Does Anae have the chance to be our TJ Watt?

I love his motor.
I am not sure if he is as athletic as Watt. Watt was a perfect fit for a 3-4 OLB......and went to the right team, with the right scheme, with the right mind set on defense......Anae will probably be a rotation guy who may have some big moments in the 4th quarter, because of his motor alone and that's what you want players to step up is in the 4th quarter.

I hate trying to compare a rookie who has not set foot on the NFL stage to that of a vet player. I think Anae bring some abilities to the table that gives him a chance to make it in the NFL how it plays out will fall to Anae and the coaching staff.

Chance? I guess, sure. A good chance? Likely not.

Next question.

Good post, I fully agree.

Watt cant jump off a cliff the way Anae can though!

We’ll see.

I’m just glad the coaching staff that passed on no brainer picks like Watt is gone.

While I wanted TJ Watt very much with that pick at the time and absolutely hated the Taco pick it wasn't such a no brainer pick at all...it had tons of risk to it especially with his multiple knee surgeries before even entering the league, at the time people were saying he may not play more than a few years. He's was also a question mark about playing as a 4-3 end.

It's really easy to sit here now after the fact and talk about how he was a no brainer pick but he wasn't at the time.

I had to re-read I thought he said JJ Watt and I almost feel over.
TJ has been pretty good but TBH, he hasn't really been like his brother or anything like that yet so yeah he has a chance. The kid is good and will get better in that locker room. Time will tell how good he gets.

Sorry, whut?

I think Jared Allen would be a better comparison. Watt is physically superior to Anae. Allen was taken in the fourth round of the 2004 draft because while he had 17.5 sacks as a senior, he ran a 4.72 40 and only did 13 reps in the bench press. (Their 10-yard splits are practically the same.) He had to overcome his shortcomings, too.

I think there are some similarities with Takk McKinley. Both are probably too stiff to be a 7 gap rusher, but both explode well of the snap and can get pressure in 8 or 9 gaps. Both are high effort guys. Like McKinley, I could see Anae being much more effective as a role player than as a starter

And the good thing is Anae will be able to grow from that role instead of being forced to start and going through the normal growing pains of a rookie starter. I think he is going to do well and was more of a 3rd round pick but its nuts to compare him to Watt at this point.

Ask me in November. 179th pick. Odds aren't high, but it happens.

What medicals are they talking about that caused him to fall in the draft? I hadn't heard about that.
I'm wondering if Nagy meant "physicals" instead of "medicals" (although he does also include "injury" )in that Tweet. I thought all the 1st round talk right after the Senior Bowl was crazy, and there seemed to be a lot of disappointment with his "explosion" numbers at the Combine.

I can't find anything unless he hurt himself just prior or during the Combine.

In college, he started 14 of 14 games a a Senior, 14 of 14 as Junior, 10 of 13 as a Sophomore, and played 6 games as Freshman, which would be typical progression over a 4-year collegiate career.

Jim is pretty thorough so my guess is there was some sort on injury that occurred after the Senior Bowl and before/during the Combine. I just read 5 or 6 articles and they mainly focused on the disappointing 40 time.

I still like him as a designated Edge guy who will win with power and hustle. I look at him like a Trent Cole(6-3/270) or Elvis Dumervil (5-11/250). Neither looked like traditional Edge guys, but had an excellent combination of power, speed, and determination.

TJ Watt was drafted in the first round and Anae was drafted in the 5th round. Some fans are still having trouble dealing with the fact that we took Taco over Watt.

Watt is not superior at all maybe slightly bigger , but Anae is faster in short area and has a higher motor.

Watt, at 6-4, 252, ran a 4.69 40, 6.79 three-cone, 4.13 20-yard shuttle and vertical jumped 37 inches.

Anae at 6-3, 257, ran a 4.91 40, 7.44 three-cone, 4.43 20-yard shuttle and vertical jumped 31 inches.

Those numbers are the difference between first round and third day in the draft.

Anae has the measurables of a 300 lb lineman.
