As per Adam Schefter

“There are no official numbers on Patrick Mahomes' 10-year extension just yet, but multiple sources believe it ultimately will be tied to a percentage of the salary cap for each season. The higher the cap goes, the more Mahomes will make.”

I'm surprised (a) that this is allowed by the CBA, and (b) that it hasn't already been exploited by any of a half-dozen before Mahomes.

At 10 years he could make 40 mil a year and it would be somewhat team friendly. Because you could spread that out and be under the usual big cap hit by year 4 or 5.

The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes have reached agreement on a 10-year contract extension worth over $400 million total that ties him to Kansas City through the 2031 season, league sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Definitely a good QB is demonstrated in all aspects, and here it is demonstrated in a Tom Brady type action, now what will fans in love with Dak think? this shows who is a true player and who is really worth it, a player who if he puts on his shirt, and not one like the Dakota who just wants to be rich without showing that he really is worth it, Dak an abusive guy, he does not deserve be a cowboy.

Dak needs to get off his high horse and just sign a deal that pays him well and leave the team enough wiggle room to cover his azzz with a talented supporting cast

Not a very good agent if this is true...unless he got some crazy amount of money.

He grew up with a father who played in the mlb and he was a 1st round pick in the nfl he's got plenty of money. He probably realizes that if he wins another sb or 2 his earning potential will be insane. Why demand a ridiculous contract that is going to keep the team from being able to sign the talent you need around you.

I am not sure the Mahomes deal moves the needle that much. My guess is if Dak was willing to ink a 10 yr deal at 40 per year average, Dallas would do that.

If Dak uses this to push his dollar demands up, Dallas can point to the length of the deal. The issue for Dak and Dallas was never about dollars, it was about years.

Does this affect it? Maybe... but not really sure how much. It could help Dak get more dollars per year but Dallas could say for that to happen, Dak has to lock in at a 7 yr or longer deal. Plus, we haven't seen the guarantees yet on the Mahomes deal, so that's gonna affect it a good bit too.

What is the cap hit if Mohomes has a career ending injury?

Depends on the guarantees. Signing bonuses can only be drawn out over five years, so my guess quite big if it happens in years 1-3 of the deal. After year five, assuming no moving of dollars, it would depend on guarantees. If a guy is cut or retired, guarantees that have been paid accelerate. They could always keep him on IR and take the hits each year that there is a guarantee if they did not want an acceleration.

Does anyone else get emails from the Cowboys Pro Shop? Got one today with the subject “MAJOR Extension Announcement”. Clicked on it, and it was just extending some sale. That’s so shady/underhanded I immediately unsubscribed.

Yes, I do. You are correct.

I expect the back end of Mahomes contract to be fluff with about 2-3 team friendly contract adjustments over 1st 6yrs of 10 year extension.

As far as Dak. I think he'll play on tag
Mahomes deal is easy. Whatever they do give him will constantly be flipped versus that extra year to reduce cap hits and so long as he doesn't suffer nay career type injury they'll be fine but with larger and larger cap hits as they go until he retires.

If it really is 10 yr/400m that's a whopper of a deal but not bad for the Chiefs or other teams.

If it is really a % of the cap deal that GUARANTEES 400m then a lot of teams will be crying in their milk about this salary reset for the position.

Dallas wanted a 5th year to spread out cap hits and I get that.
I want it for them... but I also wanted them to extend him to a fully guaranteed 10 year 200m deal like 18 months ago when that might have actually been possible.
Dak patiently waited making his mid-round rookie contract all the way to the end of the line so now they gotta pay the man.

I don't think he'll play on the tag. I think the sides are insanely close as is and the deal will be done by the 15th.
