I think you're half right here.

You don't have to play "down in the box"; plenty of teams can utilize a split safety or two hashes look. Cover 2, Cover 4, Mix coverage, or disguised looks.

However, one of those two Safeties is definitely going to have run fits/gap responsibility and yes, we should seriously be concerned about Xavier Woods in that role. One (or both) of the Safeties is also going to find themselves covering the bigger, physical elite Tight Ends in the league (Zach Ertz twice, George Kittle on the schedule this year). That's a huge mismatch as well.
Clinton Dix blankets TE’s, that part I ain’t worried about.

Yeah well I havent missed a Cowboys game since 1990, so the SECOND he makes a key play in a key spot, let me know.

As a blind optimist, I still have hope that Donovan Wilson has a chance, but your boy isnt a starting safety on a team that has designs on winning.

In fact dont bet on him not losing his job to one of last years bad corners.

Every Garrett ERA DB on this team is either gone or on serious notice.

Sorry.
You’re just wrong, no other way to say it than that. The marinelli/Richard scheme is now gone and you’ll soon see the errors of your ways.

I certainly hope so, but I doubt it.

I know what a playmaker looks like and he ain't it.

You realize that you admitted to being biased toward him then tell me how wrong I am, yes?

All I know is the guy has made slightly more than zero as far as plays since he has been here.

He was so good they tried to deal a 1st for a guy who plays his position in the middle of a season.

You may want to wean yourself off of your crush because I dont see him here beyond this year, and maybe not even this one.

Yo! Didn’t see one for yesterday so thought I’d go ahead and do it as news is slow anyways. Here we go:

1. We’ve talked a lot about getting Jamal Adams, but what’s the actual cost? JJT sourced Tony Pauline as saying a 1st and La’el Collins was the Jets asking price. This is a non-starter for the team as Collins is on a very reasonable deal and he’s becoming one of the best RT’s in the league. His cap hit the next 2 years; about 4M. No way we trade him or that contract. Collins is one of the leagues best bargains of non-rookie deal QB’s. Also JJ’s ego. He feels he played major a part in a fantastic deal, no way he lets that go. Last reason, the Cowboys will not trade an offensive lineman for a S. Simple as that.

2. Tony Pauline sourced Jadaveon Clowney as having the Cowboys and Saints as his first two options. JJT says the Cowboys are willing to have him at 7-9M, Clowney has rumored to want up to 20M. Unless he cuts his demand in half, no way the team signs him. Injury history, sack production, and consistency listed as the main reasons the Cowboys and the rest of the league have balked at paying him anywhere near what he’s been asking for.

3. This whole segment is about the virus so I’ll tread lightly. Basically the rate of change on information with the virus is so fast that the 65-70 hour weeks go on with a lot of uncertainty. The FO is frustrated, not angry, but just working though the ambiguity.

4. File this away for next week JJT said. He asked team sources, “Give me a couple guys to watch next year”. They gave him 3 guys to look at in camp and going into the season.

-Chris Westry (a personal favorite): Unique and long athlete (6’4 running a 4.3 at CB). Hasn’t got a chance to play too much and is raw though.

-Tony Pollard: ‘Nuff Said

-JJT said this one knowing how some fans would react and said “take it for what’s it’s worth”, but Xavier Woods, who he seemed excited about. Personally, I think all he needs to do is turn those 2-3 missed plays into converted plays and we look at him a lot different. Always been solid PFF wise and is widely seen as an average league starter, but with a coaching change and better front 7 play I think he could take a step.

That’s it for this week everyone! Full link here btw:

Collins cap hit this year is 4.9m in 2021 it jumps to 12m and in 2022 it is 13.5m

Adams and Woods don’t play the same position, so you’re wrong again.

also, he has made plays.

Ok you're right.

He is awesome. He is all over the field making a difference.

Happy?

I would like to see a 3WR, 2RB look with Pollard instead of Jarwin. This maximizes the on the field talent. Pick your poison.

My dream too. Pollard on basic run downs between the 20s. Jarwin on passing downs, red zone, short yardage.

In hurry up, maybe Pollard instead of Zeke.

Would be interesting to go full track team with Pollard at RB, and bring in Devin Smith as the 4th WR.

Best result is to go full AntiGarrett, and use different personnel packages according to how the opponent matches up. Pollard is that tweener guy who makes for the interesting matchups.

"AntiGarrett" sound good on its own.

I do expect to see Pollard used more creatively this year.

We heard plenty about him maybe getting some slot reps, etc last year, not that I recall.

No reverses, and honestly, the game shape 21 was in all season, just basic carries.

Yet another frustrating thing about the last staff. They were either unwilling or weren't capable of designing things for him.

I bet MM is salivating over this personnel, and landing Lamb on top of it.

Usually a coach takes over a bad roster. No such problem here. Good for him. Hope he makes the most of it.

He has not had the impact I believed he would when we drafted him. However, he is not nearly as bad as you make him out to be. There. Compromise.

I believe that a new scheme will help him tremendously and that he will make the pro bowl. You don't. The good news is that this is a provable exercise.

With the current state of the whole season being up in the air do we really go out and sign Clowney?1/2 the season is missed let’s say, do players get a prorated amount of their salary?
I think they get payed per game, so if they played a shortened season they would make less this year.
if no season at all, I am sure something is set up so they would be paid some % of what they normally make.

Again, hope you're right, I just dont see it.

I really do blame the last staff for a lot, but Woods could have broken out if that was his destiny, scheme notwithstanding.

Imagine being the voice(s) in the room who wanted Thornhill at the time? Last year playing out had to be equally frustrating and vindicating for them.
Rod screwed us badly with that T-Hill pick. Glad that dbag is gone.

I have been watching Woods since he was a freshman at La Tech, so I know I am biased, but he is absolutely a playmaker. Go read all the crap other teams have been saying about how predictable we have been and how they knew the base coverages, etc. No S in this league would be an All-Pro with a scheme like that. I'd be willing to wager a handsome sum that Woods makes the pro-bowl if we get a full season in this year.
His hands suck. He has dropped several INT’s other safeties would’ve made.

You do know Jarwin’s hands are 20X better than Zeke’s right??

He has dropped a few. But its a contradiction to say he drops a ton of INTs and then say he isnt a playmaker. Average S are in position to get their hands on it in the first place. He had 14 INT and 6 forced fumbles in three years at La Tech. That doesn't happen by accident. Difference is 'we' (alumnus) had an aggressive scheme predicated on turnovers the the Cowboys have had terrible turnover numbers all the way around over the past five years due to scheme. Let's not act like X is the only one not getting turnovers - it was scheme wide - even the CBs.

A) Great post.

B) How the heck did X get a SportsScience lol? That’s actually such a cool thing to have done for you.

The defensive coordinator should not have that much authority to influence (manipulate?) the head personnel evaluators. They must have liked Hill some too because there is no way Rod overrides them.

In our recruiting meetings, we've had assistant coaches try to push a guy that the rest of the room didn't see as worth getting an offer. I've seen coaches storm out of meetings because they wanted a guy and we all pointed out flaws and weaknesses of the recruit. Ultimately, the head coach had the final say on a guy. Now, if the whole room likes a guy, the head coach is probably going to sign off on him.

Hill's flaws were pretty obvious. They should have let Marinelli storm out of the room, especially since he lost credibility in the Taco Charlton/TJ Watt debacle. As the recruiting coordinator, I kept track of recruits certain coaches liked and whether they ended up working out or not, for us or other teams. That influenced what we did in the future, whose voices we listened to when deciding on a 50/50 kids. Someone in Dallas should have been doing the same with Marinelli.

Before Westry was brought up, i actually thought safety Donovan Wilson's name was surely to come up.
A striker with who showed ball hawk INT skills last preseason before being injured.

Plus McCarthy/Nolan apparently must have thought so much of the guy who coached Wilson up in college, that they hired Maurice Linguist on as an asst. DB coach -assuming with the safeties.

How far down ,, or up the depth chart could Wilson move up in his 2nd year ? :D
