No you tell me what went wrong, the same defense that had folks drooling over the next dynamic duo with the same coaches , one being talked about as a head coach. Vander Esh and Crawford being out hurt the defense as a whole, I dont think Tank recovered from surgery and no camp. While Quinn was good at rushing the passer, he was a liability against the run. depth was also weak with Woods being out games with knee injury.

After the 2018 season everyone including myself had high hopes as our younger players showed good potential. It's not the first time nor will it be the last that an offense or a defense don't live up to expectations.

The starting three are very good, it's the depth that needs to be addressed.

Joe Thomas and Justin March have shown to be ok. It's Luke Gifford and Francis Bernard that need to step up to make this a quality unit.

Thomas is a good backup. March is a special-teammer. I'm hopefully Bernard shows enough to knock him off the roster. I will be surprised if Gifford doesn't make the team based on how he was playing when he wasn't injured. Injuries or a step back in play could be his downfall.

I'm surprised that we didn't add more LBs as those seven are all we've got. I think that's a pretty good indication that Nolan plans to use ends/tweeners on the outside at times. Candidates for that would be Anae, Jelks, LaDarius Hamilton, Ron'Dell Carter and even Dorance Armstrong. Lawrence, Smith and Gregory could possibly even be considered for it, essentially giving us a 5-2 look with all three out there.

-Per his skill set, versatility and physical athletic ability, and experience, Joe Thomas has in his ability to be
a solid backup. He has speed, coverage skills, can make plays in space, supposedly has ability to play outside and inside, and he's a fine special teams coverage guy.
What he is missing and what has hurt him since he's been here is durability. He cant seem to stay healthy.
He'd probably get a nice FA offers from 4-3 scheme teams if he could.
i fear he'll be another injury problem for 3rd year str8.

- Justin March is purely a special teams player. Whether vs run or pass, he offers no value in the regular defense.i hope a new name can surface to eventually replace him on the depth chart.
I hope the new regime will want better and the personnel dept can get better.

-Luke Gifford had the great preseason game vs Niners then promptly got hurt- finally returned mid season
and got IR'ed. Seems instinctive but has to flat prove durable.

- If there is another LVE injury, Sean Lee could be moved to his spot,
But what if Lee himself is banged up and out ? Thomas ?
i too am surprised that more 4-3 LB candidates have not been brought in, otherwise
we are gonna see off the street :(

LVE and Jaylon bring an inhuman amount of range when both are healthy. Watch their tape from 2018 - toss plays against us went nowhere. Screens went nowhere. Too much speed and too good at tackling when they got there.

2019 was heartbreaking, man. To see both those young guys break out and then just immediately regress, I don't know how else to phrase it. Both dudes' medicals are really scary, so while I hope for the best, I'd say all bets are off for 2020.

Whoops, forgot Azur Kamara, our other rookie linebacker who kind of fits that standout rusher mold.

Not buying the hype again this year. Was pumped about our LB corps last year and was extremely disappointed.
Same here. Went into the year thinking they were the strength of our team and ended with them being one of our biggest weaknesses

I wonder how much quinn being bad against the run, hurt the lb's. Anyone have a lb play analysis based on the right, left, and middle?

Their kryptonite is play action and blockers. If they're clean and in open field they can make the play. If Jaylon has to plant and change direction he struggles. I've seen plays where Jaylon looks like he's on skates trying to make a tackle in traffic. He doesn't get low and engage with the blocker's inside or outside shoulder to release and attack the ball carrier. He tries to avoid the blocker almost like a cb would.

Against GB they torched us running to the left side against Covington, Armstrong and Quinn.
