Players under contract are only paid 16 game checks. No season no checks. With the exception of signing bonuses.
I'm not sure what component of a franchise tag gets paid up front but I'm thinking some does. Plus, its fully guaranteed, right? I'm thinking he will get a significant chunk even if the season isn't played as opposed to nothing if he remained unsigned.
If there is no season, the players will still get some pay as the league does continue to generate some revenue. How much they would get is the question.

Or they may already have a deal, like I was saying that I think will happen. With Jerry being the showman he is and always loving any limelight he can get, I'd imagine he's just trying to milk this for all the attention he can get out of this. Once he gets close to having to sign him, I think he will.
I’ve argued all along Jerry doesn’t have a problem making Dak the highest paid QB but he’s been receiving much pushback from the critics and fans.

But when push comes to shove in whether we Cave or let him walk then public opinion will probably be more supportive of Jerry caving in and blame Dak. Ultimately placing more pressure on our QB to lead us to the promise land.

The bigger discussion is was Dalton brought in as insurance in case a dealt can’t be done with Dak or merely a Legit backup .

I’d lean towards insurance and possibly leverage.
I don't believe that Dak was ever going to hold out... it doesn't make sense for a quarterback to do so. Preparation is such a big part of what they do.

However, if I was going to hold out there probably wouldn't be a more optimum time to do it than when Cooper Rush (undrafted with 3 total NFL passes) and Ben Dinucci (6th round rookie) are the only other options. Signing Dalton closed that window, however minuscule it might have been.

I’m pretty sure there’s no signing bonus with franchise tag.

No, players contract are divided up into 16 game checks. Of course any sponsorship revenue they have outside the team is still coming in.

when Russ Wilson signed his deal, everyone was aghast about what he got paid...but now it looks like a cheap deal for the team. Same thing with Dak another 1 from now.

Since when has pushback from the media and fans stopped Jerry from doing what he wanted?

I understand but only signing a franchise tag is basically holding out of signing an extension which is so rare for QB’s.

I should have asked do we think he’ll sign an extension before July 15th. And what are the implications if he doesn’t.

Does that mean the impasse in negotiations is too great and this could be final year with Prescott?
Your thoughts ?

Naw brother, after 25 years of the same old crap maybe a good old fashioned competition at QB will at least possibly wake up my apathy towards this team. Lol! :)

Should be entertaining at least.

Totally agree. I am not sure of Andy has enough left to unseat Dak. BUT.....they better dang well have an open competition at every position. RB included.

yup and not a minute before lol. They will bask in the glow and squeeze this for all its worth.

Yup, I think that's what is going on here. Like I said to Diehard, I don't know the last time pushback from the media and fans has stopped Jerry from doing what he wants. So, I think I can safely rule that out as to why Dak hasn't gotten the extension beyond the tag. Besides, it's natural, with us being the Cowboys, that something like tagging Dak and having him wait would draw a lot of attention, which Jerry craves more than Scotch. I think we all know that all too well about Jerry. So, I think it's logical that Jerry saw it as a way to extract as much attention from this as possible, and then do what I think a lot of us expect by signing Dak.

Firing Garrett went against everything Jerry wanted to do but public pressure was too great.

Yeah, but he kept him here for a long time. And I think it was also probably due to the players too. They were clearly lost. Garrett had lost the locker room, and I think Jerry could see that. I don't think it was so much public pressure. It may have played a role, but I'm not sure it's as big as what he was seeing from the players.

The odds are still strong that that they will work out a long term deal before July 15. But there is a significant, non zero chance that they won't, and I believe Dak signing the tender weeks before he has to strengthens those odds.

It became a glaring public opinion hurdle to overcome near the end of this season is what I’m referring to.

I agree. Jerry’s going to cave.

It does take a little pressure off to get a deal done immediately. But I don't think the Cowboys want to go through this again in a year, especially with the worry prices might be higher then, so I think odds are high a deal will be done by July 15.

Yea, Jerry was going to cave all along. He’s just been presenting a tough guy persona to appeal to the pushback.

Jerry’s comfortable with making Dak the highest paid QB and if anyone can sell it he can. He’s been all in all along.

But this is going to put more pressure on Dak and he’s going to receive more criticism.
