you are close to the truth...

you know Mike wanted Moore fired. But Jerry still runs the team.

jerry loves Moore. The kid has a bright future with the team.

btw, they fired Colombo so Mike would have Philbin on board. They are big buddies.
That's what I don't get. How can we ever say that any Cowboy HC since Bill Parcells was given a fair chance to be successful when Jerry has the final say in assistant coaches. If that assistant coach does a poor job then that shouldn't be on the HC, it's on Jerry'

if it is on Jerry then any declaration of accountability is an absolute joke.

when you think about it, some things have not changed.

jerry is still the GM.

HC still can’t call the plays on game day.

we have another BBDB DC.

our Assisant HC isn’t even a coach.

we blew up the OL scheme bc Mike wanted his old buddy. Probably forced Jerry into firing Colombo, who is an excellent coach.

It’s weird

yeh, Alexander is such a good OLine coach that no other NFL team wanted him in their organization and
the guy is now coaching an " consulant " overseas with a foreign pro football team
.

I think in most NFL circles he is considered pretty good. I think he is scouting and working with college O-linemen. I know he was working at the senior bowl heard him on the radio. Had some pretty good O-lines in Cincinnati. Man coached for 36 years you dont hang around that long if you suck.

but if you don't come to grip with the times and "adapt or die " , then that also lowers your stock around the NFL circles, and dims your future that much more from a league that ever so demands sudden productivity, or else..
Its a reason why many once heralded assistant coaches and coordinators.

Heck Dave Campo has been around the NFL circles as well and made several stops and roles in the NFL
But is he in the NFL now ?... is he in NFL team demand for his services ?
No, he is in the 'consulant " business, just like Alexander is. but with all his vast coaching experience.

and BTW, i think you are forgetting the ever primary reason why this 36 years of experience was abruptly fired
in the middle of the regular season - from which you just dont' hear a OL coach dismissal in mid-season
He Sucked !! .... LOL :muttley:

Where does the idea of Jerry having 'final say in assistant coaches' come from?

Did McCarthy want Kellen Moore as his offensive coordinator? I find that very difficult to beleive. I realize what was said to the media. I have to say it really sounded like one of those "you are going to show unity" type comments by the HC:

“I get to start over and take all those ‘never again’ statements back. I think when you just look at the big picture, all these decisions I’m making, particularly early in my tenure, I’ve had a lot of time to think about it.”

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...says-oc-kellen-moore-will-call-plays-in-2020/

Jones was reportedly adamant about retaining Moore, who previously spent three seasons with the team as a backup QB, and reportedly preferred Garrett surrender his own play-calling duties during his stint....

https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/nfl/dallas-cowboys/article239678598.html

Owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones see a bright future in Moore and exactly how McCarthy came to feel the same way is not yet clear.

Jerry Jones has always claimed to have final say in all franchise related decisions. Jerry Jones hired Garrett as OC before he hired Wade Phillips as the HC. Despite what he says the man can't help himself. He has always insisted on loyalty from everybody including Head Coaches. What that translates in Jerry's head is that they always agree publicly with his decisions.

One day Parcells won't even mention Terrell Owens name, mentioning him by jersey number. The next day he is with Jerry claiming he signed off on the decision to put him on the team.

McCarthy was singling out Kellen Moore's play designs BEFORE he ever interviewed for the Cowboys job.

Secondly, does it NOT make sense to keep a coordinator whose offense was #1 in the league in his first year on the job?

Thirdly, take a look at the assistants under Garrett, who did they have connections with? Jones? Or Garrett himself?

And just look at the rest of the staff that McCarthy has hired. First, they're a huge group, and second, they're all HIS GUYS, not Jerry's.

The answers are easy.

McCarthy has won the Super Bowl--this speaks a lot. I sure hope he can lead Dallas to Multiple Super Bowl wins. Yes , I said Multiple Super Bowl wins. In
the movie Wall Street
Gordon Gekko said Greed is Good:yourock::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin::starspin:

Well, I'll certainly admit that not all news sources can be trusted. Also, I can't dispute your common sense reasoning. The Cowboys were the #1 offense as you say. However, can you dispute the fact that Jerry Jones has always claimed to have a final say? Hasn't he a;ways had a history of interference that negatively effects the HC doing everything the way he plans?

As impressive as the offense looked on paper, it resulted in an 8-8 record and that is why McCarthy is now the HC.

I hope the Cowboys come together to win a championship under McCarthy but I still feel skepticism is justified. Experienced veteran head Coach....heavily touted young genius OC.....haven't we seen this before?

i hope I get proved wrong. I would rather be wrong with my team winning a championship than right with my team going 6-10 and McCarthy loses his job. I mean that most sincerely.

Pollack's work with the o-line allowed callahan to be the oc until Garrett stabbed him in the back. Pollack developed freddy, zack, collins and even leary. Pretty impressive imo.

It was Bill Callahan that built the OLine that became dominant in 2014.
- A big part of the OL's success was Callahan's scheme, especially his run blocking scheme.
- Callahan's Zone Run Blocking scheme was as good as any and better than most.
- The Zone Run Blocking scheme has become a huge factor in the success of several teams in recent years.
- The ZBS got the Rams to the Super Bowl for the 2018 season.
- The ZBS got the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2019.
- Lack of ability to defend the ZBS was the Cowboys #1 problem in 2019 and in the Ram playoff game.
- Teams like the Packers and Vikings had a resurgence in 2019 due to the ZBS.

Pollack was able to keep it going with another quality season from the OL in 2016.
- The OL started to have issues in 2017. With Leary and Free gone, their replacements were not executing well.
- The replacement players didn't appear to understand the Zone Run Blocking scheme in 2017.

Columbo was good at individual coaching but the OL struggled with scheme issues with him as the OL coach. They often struggled to execute Zone Run Blocking plays.
- He had played in a Man blocking scheme but the Cowboys success in the Martin/Frederick era was in Callahan's Zone/Man scheme.

Philbin
- Uses Zone Run Blocking.
- Some RBs that had decent success in Green Bay, rarely seemed to have success with other NFL teams. That's a sign the blocking and running scheme is good.
- Ryan Grant had a couple of great years in Green Bay before injuries took their toll. He was with the Giants 2 years prior to GB and didn't play a snap.

Coaches:
  • Callahan:
    • Cowboys OL coach from 2012 to 2014. Called plays in 2013.
    • Implemented a combination Zone and Man blocking scheme for the Cowboys.
    • Both the Ravens and Browns wanted to hire him as OL coach for 2014 but Jerry would not let him make the lateral move.
    • Wanted out of Dallas because he "hated" working with Garrett (It started with Garrett's refusal to allow Callahan to bench Free in 2012).
    • Hired by Skins as their OL coach in 2015.
    • Skins added Assistant Head Coach to his title in 2017.
    • Skins promoted him to interim head coach in 2019.
    • Hired as Browns OL coach in 2020.
  • Pollack:
    • Cowboys Assistant OL coach 2013 to 2014
    • Cowboys OL coach 2015 to 2017
    • Bengals OL coach for 1 year (2018)
    • Jets OL coach in 2019.
  • Paul Alexander:
    • Cowboys OL coach to start the 2018 season.
    • Fired after 7 games.
  • Marc Columbo
    • Cowboys Assistant OL coach 2016 to mid 2018.
    • Cowboys OL coach 2nd half 2018 and 2019.
  • Joe Philbin
    • Cowboys OL coach 2020

Players:
  • Frederick: drafted 2013
  • Martin: drafted 2014
  • Ron Leary: udfa 2012. Signed 36M contract with Broncos in 2017.
  • Tyron: drafted 2011 (moved to LT 2012)
  • Jermey Parnell:
    • udfa 2010 (originally signed by Miami, signed by Cowboys during the 2010 season)
    • Became the full time Swing Tackle in 2012
    • Started 7 games in 2014 including 2 playoff games. Had 1 sack allowed in those 7 games.
    • Signed a 32 million contract in 2015 with Jax.
  • La'el Collins
    • 2015 udfa (would have been a 1st round pick if not for the death of his ex-girlfriend before the draft)
    • 11 starts at LG in 2015. Struggled.
    • 3 starts at LG in 2016.
    • Became starting RT in 2017. Struggled.
    • Really struggled to start 2018 with new OL coach Alexander.
    • Best season was 2019; although, still made far more mistakes than 2nd year OLineman Connor Williams.
    • Still not as good as Parnell was in the 7 starts in 2014.
Cowboys Offensive Line:
  • 2014: Best overall season since the Nineties.
  • 2016: 2nd best OL season of the Garrett era; although, Free allowed 9 sacks.

As long as McCarthy tells him to teach that sweet holding disguised as "blocking" technique, the Packers were amazing at, i'm good.

Thanks for sharing, very well thought out evaluation.

i don't have any qualms how the Cowboys succeeded as a pass blocking unit, and we clearly became
a better pass blocking team running team in 2019. but i still
had questions in how Columbo, Brown and Moore designed and implement the run scheme.
i thought it was built more for grind, pound and clock control than stretch splash plays.

"Lumbo groomed and glued Lael as better players while he also was successful in adjusting subs for
injured players such as Silo Fua, Brandon Knight and even barely getting by with very average Cam Fleming.
Williams is not dominant as his high draft status expectations
but he's not near as bad as some here want to make him out to be. He's serviceable.

i'll gladly take being 2nd in the NFL in least sacks allowed, but the run scheme really needed revamping
and the Packers and Philbin has had a long line of molding non-1st round OLinemen into Pro bowlers.

Parnell started around 57 games (4 years) and was their best OL there for awhile.

It was surprising how quickly he seemed to drop off and vanish from the league. I thought for sure he would have latched on somewhere after the Jags released him, but he essentially disappeared and hasn't been heard from since.
