Anyone still want to claim we shouldn't have drafted Juan Thornhill ?

No way Jerry cuts him unless he's beyond awful.

It will be difficult. If we keep 10 linemen, the for-sures are Lawrence, McCoy and Poe. The very-likelies are Crawford, Smith, Woods, Gallimore and Anae. If Gregory is reinstated, he'd join that group. That's nine.

That would mean the final spot would come down to Armstrong, Hill, Jelks, Jackson and maybe Marino. Depending on how it goes, we might can add Carter and the two Hamiltons in there. Some might would want to include Armstrong in the very-likelies, but either way Hill has to beat him and these others I've mentioned to claim that final spot.

There could be a surprise cut from the very-likelies group, though, if a couple in that last group outplay them. Crawford's contract would make it enticing to cut him if some of those players play just as well. I'm not 100 percent sure how the new staff feels about Woods, although he's been a solid player against the run. And just because we just drafted Gallimore and Anae, it doesn't automatically guarantee either a spot.

He's going to be given a small window, like others, to show he belongs. If he isn't up to that challenge I could see the coaches move on quickly.

Well there won't be much if any pre-season to evaluate him, if McCarthy has to make a decision it seems easy to me that he needs to be cut. Really should have done that last year, but you know.

I recall commenting on this months ago, and looking at it exactly the way this writer has.

True, the numbers dont favor him, but unfortunately injuries usually decide these things and probably will play a role here as well.

He definitely cant just show up thinking he has made the team.

On flip side, Poe and McCoy are on the back end of their careers, Woods has some sort of legal thing hanging over him IIRC, and is up for a contract...and down the line.

A position that looks deep could thin out quickly.

Can he be put on the practice squad? That would embarrass the heck out of him.

Nice post. I think he occupies that last man coach's decision roster spot category for all the same reasons you mentioned here.

Is he a future pro bowler (haven't watched him)?

Thornhill was playing well until he went down with a torn left ACL in December.............Not certain he's a certain pro bowler , but he was a starter , which can't be said for Hill......................

He also wasn't expected to walk in with a bad attitude and spend most of the season inactive while they traded for other candidates either.

Needing development is one thing, being uncooperative and unreceptive to developing is quite another.
Based on the reports...they should've expected that. One thing that was consistent throughout his scouting reports was his attitude.

They should have, but apparently Hill was able to fool Marinelli into taking him at his word rather than going by what his coaches said and felt about him. So much so, that by season's end, even the guy who campaigned to draft him was reportedly "done with him". And now that almost all of the former staff is gone, Hill has few, if any supporters. Therefore, he will have to earn everything he gets, he will either sink or swim based on his own merits, as it should be.

And while I'm hopeful that this young player can turn it around, I'm not optimistic and I expect Hill to go the same route that Taco Charlton did and result in another significant wasted draft commodity.

Add up both Charlton and Hill, and we're talking about getting nothing from 1st and 2nd round picks invested in the defensive line, putting the organization way behind in that area. As a result, it's why they had to pay Lawrence whatever he demanded, and why they've had to go to free agency to sign McCoy and Poe to make up for their misses. And why they continue to roll the dice on reclamation projects like Gregory and Aldon Smith at RDE.

Marinelli's poor evaluations have cost this organization big-time.

Dallas front office guys can't shut their mouths so why would any team be willing to trade for a guy they think or know you will cut? The other thing is other teams will not want to pickup the rest of their contract, its far better for them to sign these castoffs at a much cheaper price. Taco proved he can play at a decent level, but he has a lot of behavior issues most teams won't want to deal with. We will know about Hill very soon in camp, if he works hard and has a positive attitude he will easily make this team but if he acts a fool then he to can go.

I mean we have basically addressed our interior DL like he is not on the team.
This is the probably the strongest statement i've seen. We went and signed 2 interior defensive lineman to start, drafted a 3rd round interior lineman in Gillmore and then offered contracts to Woods and Hamilton with the intention of both of them being veteran interior backups

They literally signed 5 interior lineman in the last 5 months. You are correct, there essentially acting like Hill doesn't exist.......

I'm not either. The good part about this year is they address DT so much that they don't have to rely on Hill. I hope he works out. I don't know enough about him to not like him but yeah I don't hold my breath on him. He shouldn't have any excuses though. Charlton had the coaching staff in place. Hill has a new staff so he can essentially start from scratch to win them over. Has Jerry who doesn't want to chalk down another fail picked. Has competition to raise his level.

That is 99% of the problem. He wasn't expected to walk in and produce. We all knew he was a bit of a project. It was a little disappointing season but not completely unexpected especially considering the Marinelli factor.

Thank you for the opening that lets me post "DLaw was considered a bust here after one year" for the 100th time. I think I get frequent flyer miles for it.
