Plus his arm might be more alive in spot duty. If they go 16 with Newton, I dont see them finishing ahead of Buffalo or possibly even the Jets in the East
I don't think you give that kind of money to somebody to be a backup. I think it's more likely that he plans on starting Newton this year and letting the young guys come along without having the weight of all those expectations on their shoulders

Im not 100% but it looks like a vet min + incentives deal that could be worth up to 7.5

the Patriots have other holes in their offense. If they aren't planning on starting Newton it would have been better to spend that money on a receiver for their QB to throw to or a pass protector or a running back

With NE OL cam may have some initial success and with use of legs he may prove useful initially, but his tendencies will catch up , I hope.

Great signing that makes way too much sense for all parties. If Newton can stay healthy and coaching can help improve his passing this is a steal.

For those complaining on the Newton vs Dak contract. If Newton was the same QB he was during his MVP season he would still be in Carolina and on the brink of signing a bigger contract. Not to say he can't return to that level, but Newton's best quality was his scrambling and he's been very banged up. Unless he can adapt his game and improve passing Dak is the better bet.

And it'll probably work because it always does for Bill.

Dude's a football genius, and he's easily the best coach of all time.

Bill Belicek is an historian and he covet's Cam's NFL experience. He will attempt to transition Cam into a knowledgeable bus driver capable of managing a controlled offense, getting the ball in the hands of the playmakers while limiting mistakes.

In this way, Belicek can use his defense to control the tempo of the game, a defense that was ranked #1 in both yardage and points allowed.

Belicek's strategy has precedence.

Jim Plunkett, Doug Williams, John Elway, and Trent Dilfer were all high 1st round draft picks who, late in career, were willing to put their egos on the shelf and play within the system.

Their skills, once considered elite had begun detiorating. However, what they lost was replaced by seasons of valuable experience.

They used this experience to their benefit and that of their teams to win championships.

Like Cam, Plunkett and Elway were drafted #1 overall. Only Elway won championships with his original team. He did this in the last two seasons of a 15 season career.

Plunkett was drafted by the Patriots and considered a bust. After 5 seasons with them and 2 more with the 49ers he found a home with the Raiders where he helped them wim two Super Bowls.

Doug Williams, a 1st round pick with the new Tampa Bay franchise, helped them to their first winning seasons after going 2-26 the previous two. After a contract dispute he joined the USFL and played until it's demise. He then joined the Commanders as a backup and took over after the injury to Jay Schraeder.

Williams's finest moment came in the Super Bowl where he threw 4 TD's.....all in the same quarter.

Trent Dilfer's job was more simple than the rest. Don't make mistakes and rely on one of the most dominant defenses in NFL history.

Cam is going to be the starter. The question is will he be mature enough to accept his role within the team. If Belicek can convince Cam to suppress his ego then he will make the Patriots the stealth contenders they always seemed to be in the past.

Excellent move by Belichick..... easily getting a top 10 vet QB if he's healthy. Only 31, with a huge chip on his shoulder. Typical Belichick move, never afraid of the enigma type players with a few years of talent left.......love it. Just me, but if Cam is healthy, this move means Pats continue dominating that division for at least a couple more years.

Quarterbacks that can actually throw the ball aren't usually referred to as "athletic." John elway was a horse, but he could throw the ball. Steve Young could run, but he could throw the ball. in my mind when people start talking about athletic quarterbacks they're talking about guys who skill set is more with their feet than with their arm
