For the players, this is working out great. No OTA's, No meetings, No nothing.. then when it does start, only a couple of preseason games.
If that and the odds are against them even having to play a full season and I've yet to see anything from the NFLPA about compensation for an abbreviated season.

I also wonder how the different states' rules regarding crowds will affect it. Coachella was cancelled today because of the state ruling, won't happen this year. I haven't heard anything yet about ACL in Austin in September.

If they're cancelling outdoor events, how many people are they going to allow into an enclosed stadium?

My biggest gripe about the preseason games are the tv interviews that take place during the game. If the game is so boring, then why broadcast it at all?
Because they've got little else to broadcast, the July sweeps are over and the next one is not until November.

My biggest gripe isn't the interviews, it's the people doing the interviewing. Audio torture is listening to Bill Jones, Laufenberg and Spagnola do the game but at least they got rid of that lipless chick that used to do the pregame. Can't believe I just wrote that, pregame of a pretend game? That's like putting on a condom just to sleep.

With no offseason in pads and only two preseason games teams are going to have to play starters in both those games for them to have any chance to be ready to start the season. It’s going to be a sticky situation especially if training camp isn’t normal. Players aren’t going to be in good shape and there’s likely to be a number of injuries especially soft tissue.

Funny . Lipless is not all she’s missing.

Preseason works cause football fans are desperate enough to tune in or attend. I always gave my tickets away. Too frikin hot anyway.

no matter how many games you have for a preseason there will still be a "last game"
I think he's saying that with a shorter preseason that last game wouldn't mostly be played with bottom level players designed to keep starters healthy.

Wasn't much better come September but we went to one preseason game when I had tickets and my wife said "I am leaving" after the Q1 and if I wanted to get home, I better go with her.

The next year, I couldn't even give them away and she wouldn't go to day games until the weather wasn't hell during a heatwave. I finally just gave up and it was the late 80s so on radio stations first prize was 2 tickets, 2nd prize was 4 tickets.

Just start the regular NFL season in August, make those 4 extra games count for a 20 game season.

He could lose enough money to fill his own boat and it won’t make a dent in his bank account.
Right. Best thing we can hope for is Jerry not wearing a mask in the crowd. Hope that doesn’t come off wrong.

I honestly dont see a season happening at all. All it will take is 4 or 5 guys to test for CoVid and it's a wrap.

2020 is the biggest turd year of my lifetime. Not even going to waste more energy even trying to hope for the best.

Here's an idea, cancel the preseason and expand the rosters, game day rosters and practice squads. Bring preseason back in 2021 but keep the expanded rosters in place to absorb some of the expanding cap and stop the more pay to the same number of players and employ more players, spread the wealth.

They could set up a Cap Exemption for players selected so to cover them for this season. Set it up where they can't hide 1st or 2nd stringers as Cap Exemptions.

This would also give teams a cache of players to pull from should the need arise with positive diagnoses.

Also fewer "bubble players" to make decisions on in the 4Q of the last preseason game, where fortunes are made or lost.
That is a real good idea, send that to goodell.
Especially for this season.
And since no preseason, give the owners 1 or 2 extra games for this season. 17 or 18 games that do count.

why not? whatever thinking goes into the decision to rest starters on the final exhibition game could apply if there are 2 or 3 or 4 games.

Didn't they just do all that?

How is that different from college? They don't need pretend games and they come out of the gate
, most of the time, looking better than the NFL teams. And they don't have the patsy schedules to start the season as they once did. That first game might cost a team a shot at the CFP.

If they actually used those as tune ups to hit the ground running, as they did back in the day which is why Landry had such an impressive opening day record, I wouldn't feel the way I do but they don't. Tell me it looks like they've played any meaningful football opening weekend of the NFL. It's sloppy, few are in full game shape and back when they only played 14 or 12 of these, every game was critical. Go 0-1 and you were on alert. Now, naaah.

The first starter that goes down, all of the HC's lose their pucker and go into protect mode

because that owner that makes so much on that game while paying the help next to nothing will have a poor memory come time to talk contracts or retention after the season. And players have been shafted with injury settlements when their season ended before it started too many times.

What you mean they cone straight out the gate??? The first few weeks of college season is top 25 team playing against scrub teams they beat by 40-50;points a game. That is their preaseon.

That’s true for most of the top teams. Occasionally they schedulea tough non conference opponent but not the rule

It also could be that the team feels they need to get starters some actual action to shake off the rust before the regular season, and they can't do that if resting starter everyone that last game. That game action might be especially important for players adjusting to a new head coach and whatever changes that might entail.
