Absolutely.

And as I said in another thread, yet another reason to not draft a RB in the first round.

If they are any good at all, they will demand to be paid early, and you dont even get the benefit of the rookie deal.

Smart by them, because a fifth year option plus a tag basically is a RBs entire career.
And if we knew we could have gotten Pollard then I wonder if we paid Elliot. Elliot is a special player. If he wants to be. Heck, who knows what will happen. But we are good at RB for a minute..

Don't see why the cowboys are so keen on Dak after his attitude and the lack of results last year. The only reason Dak signed today is to prevent the cowboys from signing jamal adams and to safeguard against a salary and compensation reduction by NFL owners due to the lack of fans in the stadiums. Dak has only dak in mind despite being given a all the benefit of doubt by the cowboys. This season he will have no excuses for the lack of wins or a superbowl .

This season he doesn't have garrett. That can only be a positive.

If I'm Dak, I played for welfare money on my first contract, so I'm not budging. Let the Cowboys figure it out.
That is reality. For a 4th round pick he over performed. But that won't affect Stephen in the least.

Dak could probably say the same thing about the Cowboys unwillingness to come down from 5 years....

I don't blame Dak for wanting 4 years - he probably would prefer 3.

It isn't about maximizing this contract, it's about maximizing his NEXT contract. The younger he is as a free agent, the bigger that next one will be.

4-5 years is all he will get as a starter for Dallas.

he’s already 64 games in.

128-155 is the ceiling as a starter.

Just compromise on the length to 4 years and drop the guarantee. We finally have a coach that can take advantage of this teams abundance of talent on offense. Lets not screw this up by making a QB problem past the next 2 years. Im also just tired of these Dak speculation threads. Would really like to go into training camp with no contract worries above the teams head.

In the final analysis, the guaranteed money is far more important than length of contract. By a huge margin.

One other thing to note........ unless I am reading the reports wrong, Dak wants roughly the same guaranteed money that Wentz and Goff got. Wentz and Goff's are spread out over 5-6 years. Dak's would be spread out over 4.

Report: Cowboys 'Stunned' by Dak Prescott's Stance on Length of New Contract

The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott are reportedly at an impasse over their preferred contract length in extension talks...

Stunned possibly in the beginning, but no chance they are stunned after 2 years of him saying the same thing.

Not very tough decision to be honest. Hold out until 1/3 of the season is over then agree on a 4 years extension for 35 mill per year. Then its essentially a 5 years deal and you even got the first year for 31 million.

Either that or just sign him now for the 4 years. 4 years is plenty of time to groom another young QB. They should be doing that regardless anyway. I actually think 4 years benefits the Cowboys overall.

Dallas will likely want Dak to sign a longer term deal for salary cap purposes. A 5 year deal would allow the team to spread out Dak's signing bonus over a longer period of time and give them more immediate flexibility.
Well that’s true
What’s also true even a 4 year deal would be easier to work than a tag is

It kind of already is. Wilson, Wentz and Goff were all 4-year deals. Even Tannehill was 4.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's stupid for the Cowboys to expect 5.

4 years is better for the Cowboys anyway. You now have 4 years to groom a young QB to take over in 4 years. It will at least give you options when its time to sign again.

If he is demanding a shorter contract then he is forgoing security in exchange To gamble on himself for a chance of a Much bigger contract sooner. If he is the winner he feels he is then he will earn the entirety of his 4 year contract plus his extension in 3 years.

All true, but no way he does it without a guaranteed money. He's looking at one year sooner. 4 vs 5 years.

I think the jones boys really only want dak for 2-3 years, and if no SB they would then trade him.
with that in mind they need to keep the G money low, so they can have dak cheap for those 3 years, pushing most to the last 2 years.
They would just get most of the G money paid out in the first 3 years.
That is or could be why they want the 5 year deal which makes all that doable.
