The old staff used the SS and FS as the same. They thought they could be used in either spot to fool the offense. At least I read that once, they were interchangeable.
Shows, again, how incompetent they were at the scheme as well as coaching.
Most every team does this, including MM.

What it shows is how irrelevant the SS position is.

Adams has 98 more tackles than Woods, but he also started 13 more games.
Adams is also used much more in blitzes than Woods. For which he has 23 QB hits, and 28 TFL, as to Woods, basically nothing. But that is the scheme and not all on the player.
Which in a way means nothing.

Average tackles per games started 5.9 for Adams, 5.3 for Woods.
Also a lot of tackles for LB's and S's can show the front 4 and front 7 is not all that good. So need to look at that as well. But defensive scheme comes into play also.

As I said, for the money, give me Woods for this year. Draft a S next year if need be.

It's not an apples to apples comparison as they play two separate safety positions. I agree if Woods isn't retained, they should address via the draft next season.

I hope I'm wrong this year but our safety position on paper and film has been and still is one on the weakest positions on the team. Everyone looks at pics and coverage which is very important but our line up is also very suspect with run support. Esp. when Smith (our "great" MLB) fails the play which is quite often. Dix tackles with his helmet and Woods either hits direct or misses the tackle completely and often looks lost on coverage.
Perhaps our new DC will be able to help with that but I'll wait to see it on the field.

If I’m the Cowboys and IF we ended up with Adams I would keep Xavier woods and trade Haha. Xavier could learn from Adams and then we would have a safety duo that flip positions and further more disguise our coverages. Xavier has potential and youth and we won’t have to pay big money if we extend him cause he hasn’t been elite but he has been good

and his name is Xavier Woods. He is another player I think was misused by the previous coaching staff. Xavier Woods doesn't seem like a ball hawk to me. He has been better laying hits. I think pairing him with a true free safety and playing him close to the line of scrimmage more often would give him the best opportunity to produce. I really wanted the team to bring in Earl Thomas which would have put Woods at SS, or for them to draft a free safety instead of Trysten Hill. Clinton-Dix would fill that role well enough this year but they should try to get a ball hawk for next season.
Don’t sleep on Donovan Wilson.

Woods and Adams have been in the NFL for 3 years. Adams is supposedly what makes the Jets defense go. Woods is not the same for the Cowboys.

Yet Adams 3 career INT's....Woods....5 INT's (on our lame butt defense)
For the price, give me Woods.
...that will stir up the Adams slobberers for a Tuesday morning. :muttley:

Generally, a free safety should make more interceptions than a strong safety. Adams' value is in his ability to cover (blow things up) underneath and attack the line of scrimmage.

However, again, I hold that if we're going to play a lot of press man with the safeties over the top, then Adams has less value here. If we were going to play single-high, then Adams would be far better than anyone we could put at SS.

Not true. Not the Marinelli and Kris Richard years.

The secondary coach before Richard played Byron Jones at SS in 2017. It's comical that fans didn't even notice...

Mike Nolan is going to play a base 2-deep (Quarters) coverage. They still call one Safety the SS and one the FS but they're basically the same job. Their responsibilities will be divided up right/left instead of deep / in-the-box.

Better than $17 million for 2 less INT's.
Besides they will draft S's next year. I will still roll the dice on Woods this year. He can't be that much worse than Adams for the money, but who knows he could be better. :D

A lot more to playing safety than interceptions. They should have drafted a safety last year.

Cant be that much worst than Adams? You mean you dont know?

Hard to have an educated conversation with a guy that doesnt even know how the two compare.

So all you did was look up interception numbers? I cant tell you without pause that Adams is one of the top safeties, if not the best SS in the NFL. Woods is a JAG at the position and probably isnt even a SS. More suited for FS.

Adams is the leader of his defense.

Those coaches were more of a joke than the latter coaches.

It was just not well thought out.

Having Martinelli running the front end of the defense and Richard the back..

was a kiss of death nobody foresaw.

And before them we had Robby Ryan running things.

We just have had no defensive coaching at all.

The name to watch for at safety that could be our Jamal Adams is Donovan Wilson.

This is a perfect example of fans overvaluing their own.

Wilson is a special teams player at best.

Woods is an average safety at best.
