For the trolls and liars on here who think he had to sign it to negotiate a deal... we all know that D-Law got tagged two years in a row. In 2018 he signed the tender and ended up playing on it. In 2019 he was again tagged but eventually signed his long term contract.
So when in 2019 did Lawrence sign the tender before signing the long term deal? Anybody got a link?
yeah but DL also had the injury, and he refused to get the operation until he signed a contract, so if they tagged him again, he would have missed
most of the season.

Watching Dak Haters spin their small brain gear levers is amazing....

Some how Dak signing the Exclusive Franchise Tag IS another sign the Cowboys aren't sold on Dak:yourock:

We don't like Dak but
1. Exclusive Franchise Tag - Deny ANY other team to Negotiate

2. Signed Andy Dalton to $3M - Great Backup

3. Did NOT rescind the Exclusive Franchise Tag and ALLOWED Dak to stack $31.4M on the books for 2020

Why now, why early?

My only guess would be Dak and his agent knew he would eventually sign it and with all going on in the world and the endless media distractions, Dak's Mom whispered in his ear and told him to sign it. France probably advised against it but Dak's Mom overruled him LOL.

But in the back of my mind, a little part of me would have enjoyed the following scenario:

1. Dak holds out.
2. Dalton starts and gets the team on a roll.
3. Cowboys and Dak come to terms on a contract at some point in the season.

The funny part would be the NASCAR 40 car pileup this place would have in regards to the decision on the starting QB. Posters bumping fenders, steering/countersteering to avoid the carnage then bickering and fighting on the infield grass.

Would have made for some entertainment seeing how fast the two sides would change their previous "logic"?????
did it now because it extends the negotiations a bit. ALSO, my hunch is a deal is fairly close. No reason to sign this thing Monday otherwise.

No what I’m saying is there is no requirement to go from A to B to C. Some people are trying to paint this as a necessary step in the process to an eventual signing. It’s not.

Didn’t read all 11 pages. Has anyone mentioned the fact that no QB has ever played on the tag and then signed a long term deal with that team? Dak would be the first ever. Doesn’t bode well fo a deal getting done, especially if the price goes up during the year.

I agree the front office (I.e. Stephen Jones) bumgled this whole negotian from the start. Had they signed him last year before Goff and Wentz, they could have inked him to a 5yr deal (including the 4th year if original contract) for $31mm-$33mm and $95mm-$105mm guaranteed.that will have been a bargain by the time he signs his extension.
making a huge assumption his agent and camp would have done this, I believe NO, they would not have..they already had a number in mind and they were going to stick with it regardless of what wentz and Goff did..

in fact, the reason he's signing the tender on Monday is thats the first Hurdle before signing the longer deal. THIS is a great sign. Means they are very sure of a deal being struck...otherwise why sign the tender? This is great.

# 3 cant happen lol ....you need to read the whole thread!
# 2 would be fun
# 1 wont happen
Yeah, I am not even close to knowledgable about the finer points of contract negotiations. #3 has happened but not under the same circumstances I assume. My post was more wishful thinking when reading previous 2016 season "QB controversy" threads.

He is a great athlete, a good quarterback, and seems like a good person, but he is not one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and I would not pay him anything close to what the Cowboys offered.

He was 8-8 last year with one of the better running backs in the league, one of the better receivers in the league, and one of the better offensive lines in the league. 50% or more of the QBs in the NFL could have won 8 games with the Cowboys last year.

He’s 40-24 as a starter. I mean if wins and losses are just a QB stat.

STEVIE AND JERRAH WILL MILK MORE PR ALL WEEK, THEN A SIGNING WILL OCCUR.

That's exactly my take here. They're going to milk the drama and hype of this for all it's worth. Then, at the last moment, they'll sign Dak.

In fact, I sort of wonder, and just my imagination a bit, if they and Dak may all be in on the joke together. Dak grew up a Cowboys fan. He dreamed of doing what he's doing. I don't think he's going to let this opportunity to and end up having to play against his childhood team. Likewise, I think Jerry does like Dak. I wouldn't be shocked if they actually already know the deal with each other and are just toying with everyone. Just my imagination based on what I see with Jerry and understand about Dak.

Let the QB competition commence!

If "ONLY" this were true. And IF the newly signed Prescott gets beat out...?

It's the main reason to watch this year if there's a season. To see all the maneuvering once Prescott doesn't quite meet McCarthy's expectations as an NFL thrower will be worth all the comic relief that will be offered up here.
Get ya popcone reddy!

I see it totally different. There is no reason to sign the tag before a deal is done. It in no way signals a deal is close. In fact, I see it more likely that talks have deteriorated to the point where Dak’s camp may be fearing the tag being rescinded. That seems unlikely but with Dalton signed, that fear could creep in if negotiations got heated recently. To me, this move is actually a hardball move from Dak. It locks in that cap number which the team hopes to reduce. He may have decided to just play on the tag, bet on himself again with the new coaching staff, and hope Watson and Mahomes get signed for even more. I see this as trying to force Jerry’s hand. It also could simply be to lock in a salary in case there is no season or a shortened one. I suspect the PA has informed players not under contract to get it done before some type of deal is struck so they will be covered and get paid this year.
