If Hill was "over-drafted" relative to general expectations it was by 1 round at the very most.

Travis Frederick and Jaylon Smith were considered overdrafts by the fans also, LVE was too to a lesser degree.

This year was a total aberration because seemingly every pick we had was a gift that dropped to us, but probably half our picks recently have been viewed as an overdraft, with a bunch of others like Michael Gallup as guys that have have gone higher or lower depending on the sportswriter - but still ended up being a great pick.

Hill was taken with our first pick of that draft. Gallimore was taken after we had drafted Lamb in the first and Diggs in the second. Naturally, more attention is going to be focused on Hill because we had no great picks before him to ease us into his pick. All our hopes for that draft were essentially centered on him, fair or not.

The fact that we didn't take a safety in a "strong" safety class instead of Hill also brought him extra attention as well as the fact that some felt he was a reach in the second round and there were questions about his attitude/drop in playing time in college.

What our scouts saw were first-round DT traits (size, quickness off the snap, strength) with a second-round grade because of the perceived attitude problems and need for technique work. I don't think any of us should be ready to dismiss Hill, but we like to be quick to judgment around here.

https://cowboyswire.usatoday.com/20...-neville-gallimore-jim-tomsula-rod-marinelli/

If anything i heard per media sources that they thought of him as a 3rd round grade, but with such
the high demand and scarce success numbers for finding pass rushing DTs, they pushed up the need
to pick Hill in the 2nd round ...over safety Juan Thornhill.

- Frankly then and now, i had no problem with the pick of Hill. Marinelli can recommend the type of DT
he prefers, but still to this day, i don't think it was his per say decision to pick Hill in the 2nd round as it was McClay's.

- Also based off what i saw from Hill's game tape, i could see what may have excited the Cowboys brass
about his ability, tools and potential.
Low center of gravity, strong lower leg base, great first step get off at the line, impressive agility and lateral pursuit speed. and he had idea weight room strength. (30 reps at 225 lbs)

- Ironically i had an absolute total different look and take when i had to endure what i saw from Taco Charleton's tape...!! Ugh !

- And still to this day, i still believe and trust in McClay and his group when it comes to pure scout evaluation, so
i bought into the Hill pick.

- And still to this day, i'm not convinced that he is not and won't ever be a player. Like every other player, the passion, self starting drive and self discipline to be the best has to come within himself, but the other elements such as better coaching and scheme fit.
Mentality is what is gonna decide the different between potential star in the making ..or just another
decent- journeyman rotation type.

There is the "Dak has terrible accuracy" narrative. It was exaggerated from the beginning and then those that want to continue the narrative will ignore all evidence that Dak was very accurate in 2019 and had good accuracy in 2018.

Or "Dak spazzes out in the pocket" which only lasted for a short period when he was playing behind one of the worst OL in the NFL.

Many fans that like/love the Diggs pick would have hated Diggs with a passion if they had drafted him in the 1st.

What many who flame Trysten Hill did not realize is that the early problems he had with coaches at
Central Florida he actually tried his best to resolve it by transfering and starting anew at Nebraska
where his previous coach left for,.. but UCF actually stopped that plan and left him all the more discouraged
and disgruntled.

This may explain Trysten Hill's bad blood with new coaches at UCF

By waldoputty on May 2, 2019, 8:51pm CDT

not sure if this totally explains the bad blood between Hill and the new coaches at UCF, but according to: https://www.sportsmediapass.com/2019/01/13/ucf-2018-season-post-mortem/

"Heupel deserves a lot of credit. He was able to limit the amount of disruption while starting to integrate his philosophy into the program. Attrition was surprisingly light. Backup quarterback Noah Vedral left to return to his home state of Nebraka, which didn’t surprise anyone. Other players like Trysten Hill tried to follow, but the school was able to block the transfers. Vedral was willing to drop his scholarship to go to Nebraka. Other players were not. This helped keep the roster largely intact."

it seems Heupel prevented Hill's scholarship to transfer to Nebraska or whichever school Trysten was trying to transfer to...

Tell us very specifically what he did that "sucked".

Absolutely nothing worth talking about which means he sucked. I’ll tell you what’s actually comical. Someone trying to defend the complete nothingness that was Hill’s rookie season. I’m getting a nice chuckle out of it.

Agree.

Hill is nothing like Taco.

Taco was arrogant with an extreme sense of entitlement.

Hill is just slow to adapt to change and slow to implement what coaches want from him. Immature.

The Cowboys honed in on Hill as a high probability of being the pick well before the draft and therefore, checked out his background with his college coaches, etc..
- Hill appears to have been the consensus choice of everyone in the organization.

With Taco they didn't do a good job of vetting his background/personality before the draft.
- Taco was definitely not a consensus pick within the Cowboys organization.
- Both McClay and Stephen Jones appeared to be leaning towards T.J.Watt or a CB but Marinelli somehow convinced them to take Taco.

Brain: Rod Marinelli was a bad defensive coordinator.
Same brain: Hill sucks because Rod Marinelli wouldn't play him.

If you watch Hill when he got a chance to play, he was not all bad. He had recognition issues and got Haydened but he also used his quickness and strength to win many battles.

Exactly the reply I would expect if you have no clue and are just making things up.

Go laugh about the fact that I make more in a week than you make in a year...

Both have the needed God-given talent to be good players.
Gallimore has skilled hands as a pass rusher and excellent athleticism for a guy his size.
As a 3T I don't think he'll have much of a problem against the run.
Hill has that lightning first step and good size, he was just raw as can be
and needs to take to this coaching staff well in order to get playing time.
We could’ve taken Thornhill in the 2nd and STILL HAVE HAD HILL in the 4th. We screwed up royally.

The NFL.com rankings are not perfect but they're not going to vary radically from the general consensus of draft media rankings.

NFL.com Relative to All Prospects
Hill: 62
Gallimore: 129

Brugler Relative to All Prospects
Hill: 91
Gallimore: 82

If Hill was "over-drafted" relative to general expectations it was by 1 round at the very most.
Given Hill’s history he was a 4th rounder and we made him a 2nd. We hosed ourselves.

Based on game footage Hill and Gallimore are more similar than different. Hill was a very good college player. Memphis with Tony Pollard scored 41 points vs UCF in the 2018 AAC championship game but struggled to do anything when Hill was on the field. Of the 41 points, only 10 were with Hill on the field and the TD came after the UCF offense fumbled and gave the ball to Memphis with less than 20 yards to score. Memphis ran to the far side away from him when they scored that TD.

Both college D-Coordinators and Marinelli said that Hill was a "high motor" player and that he practiced hard.

When asked if Hill was not putting in the required effort, Marinelli reiterated "That's not the problem. He practices hard. He has the want-to and the effort, but he is just not getting it".

Hill and Woods were sent home for being late a few days after Hill was called out in the meeting by Isaiah Thomas. Garrett didn't see if Hill was really asleep in the meeting but Garrett was embarrassed and waited for Hill to do something that he could punish him for and made certain to make it public. Seriously, how often did you ever hear of Garrett sending players home. Players were likely late on a regular basis during Garrett's tenure but having Isaiah Thomas call Hill out forced Garrett to do something, especially when he knew he was on thin ice and on the last year of his contract.

It is like I've tried to explain to some people about drinking and driving. Even if you're not over the limit and have only had 1 beer, if you're in an accident and somebody is injured or killed, the prosecutor will convince the jury that the wreck happened because you were drinking. The exact amount of alcohol in your system won't matter because it's the opinion of jurors, not the details of the law that are going to decide your fate.

You are basically cherry picking what you want to hear, I guess. There were numerous issues during the season with Hill. Multiple beat writers talked about how the Cowboys were frustrated with the attitude issues with Hill. There were reports by the end of the year Marinelli kind of just threw up his hands at that point.

You also tried to soften what happened. Hill FELL ASLEEP during a talk from a Hall of Fame NBA player and it was so noticeable Thomas himself called out Hill and woke him up. Then after that embarrassment you would have thought he might wise up a bit, but no, he then showed up late for a meeting.

The kid had/has some attitude issues. That's plainly obvious at this point and it's not just a few examples here, he also had questions about his attitude in college. So to try to write this off as just a one or two time thing is simply not accurate. Hill had better wise up and fix his attitude or he's going to find himself bounced out of here soon enough. He certainly has the skill set but he has to get his head into this.

I remember at the time thinking "one round too early" based on what little I knew of Hill.
He has talent if he puts in the needed work to reach his potential.
He's dang raw as far as using his hands rushing the passer and looks lost at times, I thought.
He could also make a "wow" play here and there based of raw traits, too.
I am concerned about his maturity.

:hammer:
Talent is there. Maturity issues are a real concern.
Hopefully he is ready to get to the necessary work to develop into a viable player.
It sure would be nice.

No, you're proving my point.

You are now citing speculation as fact. Beat writers were speculating that the Cowboys were frustrated with Hill. The beat writers appeal to ongoing narratives. They know that people like you will take anything they say as fact as long as it fits the narrative. People like you are the reason the people like Skip Bayless make millions per year for appealing to fan narratives.

No coach or any non-fan or non-media has said that Hill has a bad attitude. Marinelli was asked on camera multiple times about Hill. The worst thing that he said was "He better be on time next time". Marinelli made it very clear that the issue with Hill was not attitude or work ethic. Everything points to it being some type of attention deficit type problem. What else would Marinelli's comment "He has the want-to and the work ethic, but he just isn't getting it" mean?

Gallimore Is battle tested and performed at the highest stages against top teams which OU plays annually . Oklahoma also plays each year at the college playoff Vs Clemson , Georgia , Alabama and LSU conservatively .
Not sure Hill had such an exposure .
