Teams aren't used to players wanting a shorter contract. Usually they want long-term security but given how QB salaries have been rising expect Dak's stance to become common.
Watson wants a 3 year deal.
Pretty wild.
I'm sure the logic is the same though

That's my point.

Just being under contract for 5 years doesn't mean you sign a 5-year deal.
But Wentz and Goff started to get paid on their 4-year extensions before the extension started, making those more than 4-year contracts. That’s the point of the people you seem to be disagreeing with.

Now that Dak has signed the the tender, the pressure is somewhat off for both parties.
They still may iron out the final deal, but if not, that's fine.

Even if they tag Dak again next year, that average is about 34 mil.

You mean, they started getting paid on the 4 year extension nearly a year before the 1st contract expired....making them effectively 5 year contracts.

B/c it is an irrelevant point.

How is that irrelevant? It’s the economics of the contract. Which is the point
No, it's not. It is about the amount of time until the player becomes a free agent. It's not about cap savings or whatever.

I think that’s the problem. We are talking about how the money works and you are only concerned about when someone comes up for a contract next. As long as everyone is clear that a 4-year contract is not the same as a 4-year extension as far as how the money works, then I think we’re fine.

The Cowboys haven't won krap in 25 years but everyone still gets paid. The Cowboys took full advantage of a two time Pro Bowler that started every game in his first four seasons as a 4th round pick making chump change. Who are they to even pretend that Dak is unreasonable?

Dak was never the one holding things up, once again it's Jerry trying to prove what a savvy businessman he is. Dak has nothing left to prove pertaining to this particular contract.

True statement, instead of looking at the situation in totality, the lemmings always look for the cliff; making POTM comments.

Not really. Your logic is that...the value of the contract is the same at 4 or 5 years? It would be 4x160 or 5x200, and the guarantees will escalate accordingly too. The cap hit isn't really going to change much b/c of the 5th year.

This is true but it is also true that there is a huge difference in the amount of cap flexibility you have year to year and especially year 1 when the contract is this massive and you're spread out over 4 v 5 yrs.

Bingo!!

If Dak takes us where no one else has in 25 years he can ask for whatever he wants. And he should.

You got a better shot with these guys taking us than Dak....:muttley:

Wentz and Goff are under the control of the Eagles and Rams for 5 years...their rookie deal was 4 years plus a team option for a 5th year...The Eagles and Rams then have 2 years worth of franchise tags...so Wentz and Goff are essentially under control for 7 years...because they are 1st round picks.

Dak, not selected in the 1st round...has a 4 year deal too...but the team does not get that 5th year option...therefore the Cowboys control Dak for 4 years...and they have 2 years worth of franchise tags...so the Cowboys have 6 years of control (and 7).

The drawback/tradeoff of the 5th year option is financial vs control. The Cowboys do not get that extra year of control HOWEVER they also don't have to pay Dak nearly as much because he wasn't a 1st rounder. What is that difference? $26 million dollars...so one could argue that extra year of control is worth $26 million dollars.

And that is my point...The leverage Dak has is his extra year...The Cowboys are essentially asking him to give up that extra year for nothing. If I were Dak, I would say, fine, you want an extra year deal like Wentz and Goff...PAY ME for that extra extra of control: $26 million extra dollars.

Otherwise, I am not signing a deal where, Goff and Wentz and I all become free agents in 2024 but they have made upwards of $26 million dollars more than I have.

Under control for 5 years NOW. When they signed their extensions, they were under contract control for 6 years - 2019, 2020 on their rookie deals + the 4 year extensions.

It is a 4-year extension that starts after the 5th year. The new contract is 4 years. Don't try to get cute with it, it wasn't a 5-year deal, it was a 4-year extension that didn't start until the last year of the rookie deal ended.

You don't, for instance, say that Tom Brady had a 20-year contract with the Pats.

Your Brady point is ridiculous.

For all intents and purposes, when the Eagles signed Wentz, they had contract control over him for 6 years. They did that to spread the cap hit for the signing bonus over a longer period. On top of that, any restructures which will surely come at some point, then have more years to spread those hits out as well.

That's why Dallas wants 5 years. They want the 5th year to spread the signing bonus out another season AND then also have flexibility to spread other bonuses/ restructure over a longer contract. What Dak is asking for is definitely different than what Wentz and Goff got.

Be OK with me. That way he and CAA could go out and find out what teams would actually give up. I've a feeling we wouldn't be paying as much as 35 AAV but that's just my opinion.

Dak could probably say the same thing about the Cowboys unwillingness to come down from 5 years....

I don't blame Dak for wanting 4 years - he probably would prefer 3.

It isn't about maximizing this contract, it's about maximizing his NEXT contract. The younger he is as a free agent, the bigger that next one will be.

True, but who do Dak plan to pay for?Cowboys wont let him go to the last year if a contract unless stuff go left again. I'll doubt Dak gets +35M in the open market.

That depends on which side of the fence you're standing. The fo has more than just one player to consider.

The Zeke contract is useful here in understanding this impasse... .
DAL got a 6 year deal with Zeke which was his final rookie year plus his option year plus a NEW 4 year deal.
Dak has no such rookie years or option years left so he wants the 4 year deal.

DAL could've torn up the last year plus of Dak's rookie deal and had a 6 year deal as well but he played it all the way out.

IMO Dak's agent is being smart here.
DAL has no reason to renegotiate until the next deal is on it's last year.
The sooner you get their the sooner you get the 3rd contract which is the seperator for the wealthy NFL players versus those who just made some money.

You see this in NBA with guys like LeBron taking shorter deals many times for max raises then get the massive long term deal that locked him into retirement in LA.

At the end of this 4 year deal Dak will likely have been passed by anywhere from 10-15 QBs.
There's a very good chance 4 pass him in 12 months.

If I'm Dak, I played for welfare money on my first contract, so I'm not budging. Let the Cowboys figure it out.
