One thing I'm 100% certain of is that Jimmy would have managed his players far better than Switzer saw fit to if he had stayed around. I'm pretty doggone certain that Troy Aikman would have agreed 100% with that! It's really all a moot point now, in any case.

Whether Jimmy is coaching or not, winning the NFCCG @Candlestick is a 50/50 shot at best. People are not being realistic by discounting that great SF team. So to answer your question, winning 4 in a row comes down to that one game.

You are assuming the Cowboys wouldn't have had home field advantage. If Jimmy were coaching them, they probably would have gone 13-3 or 14-2 and been the #1 seed. I definitely think 4 in a row was possible had Jimmy stayed. The team would have had more discipline and incoming talent would've been better..

They lost to the Lions and Browns at home that year....

AND...………...would then THAT Cowboys team be considered the best of all time?

Who do you blame more for the breakup? Jerry or Jimmy?

As much as Jerry is a @#$%^$## for pushing Jimmy out, Jimmy is a punk for leaving. How do you leave when you are going for #3?

I blame them both. Two big egos that couldn't make it work.

YES!

Great question.

I do think both are to blame, the size of those two egos was just too much to overcome.

I think there was enough talent to be compared to the 70's Steelers if everything went right.

Does Deion still get away with mugging Irvin in the championship game ?
Subsequently is Jerry still driven to pursue Deion the following year assuming we won championship game and super bowl ?
Do players get injured ? Jimmy known for extreme camps

while Jimmy is much much better at coach than Barry — the team was wound very tight .. the stars will still be partying at “The White House “
Drugs and prostitutes everywhere -
But Jimmy would allow it

no Guarantees on anything — who knows

even Jimmy said he was done regardless of what many want to say and rewrite !! It came directly from Jimmy himself ..

I mean let’s explore the Jerry and Jimmy relationship that lead to this separation -
Would that tension spill even more amongst the team ? Could it have a negative effect on the team ?
The pressure of repeating was insane per the players and coaches including Jimmy — there was a sense of relief winning the second one -/ Jimmy had his car delivered to Atlanta just so he could leave immediately after the game //
Can you imagine what the pressure would’ve been going for three peat then four peat ??!!
Insane !!

We all want to pass blame or simply guarantee oh if Jimmy was still coach we would’ve won 4 maybe more in a row — some of the players have even said the same thing — but even the coach himself questioned how plausible that would’ve been — too many factors
No one would ever know
I sure would’ve loved to see it have been tried with Jimmy at helm though
Very well thought out post. Well done.

Yes, the Boys would have one 4 in a row with Jimmy. Jerry gets the majority of the blame for Jimmy leaving.

The team has been a shell of itself ever since.

5 in a row if Jimmy stays.

Maybe more, since he was so good identifying/developing talent.

Does Jimmy prevent Erik Williams from wrecking his car and injuring himself? Does he prevent Emmitt from pulling his hamstring late in the regular season and not being close to 100% for the playoffs?

Yes, can you prove it otherwise?

Cowboys players feared Jimmy. Barry and Jerry scared no one.

Jimmy would have never allowed the Deion signing, and I'm not sure we win in 95 without it.

We would have not dropped off the map so quickly and would have been much more of a contender well into the late 90s if Jimmy stayed. That part is undeniable, but if we would have won MORE SBs, I'm not sure there. Probably about the same if we are being fair.

Not true. Jimmy recruited Deion hard in 93 Pro Bowl Game. Both Jimmy and Irvin lobbied him hard.

Jimmy hated losing more than he loved winning.

Jimmy, like Belichick, emphasized dominating in all 3 phases of the game.

And all the 90's players swear that they win at least 5 SBs if Jimmy stays. It's one thing if only Mike or Emmitt say it.

Troy, Moose, Woody and Novacek are not prone to hyperbole.

Jerry signed the checks that got Jimmy the talent. I blame Jimmy. Jerry was the boss, nuff said. Jimmy was an egomaniac that couldn't stand taking second fiddle to his boss. Don't get me wrong, that ego made him great! Not so much when the cap hit and he couldn't get all the talent he wanted. Miami????

In an NFL Films documentary, Jimmy himself said he was heavily fatigued of coaching after the 1993 season and might have voluntarily quit coaching on his own even without that spat with Jerry. In addition, Cowboys players reported that his overbearing style was already starting to backfire rather than help.

I never personally heard that about Sanders.

What I DO recall is Johnson being critical of Jones signing Sanders and letting Harper, Stepnoski etc go.

This was his own voice, not a quote, so I know he said it.

The two wouldnt seem to add up, but ok.

The question was do we win MORE if he stays, and I'm not sure the answer is definitely yes.

Do they not have the turnovers vs SF if they have a different coach? That's impossible to say.

Green Bay had caught and surpassed them heading into the 96 range.

Sure, maybe they win another.....and theres absolutely zero doubt they are a better team with him there, but again if there no Sanders, I don't think 95 happens, and I don't recall at all where Johnson was lobbying hard for him. If he was he was being hypocritical afterward, hence my comment.

Read the books, Jimmy was Done mentally and so were those teams from his 5 years of hard azz driving for perfection. His act only lasts so long before people say frig you. Parcells was the same way.

Possibly 5 in a row

Despite being decimated by injuries and coached by Barry Switzer, the 1996 team still won the division, dominated Minnesota in the WC game and if Irvin doesn’t get hurt probably beats Carolina to at least make it to the NFCCG against Green Bay (who Dallas has dominated earlier in the year on MNF and at that point Farve was 0-7 against Dallas in his career). I don’t think it’s a stretch at all to say Jimmy could have won a title with that team. When healthy we were at worst the third most talented team in football that season (behind GB and Denver).

Although the Cowboys eventually held a 451–294 advantage in total offensive yards, the 49ers converted three turnovers into three touchdowns in the first quarter en route to the 38–28 victory. On the third play of the game, San Francisco cornerback Eric Davis intercepted Aikman's pass, plowing right through the intended target (receiver Kevin Williams) as he snagged the ball out of the air, and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown. On the next Dallas possession, Davis stripped the ball away from receiver Michael Irvin and fellow defensive back Tim McDonald recovered it on the Dallas 39, setting up a 29-yard touchdown pass from Young to running back Ricky Watters, who eluded several Cowboys defenders high-stepping his way down the sideline en route to the goal line in spectacular showboating fashion. Williams then fumbled the ensuing kickoff when hit by 49ers running back Adam Walker. San Francisco kicker Doug Brien recovered the ball at the Cowboys 35-yard line, and then Young went back to work, converting a third and 1 with a 2-yard sneak and then throwing a 14-yard pass to receiver John Taylor. On the next play, Young ran the ball nine yards to the 1-yard line, and running back William Floyd took the ball into the end zone from there to give his team a 21–0 lead with 7:33 left in the first quarter.[16]

Quite frankly, if not for 7 and a half minutes of ridiculous bad luck, the Cowboys would have won 4 in a row anyways. Anyone who watched that game remembers San Francisco basically on the ropes for the last 52 minutes of that game.

So, yeah, Jimmy's game prep and Dallas wins 4.
