Mine was a 1989 Nissan Hardbody truck. I was 17 when I got it in 1997. The customizing movement during the 90s was minitrucks. They were everywhere and everybody was in a club. I was infatuated with it through my late teens before I eventually fell out of it for cars. They were fun times and you don't see them, really, at all anymore. Pretty much a dead sport now. Back then though it was the thing. I had altered suspension with air shocks to lower it, a "C-Notch in the back frame so the rear axle wouldn't hit the frame, shaved the door handles, updated the nose, and had a bed box with 2 10" subs in it. Looking back, the truck was really a pile and it was silly, but, at the time I was just a kid and I thought it was the coolest thing on the planet. Funny how you grow up and out of things. I'm thankful for the experience though because it kept my head looking forward at something to work hard for, because I was passionate about it, and kept me from the wrong crowds and drugs.

Anyway, that was my first ride. What was yours?

Have not thought about that in awhile.

I had a 1973 Camero SS 396.

Metallic dark blue, black dual racing strps from hood, roof to rear deck.

Factory mags and Delco 8 track radio. I later put on headers which were blue printed to the manifold. That meant the manifold and header where the manifold gasket were are grind down to form a high compression seal.

After that, I added a full racing cam and changed the rear end gears for faster 0-60 mph instead of a high end cruising speed.

My best buddy had a 442 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible and we would go racing in city streets and race other guys all the time.

I traded my Camero in on a Datsun 260 Z and put headers and and a Hurst shifter for the 5 speed tranny.

It too was a screamer until one night on a rainy night I turned into what I thought was a shallow runoff and it turned into 3' deep flood.

My car stalled as the water started coming over my hood. I got it fired and backed out of the water and heard a bang.

I limped home in the rain as it would not get up to speed.

Got home, waited for the rain to stop and took a flashlight underneath and saw a hole the size of a beer can in my engine bottom.

The water had blocked the tailpipe and when I restarted the engine, the back pressure had forced a piston rod back thru the block and shot it out of the engine.

I was just freaking sick about it. I had bought the car with a warranted on it extra before I did the mechanical upgrade. I turned the car back to the dealer and they asked me if I had done any work on the car.

I said no, I had bought it from them like that. The dealer rep said they were going to total the car. They said I could go pick out a new 280 Z of the lot as a swap out.

I went in the showroom and found a white with black leather interior 280Z and drove it off the showroom.

I was totally pleased and counted my lucky Irish stars.

Mine looked identical to this but had a 350 and Formula1 Super Stocks on the back with air shocks jacked up so high the headlights were good for about 50 feet, lol. Bought it from my older brother for $1,000.00 when I turned 16 in '79. I don't remember what all he'd done to it but she was fast.

Factory white 1972 two door Nova. Straight 6, 3 on the tree, navy blue interior.
I regretted selling it the day it was hauled away. New owner put a 383 ci stroker motor in it and detailed the interior with Dallas Cowboy accessories !!!

LOL back in the 80s all sports cars had speedometers that capped out at 85. But the Volkswagon Jetta went up to 140mph. Even Corvettes, 85. The speedometer has no relation to how fast a car can go. None what so ever. In my Grand National I knew when I went 127 MPH because the fuel line simply cut off at that point. They did this because they did not want to encourage speeding.

I can't recall what year it was, but my mother had a Ford Maverick. I remember when she was going to buy it. The speedometer went to 120mph. That's all I needed to see, she had my vote to get it rofl. I didn't care that it was ugly, it went over 100mph! For a young kid, that was THE BAR. hah

Of course, that got followed up by a Ford Escort. Of course, I was very disappointed when she bought that rofl.

75 Monte......oh, the memories.

I have so many memories of many different Monte Carlos. I remember my best friend (he still is today some 30+ years later) his mother had one and the passenger door wouldn't stay closed rofl. There was a rope tied to the door so when she turned left, she could hold it so the door didn't swing open rofl. That door was damn heavy too! hah

No fooling about the door. The thing was about 6' long.

I can attest to the speedometer having no relation to the how fast a car can go. My first car was a white 84 Renault alliance me and a friend decided to drive to NYC from DC for a Sunday brunch... After hanging out in the city all day and night I had to get back to DVD before my 8am class for an exam. I wouldn't have made it going the speed limit so I pushed as much ad I could. About 50 miles from DC, I pushed the speedometer past 85 mph all the way back around to about 10-15 mph until the speedometer popped. I know I was going well over 115 mph. Given the proportionate distance from 85 to 15.

The 1987 GNX is one of my favorite cars growing up. They were known as the pink slip thief for a while because they surprised the hell out of unsuspecting street draggers. People didn't realize how quickly that unassuming muscle car's V6 could accelerate in the 1/4 mile.
You know speaking of drag races. Does anyone remember the illegal drag races that used to happen behind Miller Brewery in South Fort Worth?

Hah, that's where I first learn to drive a stick.

No, but we had illegal drag races near a Kroger distribution warehouse NE of Forth Worth. The road was sooo smooth.

The car was so small. I had to push the seat back no leg room behind me.
I seem to recall some huge guy (movie star I think, Andre the Giant or maybe it was Richard Kiel) where they took the driver side seat out of I believe an old Civic and the guy sat in the back seat to drive rofl.

That's similar to Miller Brewery. The road was Will Rodgers Boulevard. It was actually two roads side by side where each direction was it's own road and they were pretty wide which made it great for drag racing.

93 eagle summit, only car my parents bought for me. Was in Ohio at the time, the car heater didnt work, glass shot out of the vents, engine leaked oil, transmission would buck from park to drive, not to mention the brakes would lock under any light pressure when it's freezing (which is always in OH)

After a year and a half coming home late from work I look back and couldn't see the road behind me...smoke was covering all 4 lanes. At this point the engine would bog if I gave it gas so i coasted as far as I could then parked it on the backside of a normally empty parking lot. Went to call my dad to pick me up and all I saw was an orange glow from underneath as I opened the door...the catalytic converter was on fire. It went out after a few minutes and we removed the plate and anything inside.

Went car shopping the next day, ended up with a 2000 civic ex coupe (5 speed, forest pearl green) and after 2 days the summit was gone, no idea if it was towed or where to.

Buying this honda had led me down a path of learning many things about owning and working on a car (from learning how to change my own oil to rebuilding transmissions and other engine work). Also learned how to drive a stick and my two cars since have all been stick. Who knows what car I'd be driving now if it wasn't for that trash breaking down.
