When you bet on yourself you don't factor in getting hurt.

Dak will make 31 million this year and factor in his endorsements? He probably feels like he's playing with house money.

He’s also insured himself for injury. The total in endorsements and insurance is said to be about 50 million. Also, the endorsements extend beyond next year, meaning if he gets released or walks or sucks, he endorsements are ‘long term’.

I don't get it, is there really that big of a difference in 1 year for the Cowboys? Give him 4 years at $33 million and move on.
I think it's just more that the Cowboys don't "do" four year QB deals as part of their philosophy and they are willing (for now) to stick to it despite the trend of the rest of the league. It reminds me of the Joey Bosa contract hold out, the Chargers wouldn't remove the offset language despite pretty much every pick in his slot before him getting it removed. The Chargers just didn't want to budge on it, and Bosa's agents were baffled by their unwillingness to do so. But supposedly it was some core part of their philosophy.

The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott are reportedly at an impasse over their preferred contract length in extension talks...

I call BS on this article. The Cowboys can't be "stunned". All of the QB's who've signed recently signed 4 year deals. BS.

A compromise seems simple enough.

Five years with the team agreeing not to tag him.

Doesn't seem logical but I think Seattle and Clowney had that arrangement.

Heading into that fifth year they will either have his replacement or need to resign him anyway.

If he hasn't had a reasonable amount of success by year five, the team is going to need to move on from him anyway, and if he does succeed, Jerry is going to have to open the vault.

If that's the case, then the guaranteed money would have to increase so much that any cap savings you're talking about wouldn't exist anyway. I feel like you're leaving out full guarantees, which is what matters in total. If the signing bonus doesn't change (which, I doubt), then the guaranteed money does anyway so you'd not be saving anything, regardless.

Guaranteed money does not have the impact on the cap that bonuses do. Salary that's guaranteed is still just salary and treated the same whether its guaranteed or not. What I am referring to is the ability to spread out his up front money and any subsequent bonuses over an extra year which would amount to a substantial yearly cap savings, This has always been the case. He will likely get close to the same bonuses and guaranteed money whether its 4 or 5 years. The 5th year will simply be another year at a particular salary level but will allow all signing and bonus money to be spread out and count less each year. Its a simple concept and hasn't changed for 20 or so years now.

They can add dummy years at the end of contracts if they just want to spread out cap hits. They did it with Romo's contract.

The issue with the length of contract is that the Cowboys want to delay the decision of signing him to a 2nd big contract.
- For players that sign big contracts and play to the end of the contract, the "bargain" years for the team are at the end.

Dak/Agent want to be at the end of this contract before he is over 30.

Dak is not going to accept dummy years because he may have to honor them. This is a simple situation. Dak wants another quicker payday and the team want to spread out his cap figure and have their franchise guy for 5 years instead of 4.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!! Because their teams got this taken care of when there was still a year left on the deal. People can blame Dak for this and say he was selfish all the want................but the Cowboys FO messed this one up. PERIOD!!!!!!!!

I mean why would he want to sign anything over four years? Doesn't make sense for him financially.

I don't blame either side. Dak knows the QB money will continue to go up over the years. He does not want to lock into the current market price for more than 4 years. Dallas knows this as well and wants to lock in right now.

And we all know Dallas is the one that will budge in the end like they did with Zeke.

Well, the Cowboys need to stop being "stunned." Again, the Cowboys are essentially trying to treat Dak Prescott like a 1st round pick...without paying him like a first round pick. The reason Wentz and Goff is under contract until 2024 is because the Eagles and Rams paid about $30 million for the extra season.

So if the Cowboys want Dak for that extra year...pay him the $26 million for that extra year of control.

Simple.

Dak appears unwilling to sign a more team friendly deal.

Good for him. He played for pennies compared to what he did for this team for 4 years. Romo did the same and got paid a ton. Him and his team are not going to budge. Screw team friendly deals. Would you take less money at work for the better of the company? Absolutely not. But so many people think athletes should do this. They think because it's a team sport, their individual salaries take a back seat.

It kind of already is. Wilson, Wentz and Goff were all 4-year deals. Even Tannehill was 4.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's stupid for the Cowboys to expect 5.

werent some of those extensions?

Let him play on the Tag. I really don’t care anymore.

I expect Jerry to cave but I’ll applaud if he doesn’t.
+1 well said if he wins the superbowl over the next 2 years on the tag then give him the farm. Heck a super bowl appearance would work. Even an NFC title game and I will be OK with it. If not then reevaluate at that time.

If one year is all they’re disputing he could always renegotiate in a couple years.

I think he’s over evaluating himself and based on the offers I’ve seen that the Cowboys have been more than generous .

Bingo!!

If Dak takes us where no one else has in 25 years he can ask for whatever he wants. And he should.
