at least 3 more wins.

No joke.
